Chapter 370 A Silent Declaration of War
Su Wantang and Shen Qing chatted about everyday things, and the atmosphere seemed harmonious.
But there was an inexplicable tension in the air.
At this moment, Lu Jingyan came out of the study.
He paused for a moment when he saw Shen Qing, then quickly regained his composure: "Comrade Shen is here."
"Greetings, Commander Lu." Shen Qing stood up and saluted.
Lu Jingyan nodded and sat down next to Su Wantang.
He didn't say anything, but simply picked up the walnuts on the table and slowly peeled them open.
The peeled walnuts were fed to Su Wantang one by one.
As Shen Qing watched this scene, her fingers unconsciously tightened.
She picked up her teacup and took a sip: "I heard that Commander Lu was injured. Is he feeling better now?"
"Thank you for your concern." Lu Jingyan said briefly, then peeled another walnut. "Wantang, open your mouth."
Su Wantang obediently opened her mouth and caught the walnut kernel.
Shen Qing's smile was somewhat stiff: "Comrade Su is truly blessed."
"It's alright." Su Wantang looked at Lu Jingyan with a smile. "He just can't sit still and is always thinking about taking care of me."
Lu Jingyan peeled another walnut, but this time he didn't feed it to her; he ate it himself.
Su Wantang glared at him.
Lu Jingyan remained calm, peeled another one, and then fed it to her.
As Shen Qing watched the two interacting as if no one else was around, her grip on the teacup tightened.
She sat for ten minutes, then got up to say goodbye: "It's getting late, I won't bother you any longer."
"Leaving so soon?" Su Wantang urged, "Sit a little longer."
"No, I have other things to do at the military base." Shen Qing smiled. "Let's keep in touch."
"Okay." Su Wantang saw her to the door. "Come visit often when you have time."
After Shen Qing left, Su Wantang turned around and went back to the courtyard.
Lu Jingyan was still peeling walnuts, arranging them one by one on a plate.
"What are you doing?" Su Wantang walked over.
"Peel walnuts." Lu Jingyan said without looking up.
Why peel so much?
"Here, have some." Lu Jingyan finally looked up at her. "You should eat more walnuts during pregnancy; they're good for the baby."
Su Wantang sat down, picked up a walnut kernel, and put it in her mouth.
“Wantang,” Lu Jingyan suddenly spoke.
"Um?"
"Shen Qing and I really have nothing going on," he said earnestly.
Su Wantang smiled: "I know."
"You know?" Lu Jingyan was stunned.
“I’m not blind.” Su Wantang poked his forehead. “The way you were acting just now, it was like you were writing ‘I have a wife’ on your face.”
Lu Jingyan breathed a sigh of relief: "It's good that you're not angry."
"Why would I be angry?" Su Wantang leaned on his shoulder. "However, our lives are probably going to be quite lively from now on."
Lu Jingyan put his arm around her waist: "Let it be lively, I'm not afraid."
"You're not afraid, but I am," Su Wantang sighed. "Women's wars are far more complex than men's wars."
"Then what do you want to do?" Lu Jingyan asked.
"We'll meet force with force, and we'll dam water with earth." Su Wantang narrowed her eyes. "Who told you to be so likable?"
Lu Jingyan sensed the sourness in her words and couldn't help but laugh.
"What are you laughing at?" Su Wantang glared at him.
"You're jealous." Lu Jingyan pinched her cheek.
"I didn't." Su Wantang slapped his hand away.
"Yes." Lu Jingyan pulled her into his arms. "He's absolutely jealous."
Su Wantang struggled for a moment, then gave up.
Oh well, I can't break free anyway.
At night, Su Wantang lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep.
Lu Jingyan put his arm around her: "What's wrong?"
"It's alright." Su Wantang closed her eyes.
"Still thinking about what happened during the day?" Lu Jingyan asked.
Su Wantang remained silent, which was taken as tacit agreement.
