We invited Sister Sheng and her family to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival together at our home.
Ruan Yunxi and her group bought a lot of things in the city.
They also sent two tubs of mooncakes to Sister-in-law Sheng's family.
In those days, mooncakes weren't overly packaged; they were simply wrapped in paper with a red paper label indicating the flavor.
Ruan Yunxi gave Sheng's sister-in-law a tube of six mixed nut mooncakes and another tube of six jujube paste mooncakes, knowing that Sheng's sister-in-law liked jujube paste.
The mooncakes are big, round, and sweet.
One mooncake is as big as a small gummy candy face.
Gu Weizhou, with his good appetite, could eat two and be completely full.
Ruan Yunxi only needs to eat one-sixth of a mooncake; she really can't eat any more than that because it's too sweet.
That evening, Gu Weizhou cooked, saying that the nanny had worked hard taking care of the baby, so he would cook a delicious meal for everyone.
Under the guidance of his nanny, Gu Weizhou's cooking skills improved more and more.
A plate of braised pork, a plate of sweet and sour pork, a plate of steamed pomfret, and a plate of shrimp in tomato sauce—this is what Ruan Yunxi loves to eat.
There was also garlic abalone, poached chicken, a whole conch cooked in one pot, stir-fried squid, steamed sea urchin with egg, and garlic scallops. The scallops today were huge, bought from fishermen, and steamed with abalone. There was no need to prepare rice; there were so many dishes that we couldn't possibly finish them all.
Sister-in-law Sheng brought Xiao Yingtao and the others to Ruan Yunxi's house early in the morning to help take care of the children.
To ensure the children could have fun playing in the yard, Gu Weizhou, together with Commander Sheng, built a thatched pavilion with a wooden platform underneath. After smoothing the platform, the children could roll around on it.
After the thatched pavilion was built, Little Softie and his friends loved to play outside.
Especially when there's no sun, it's cool outside with a wide view, which is much more fun than being on a heated kang (a traditional heated brick bed).
Sister-in-law Sheng also wove a few futons and placed them on top, so that everyone could sit on the futons and their buttocks wouldn't be so bumpy.
Ruan Yunxi tried to weave a futon, thinking she wouldn't be able to, but she ended up learning it herself.
It's just a bit ugly.
Ruan Yunxi gave the futon she wove to Gu Weizhou, who liked it very much. Every time he sat in the thatched pavilion, he would sit on his own special futon.
It was still a bit warm at home during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
It's not as cool as outside.
Dinner was eaten in the pavilion, where two low tables were set up and everyone sat on cushions to eat and drink.
Little Soft Candy and the others weren't sleepy at the moment. Ruan Yunxi and her family would hold one of them and eat together.
Little Softie was in Gu Weizhou's arms when she watched her father pick up a big shrimp, peel it, and think he would give it to her. But instead, it flew over her head and landed in Ruan Yunxi's bowl.
Ruan Yunxi smiled at Gu Weizhou and ate the shrimp he peeled.
Seeing that Little Gummy was staring intently at her, Ruan Yunxi smiled and patted her daughter's head: "You're too young to eat yet. When you're a year and a half old, you can eat and drink all you want. Be good, grow up quickly!"
The little gummy waved excitedly, babbling in baby talk that they couldn't understand.
The little one sitting in Ruan Yunxi's lap was also a glutton. Seeing so much delicious food, he would reach out and grab it. If he couldn't grab it, he would grab his mother's sleeve and try to snatch her chopsticks, making it impossible for Ruan Yunxi to eat in peace.
To prevent her little brother from succeeding, she used all her wits and courage. In the end, to appease the child in her arms who was anxious and about to cry because he could see but not eat, she gave him a large seashell to play with.
The little boy grabbed the sea snail and stuffed it into his mouth. Ruan Yunxi didn't try to stop him. The sea snail was cleaned very thoroughly before being steamed, so the children could play with it or put it in their mouths, as long as they didn't swallow it.
Besides, the younger siblings' teeth aren't strong enough to bite into a conch shell yet; at most, they can only get a bit of conch saliva on it.
The eldest child was even more mischievous in the nanny's arms. To appease him, the nanny gave him a teething stick. Gu Weizhou had made the teething stick himself. He cut down a peach tree and slowly shaped it into a form suitable for babies to grasp and bite, so they could hold it in their hands to chew.
