Chapter 131 The Beginning of Cohabitation: The Smoke of War in the Kitchen
early morning.
Su Wantang's eyelashes trembled, and she slowly opened her eyes.
The first thing that catches the eye is a firm, warm chest, the contours of the muscles clearly defined in the morning light, exuding a sense of power.
Above that is the man's strong jawline and his handsome, sleeping face, which is very close to his.
She then realized that the "Chu River and Han Border" that had been practically useless the night before had long since disappeared.
Her legs were even restlessly draped over him, and she was wrapped around him like an octopus.
With a "boom," Su Wantang's cheeks instantly flushed, and she frantically tried to break free from his embrace.
The moment she moved, the arms wrapped around her waist tightened even more.
The man's voice was deep and hoarse, filled with a deep sleepiness.
"Don't move."
Su Wantang's body stiffened.
"You...you're awake?"
"Hmm." Lu Jingyan didn't even open his eyes, and rubbed his chin against the top of her head.
"It's still early, stay and sleep a little longer with me."
His hot breath hit her scalp, and Su Wantang felt half of her body go numb.
This man is definitely doing this on purpose.
She pushed against his firm chest, but couldn't budge him. Instead, she felt her palms burning hot.
"No, Aunt Wang is coming today, I have to get up." Su Wantang made an excuse.
Lu Jingyan reluctantly opened his eyes, stared at her for a few seconds, and then the corners of his mouth turned up.
"Shouldn't we collect some interest before you get out of bed?"
"What benefits..."
Before Su Wantang could finish speaking, the man's face loomed large before her, and a kiss, carrying the scent of morning and a strong sense of possessiveness, landed on her lips.
This kiss was not as tender and affectionate as the one last night; it was somewhat aggressive, lingering and conquering.
Su Wantang's mind went blank, and she could only endure it until she felt like she was about to suffocate, at which point the man reluctantly released her.
She was panting heavily, her face flushed red, her peach blossom eyes glistening with tears as she glared at him, but without any hint of malice.
Looking at her like this, Lu Jingyan's Adam's apple bobbed, he chuckled softly, and in a very good mood, he rolled out of bed.
"I'll make you breakfast."
Su Wantang remained stunned on the bed, watching the man's back as he walked into the bathroom—broad shoulders, narrow waist, and long, straight legs. She clutched her wildly pounding heart, feeling somewhat bewildered.
This man is becoming more and more shameless.
When Su Wantang finished getting ready and came downstairs, Wang Ma had already arrived and was sitting awkwardly in the living room, with Qin Zheng standing to the side.
"Miss." As soon as Wang Ma saw her, she immediately stood up, her eyes reddening again.
"Wang Ma, please settle in here from now on. This is your home." Su Wantang held her hand and comforted her gently.
"Miss, what would you like to eat? I'll make it right away." Wang Ma wiped her eyes and immediately got to work.
As soon as he finished speaking, Lu Jingyan, wearing an apron with small floral patterns that clearly didn't belong to him, poked his head out of the kitchen with a confident look on his face.
"Wang Ma, you rest. I'll come today so Wan Tang can try my cooking."
Su Wantang: "..."
Wang Ma and Qin Zheng were also stunned.
This Commander Lu from Beijing can cook?
Su Wantang crossed her arms and leaned leisurely against the kitchen door, deciding to observe the situation.
Then, she witnessed a "cooking show" that could only be described as a disaster.
In the small kitchen, the brigade commander, who was usually so shrewd and decisive on the battlefield, was completely lost.
He picked up a kitchen knife, aimed it at a cucumber on the cutting board, and swiftly chopped it down.
"Bang!"
With a loud crash, the cutting board was unharmed, but the cucumber broke in two. One piece flew out, bounced twice on the ground, and rolled to the corner of the wall.
Lu Jingyan remained expressionless, picked up the other half, and continued.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The sound of chopping vegetables didn't sound like chopping vegetables; it sounded more like demolition work.
Su Wantang's eyelids twitched.
After finally managing to chop the cucumber into pieces of varying sizes, Commander Lu then took on the challenge of frying eggs.
Heat the oil in a wok.
Before the oil was even hot, he poured in the beaten egg mixture.
"Sizzle—"
Oil splattered everywhere, accompanied by a wisp of smoke. Lu Jingyan reacted swiftly, taking a step back to dodge the oil splatter attack.
Soon, an indescribable burnt smell filled the kitchen.
Wang Ma watched in horror, and tried to help several times, but Lu Jingyan stopped her with a look.
"It's alright, it's just a matter of timing, I can handle it." He remained confident.
Su Wantang finally couldn't stand it anymore.
If he keeps doing this, the kitchen will be ruined today.
She smiled and stepped forward, untying Lu Jingyan's apron from behind, and said softly, "Chef Lu, thank you for your hard work. Leave the rest to me."
Looking at the black and yellow unidentified object in the pot, and then at Su Wantang's smiling eyes, even with his thick skin, Lu Jingyan couldn't help but feel embarrassed.
He coughed lightly and silently moved aside.