Lu Jingyan kissed her forehead: "Wantang, you are the only one in my heart."
“I know.” Su Wantang turned around and looked at him, “but others don’t know.”
“Then let them know,” Lu Jingyan said. “Tomorrow I’ll apply to change dorm rooms and move to a place further away.”
"No need," Su Wantang shook her head. "The more we hide, the more guilty we seem."
"So what do you want to do?"
"We'll remain unchanged amidst all changes," Su Wantang laughed. "Let's see what other tricks she can pull."
Lu Jingyan stared at her for a few seconds, then suddenly rolled over and pinned her down.
"What are you doing?" Su Wantang pushed him.
"Let's do something else to stop you from overthinking." Lu Jingyan lowered his head and kissed her lips.
Su Wantang wanted to speak, but he silenced her with a kiss.
After a long while, the two finally separated.
Su Wantang gasped for breath, "You...you be gentle..."
"Okay." Lu Jingyan's voice was terribly hoarse.
The next morning, Su Wantang woke up to find that Lu Jingyan was no longer in bed.
She got up, dressed, and went into the courtyard, where she saw Lu Jingyan practicing boxing.
Aunt Wang came over with breakfast: "Miss, Commander Lu got up especially early today."
"Really?" Su Wantang sat down and took a sip of porridge.
“That’s right.” Wang Ma lowered her voice. “She got up before dawn and stood in the yard for half a day.”
Su Wantang looked up at Lu Jingyan.
He had his back to her, and his punches were fierce.
After breakfast, Su Wantang took a walk in the courtyard.
Just then, a noise came from next door.
Shen Qing was also in the courtyard, tidying up her things.
She saw Su Wantang and greeted her, "Comrade Su, good morning."
"Good morning," Su Wantang replied with a smile.
The two chatted for a few minutes through the wall.
Shen Qing mentioned that she had just been transferred to Beijing and was unfamiliar with the city, so she hoped that she would be taken care of in the future.
Su Wantang politely said a few polite words.
As they chatted, Shen Qing suddenly changed the subject: "By the way, I heard that Commander Lu was seriously injured while on a mission in the Northwest?"
"Yes." Su Wantang nodded, "But it's all better now."
"That's good." Shen Qing smiled. "I used to work in the Northwest, and I'm an old comrade-in-arms with Brigade Commander Lu."
Su Wantang understood the implication in her words, but her smile remained unchanged: "Really? Then you two must have a good relationship."
"It's alright," Shen Qing said. "Back then, we worked together on a mission as partners, and we coordinated very well."
Su Wantang did not respond.
Shen Qing said a few more words, and seeing that Su Wantang's reaction was indifferent, she took her leave.
When Su Wantang returned to the courtyard, Lu Jingyan had already finished his boxing practice.
He walked over, picked up a towel to wipe his sweat, and asked, "What did Shen Qing say to you just now?"
"It's nothing," Su Wantang said, handing him a glass of water. "We were just chatting."
Lu Jingyan took a sip of water and stared at her for a few seconds: "Wantang, don't overthink it."
"I didn't think much of it," Su Wantang laughed. "You seem quite nervous."
"I..." Lu Jingyan choked.
Su Wantang patted his shoulder: "Alright, I know you only have me in your heart."
Lu Jingyan breathed a sigh of relief.
“However…” Su Wantang changed the subject, “you need to let others know as well.”
"How do we do it?" Lu Jingyan asked.
Su Wantang thought for a moment: "Why don't you take tomorrow off?"
"Um."
"Then let's go shopping together," Su Wantang said. "Let's go to the street near the military compound."
Lu Jingyan was stunned for a moment, then he understood.
That street was the favorite place for military families to go, and news spread the fastest there.
Whenever the two of them appear hand in hand, the entire military region will know within half a day how much Brigade Commander Lu dotes on his wife.
"Okay." Lu Jingyan held her hand. "I'll do whatever you say."
