Chapter 49 The Witness Has Gone Mad
VIP ward at the General Hospital of the Military Region.
Gao Jianjun peeled the apple with great enthusiasm, his mouth chattering like a machine gun.
"Commander, I just asked the military law department. That old bastard Lu Wenbo can't take it anymore! After less than 24 hours of interrogation, his mental defenses are about to collapse! I reckon that in another day at most, he'll spill all the dirt on his ancestors!"
Lu Jingyan leaned against the hospital bed, looking at the gray sky outside the window. His face was still pale, but the gloom between his brows had dissipated considerably.
In the past few days, the net he had laid has been tightening layer by layer. From Lu Wenbo's peripheral henchmen to his old subordinates hidden in the logistics department, every single one of them has been kept under close surveillance.
The intervention of the military law department, in particular, was extremely powerful.
The scales of victory seem to have tipped completely in their favor.
"Don't be careless." Lu Jingyan's voice was not loud, with a hint of hoarseness unique to injuries. "Even a cornered dog will jump over the wall."
"Hey, Commander, you can rest assured!" Gao Jianjun handed over the peeled apple. "We have all the evidence and witnesses. Even if Lu Wenbo had three heads and six arms, he couldn't turn things around this time! That assassin 'Gecko' is tight-lipped, but in front of the experts in our military law department, he's like a three-year-old child, answering every question. The evidence is irrefutable; let's see how he denies it!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the door to the ward was gently pushed open.
Su Wantang walked in carrying a thermal lunchbox, and the sweet aroma of rice porridge instantly dispelled the faint smell of disinfectant in the room.
She placed the lunchbox on the bedside table, and upon hearing Gao Jianjun's words, she didn't even lift her eyelids, but simply continued to scoop out the porridge.
"Gao Jianjun, do you think you're smarter than Lu Wenbo?"
"Huh?" Gao Jianjun was taken aback by the question. He scratched his head and answered honestly, "Sister-in-law, I'm just a rough man. How could I possibly compete with an old fox like Master Lu?"
"If you can think of something, how could he not?" Su Wantang naturally brought a spoonful of warm porridge to Lu Jingyan's lips.
Lu Jingyan opened his mouth and drank it, his gaze remaining fixed on her face.
Su Wantang tested the temperature of the bowl with the back of her hand and continued, "A venomous snake driven to the brink of death will use its last strength to bite out the most venomous bite before it dies."
She raised her eyes, her clear gaze fixed on Gao Jianjun, her voice utterly calm.
"Keep a close eye on that killer; he's the only living witness now. All of Lu Wenbo's crimes are pinned on him alone."
"This person cannot afford to make any mistakes."
The excitement on Gao Jianjun's face was quickly dampened by Su Wantang's cold water.
He pondered it for a moment and realized his sister-in-law was right; a chill ran down his spine.
“Sister-in-law is right! I…I’ll go make a call right now and tell them to keep a close watch on everyone! Not even a fly can get in!”
Just as he was about to turn around, the military telephone on the table suddenly emitted a piercing scream!
"Ring—Ring—"
The sound was urgent and rapid, like a chicken being strangled, squawking desperately.
The hearts of the three people in the room skipped a beat.
Gao Jianjun, who was closest, grabbed the microphone.
"Hello! This is Gao Jianjun!"
After hearing what was said on the other end of the phone, Gao Jianjun's face visibly turned from rosy to deathly pale.
His hand holding the microphone was bulging with veins, and he opened his mouth several times, but couldn't utter a single word.
"What's wrong?" Lu Jingyan asked in a deep voice.
"Regiment...Regiment Commander..." Gao Jianjun's voice trembled.
"Something...something's happened!"
"Gecko... Gecko... he's gone mad!"
Lu Jingyan's pupils suddenly contracted.
Su Wantang's hand, holding the bowl of porridge, paused almost imperceptibly.
Gao Jianjun practically roared, "Just last night! At the hospital guarding him, a few troublemakers suddenly stormed in, claiming the doctor had given their family members the wrong medication! They started hitting and smashing things, creating complete chaos! The guards finally managed to subdue them, but when they got back to the ward..."
"That kid Gecko is hiding in the corner, not recognizing anyone! He spouts nonsense, one minute claiming to be the Jade Emperor, the next saying he's Qin Shi Huang, and he kowtows to everyone he sees, shouting 'Long live the Emperor!'"
"Clatter".
Su Wantang placed the bowl of porridge heavily on the bedside table.
She found out.
The serpent's fangs are now exposed.
Lu Jingyan threw off the covers and was about to get out of bed when the movement was too big, which aggravated the wound on his left arm, causing him to gasp in pain.
"Damn it!" he cursed under his breath, veins bulging on his forehead.
Su Wantang pressed his shoulder and shook her head.
"It's too late." Her voice was very soft.
Sure enough, another urgent voice came from the microphone in Gao Jianjun's hand.
After listening for a few minutes, he felt as if his bones had been removed, slumped into a chair, his eyes vacant, muttering to himself.
"It's over...it's all over..."
"The military region invited the most renowned psychiatrist in Beijing for an overnight consultation... The assessment report just came out..."
He looked up at Lu Jingyan and Su Wantang, his face filled with a despair that was worse than crying.
"Experts unanimously concluded that the gecko suffers from severe...intermittent delusions."
"His testimony...has no legal validity."
Intermittent delusional disorder.
What a perfect example of intermittent delusional disorder!
This means that what he says when he is lucid may only be part of his delusions.
This means that the confession that nailed Lu Wenbo to the spot is now just a piece of waste paper!
It's become a huge joke!
"Bang!"
A loud bang!
Lu Jingyan's right fist slammed hard against the wall behind him!
He smashed a shallow dent into the hard wall, and white plaster fell down in a flurry.
Blood dripped from between his fingers and onto the floor.
Scarlet, glaring.
His eyes were bloodshot, his chest heaved violently, and he exuded a terrifying aura of ferocity.
Cut off the fuel supply at the root!
What a brilliant move to strike at the heart of the problem!
In just one night, the other party wiped out all his efforts and all his evidence!
The feeling of powerlessness and humiliation of being manipulated is worse than death!
Su Wantang did not try to persuade him, nor did she say any words of comfort.
She simply walked over, picked up the gauze, and silently pulled his bloodied right hand, carefully bandaging it round and round.
The cool fingertips touched his burning skin, and miraculously, the raging anger was calmed down a little.
"To be able to mobilize resources and create a riot overnight, and to get Beijing's top psychiatric experts to issue an 'authoritative' assessment report..."
Su Wantang's voice was frighteningly calm.
“Lu Jingyan, our opponent this time is much stronger than we imagined.”
“This is no longer Lu Wenbo’s doing alone. There are other people behind him.”
"A person with immense power, ruthless and decisive in his actions, and... willing to do anything to preserve his vast influence."
Gao Jianjun had recovered from his initial shock. As he listened to Su Wantang's analysis, he felt a chill run from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.
He said in a hoarse voice, "Then... what do we do now? With no witnesses, the military law department's investigation... the investigation has stopped. I heard that old bastard Lu Wenbo is now feigning madness in the interrogation room, claiming he knows nothing..."
The case has reached a stalemate.
All the clues led to this "crazy" witness.