The moment Su Wantang tied on her apron, the atmosphere of the entire kitchen changed instantly.
She moved with practiced ease, first opening the windows for ventilation, and then quickly cleaning up the "battlefield" that Lu Jingyan had created.
She secretly took out a few juicy tomatoes and green vegetables from her spatial storage; the leaves were so green they looked like they could drip water.
Wash, chop, cook, stir-fry – all done in one go.
The spatula struck the iron pot with a pleasant sound, and the rich aroma quickly overpowered the previous burnt smell, filling the entire house.
Wang Ma watched from the side, her face full of admiration and satisfaction.
Soon, two steaming bowls of tomato and egg noodles and a plate of vibrant green stir-fried vegetables were served.
Su Wantang handed the chopsticks to Lu Jingyan, raising an eyebrow: "Want to try some?"
Looking at the delicious-looking breakfast in front of him, and then thinking about his masterpiece just now, Lu Jingyan felt a rare bit embarrassed.
He picked up a mouthful of noodles, took a bite, and his eyes lit up instantly.
"Delicious!" he exclaimed sincerely.
Su Wantang smiled smugly.
Just then, the courtyard gate was pushed open with a "bang," and a loud voice rang out.
"Old Lu! Old Lu! I heard you're back! Why didn't you say anything!"
Before Gao Jianjun arrived, his voice preceded his arrival as he barged in with great fanfare.
Then, he froze on the spot.
What did he see?
His brother Lu Jingyan, who was aloof from women and as cold as ice, was having breakfast with a woman.
The woman was still looking at him with a smile, her eyes full of doting affection.
Most importantly, that woman is Bai Shu! The mysterious Hong Kong businesswoman who stirs up trouble in Shanghai!
Gao Jianjun's mind went blank for a moment, his face full of question marks.
What's going on? Has Lao Lu fallen for someone else? Has he forgotten his sister-in-law so quickly?
He rushed over, grabbed Lu Jingyan from the chair, pulled him to the corner, and asked in a low, urgent voice:
"Old Lu! What are you doing! This is... Boss Bai, right? You... how can you face your wife? Have you forgotten about that cemetery in the western suburbs of Shanghai?"
Lu Jingyan let him pull him along, his face expressionless, only glancing at him indifferently.
"She is Su Wantang."
Gao Jianjun: "Huh?"
He didn't hear clearly.
Lu Jingyan repeated it again, his voice not loud, but each word clear.
“I said, she’s not dead, she is Wan Tang, she’s back.”
"..."
Gao Jianjun was completely petrified.
He glanced at Lu Jingyan, then mechanically turned his head to look at Bai Zhu, who was holding a bowl and elegantly drinking soup.
Bai Zhu... is that my sister-in-law?
My sister-in-law... isn't dead?
Was that explosion in Shanghai...that funeral...that tombstone...all fake?
An unbelievable yet uniquely reasonable explanation suddenly exploded in his mind.
Shedding its skin like a cicada!
Gao Jianjun gasped, and the way he looked at Bai Shu instantly changed.
That look was no longer just simple admiration, but had evolved into fanatical worship.
Awesome!
My sister-in-law is so awesome!
He fooled everyone, changed his identity, made seven incursions into Shanghai, and finally returned to Beijing unscathed!
What an incredible feat!
Although he didn't understand, he was greatly shocked!
Gao Jianjun released Lu Jingyan's arm, rubbed his hands together, chuckled, and leaned back, giving Su Wantang what he considered to be his most amiable smile.
"Sister-in-law... Sister-in-law!"
That cry of "sister-in-law" was so sincere and so deeply moving.
Su Wantang put down her bowl, looked up at him, and said with a half-smile, "Good morning, Staff Officer Gao."
"Yes! Good morning!" Gao Jianjun nodded vigorously.
"Sister-in-law, just call me Jianjun! There's no need for all this 'advisor' stuff, it's too formal!"
He scratched his head, then patted his chest with an honest expression and assured them:
"Sister-in-law, don't worry! From now on, if anyone in this compound dares to say a bad word about you or anything untoward, I, Gao Jianjun, will be the first to object!"
"I am your number one bodyguard! Just tell me what errands or odd jobs you need!"
Lu Jingyan watched from the side, a barely perceptible smile playing on his lips.
Su Wantang was amused by his appearance. She realized that Gao Jianjun was a straightforward and honest person. Once he had decided on someone, he would treat them with all his heart.
She nodded, accepting his kindness.
"From now on, I'll have to trouble Guard Gao."
"No trouble at all! I'm here to serve you, sister-in-law!" Gao Jianjun said with such force that he was practically giving a military salute.
Breakfast ended in this peculiar yet harmonious atmosphere.
Gao Jianjun left contentedly, his belly protruding. Before leaving, he turned back several times, indicating that he would often come to "mooch meals" and report on the "enemy situation" in the compound.
Su Wantang looked at his boisterous back, then at the man beside her who was quietly clearing away the dishes.
Suddenly, she realized that life in Beijing might be much more interesting than she had imagined.
