Chapter 159 Disguise and Investigation
Lu Jingyan sighed, pulled her tightly into his arms, and rested his chin on the top of her head: "I'll take some men with me to provide backup on the outside. If anything goes wrong, retreat immediately, understand?"
"Okay." Su Wantang nestled in his arms, a triumphant smile playing on her lips.
The two agreed that they should act immediately and take action that very night.
Su Wantang pushed Lu Jingyan out of the bathroom, locked the door behind her, and with a thought, she disappeared from the spot and entered the Begonia Space.
She took several herbs unique to the space, crushed them into a paste, and mixed them with some powder from bottles and jars to make a waxy yellow ointment.
She applied the ointment evenly to her face and hands, and her originally fair and snow-white skin immediately became sallow and rough, even dotted with a few realistic freckles.
Next, she rinsed her mouth with a special medicine, making her voice a little hoarse. Then she rummaged through a corner and pulled out a set of faded, patched homespun clothes to change into.
Finally, she looked at her reflection in the water, adjusting her gaze and posture. Her original cool and confident aura gradually faded, replaced by a timidity and cowardice stemming from years of malnutrition.
When she opened the bathroom door again, Lu Jingyan, who was waiting at the door, froze completely.
Standing in front of him was a girl he didn't know at all.
He was short, thin as a bean sprout, with a sallow complexion and dry hair. He wore an ill-fitting cotton dress, nervously twisting the hem of his clothes, his head down, not even daring to glance at him.
If it weren't for the somewhat familiar figure, Lu Jingyan would have almost thought a thief had broken into his house.
His Adam's apple bobbed, and he tentatively called out, "...Wantang?"
The "country girl" shuddered suddenly, raised her head, glanced at him timidly, and then quickly lowered her head again, her voice barely audible: "...Mmm."
Lu Jingyan was completely dumbfounded.
This...this is a completely different person! He stepped forward and examined her carefully, even reaching out to pinch her face. The texture was rough, not at all like an act.
At this moment, Su Wantang's heart and Bai Shu's plan were perfectly aligned. Looking at Lu Jingyan's shocked expression, she felt reassured.
If you can fool your spouse, you can fool anyone.
Night fell quickly.
A black Volga silently glided into a secluded alley in the south of the city. Qin Zheng stopped the car, glanced back at the "country girl" in the back seat, and lowered his voice: "Miss, this is it."
"I understand," Bai Shu replied in a hoarse and timid voice.
"We'll wait for you outside." Qin Zheng's eyes were full of worry and determination.
Bai Shu nodded, opened the car door, and walked into the deeper alley with his shoulders hunched.
Inside the car, Qin Zheng watched the thin figure disappear into the darkness through the rearview mirror, his hands gripping the steering wheel, veins bulging.
On the outermost streets, Lu Jingyan and Gao Jianjun, along with a team of elite soldiers, disguised in civilian clothes, had already blended into the night. Some were playing chess, some were smoking, seemingly relaxed, but every pair of eyes was fixed on the exit of that alley.
As planned, Bai Zhu clutched her stomach at the alley entrance, pretending to be in excruciating abdominal pain, and curled up in a corner.
Soon, two slovenly thugs strolled over; they were the men under the leper's command.
"Hey girl, what's wrong?" one of them, nicknamed Monkey, squatted down and asked.
"I...I have a stomachache..." Bai Shu's voice was choked with sobs, her performance was incredibly lifelike.
"Oh dear, that won't do. Come on, I'll take you to see a doctor! There's a clinic not far ahead, and the treatment is free!"
Without saying a word, the monkey picked up Bai Shu and headed into the depths of the alley.
The sign for "Renxin Clinic" looked particularly eerie under a dim light bulb.
Upon entering, a strong smell of disinfectant mixed with herbs hits you, along with a faint, almost imperceptible odor of blood.
The clinic was dimly lit, and a doctor wearing a mask, whose only visible feature was a pair of lifeless eyes, greeted them.
"What's wrong?" The doctor's voice, like his personality, was cold and devoid of any warmth.
"Doctor, I...I have a terrible stomachache..." Bai Zhu said, trembling.
The doctor had her lie on the cold examination bed and casually pressed her stomach.
Bai Shu immediately noticed that although the doctor's hands were examining her, his attention was entirely focused on secretly observing her limbs, neck, and reactions.
That look in his eyes didn't seem like he was looking at a patient at all; it was more like a butcher assessing the quality of a piece of meat.
Bai Shu sneered inwardly, but outwardly cooperated by crying out "Ouch, ouch!"
"It's nothing serious, just some bad food," the doctor said curtly.
"Go to the toilet and empty your stomach. Come back and I'll prescribe some medicine for you."
"Thank you... thank you, doctor..."
Bai Shu clutched her stomach and limped toward the toilet at the end of the corridor.
Just as she brushed past a locked door, she subtly shifted her feet, channeled her inner energy, and quietly executed the Bagua Step.
With a swift movement, he slipped inside like a ghost, closing the door behind him. The whole process was lightning fast; the nurses patrolling the corridor only saw a blur before their eyes and noticed nothing.
The room was completely dark, but to Su Wantang, who possessed profound inner strength, it was no different from daytime.
There were no medical facilities here. In the very center stood a table, on which sat a military-grade telegraph machine! Beside it, a huge map of Beijing was spread out.
On the map, several places were heavily circled in red – the military compound, several core ministry buildings, and even the courtyard where Old Chen retired!
Each red circle represents a deadly target!
Su Wantang's heart sank.
Without hesitation, she took out a miniature camera, a product of this era, from her spatial storage, and silently pressed the shutter while pointing it at the telegraph machine and map.
Just then, a suppressed sob came from the next ward, which had its door half-open.
Bai Shu moved swiftly and silently approached, peering through the crack in the door.
With just one glance, her blood almost froze.
On the hospital bed, a young man in his early twenties was tightly bound with a belt, his eyes unfocused and his mind unclear. His bare arms were covered with countless needle marks, some of which had even begun to ulcerate.
A woman in a nurse's uniform was recording some data in a notebook. She glanced at the person on the bed, a look of disgust on her face, and muttered a curse in fluent German under her breath: "Abfall!"
Bai Shu's pupils suddenly contracted.
German! "Eagle's Nest"!
She immediately raised her camera, pointed it at the scene in the ward, and pressed the shutter again.
This place is not only "Mr."'s" black base in China, but also the core transit station for the "Eagle's Nest" organization to conduct human experiments and intelligence communication!
She must leave immediately!
Just as Bai Shu was about to return the way she came and slip out of that room, a series of unhurried yet imposing footsteps suddenly came from the corridor.
A tall figure wearing a trench coat and a top hat was walking toward the locked room where she was.
The footsteps grew closer and clearer.
Bai Shu's heart leaped into her throat. She held her breath, pressed herself against the door like the most experienced hunter, awaiting a deadly crisis.
Through the crack in the door, she saw the man's profile.
He had sharp features, a sinister gaze, and a habitual, faint, cold smile at the corner of his mouth.
She would recognize that face even if it turned to ashes!
It was none other than Qian Weiguo, the core pawn of "Mr.", the one who stabbed her in the back countless times and repeatedly put her and Lu Jingyan in danger!
What is he doing here?!
Bai Shu's mind raced. Qian Weiguo's personal presence here indicated that the importance of this stronghold far exceeded her expectations!
And he was walking towards the room where he was hiding!
