Chapter 403 Real and Fake Doctors: A Battle of Acting Skills
Lu Jingyue was awake for three days.
She didn't talk much for the past three days. Every time Su Wantang came to see her, she would shrink into the quilt, her eyes wandering, staring blankly at the crabapple tree outside the window.
Meng Wan felt extremely sorry for her and stayed by her bedside every day, trying her best to cook delicious meals for her.
But Lu Jingyue would always put down her chopsticks after a couple of bites, saying she wasn't hungry.
On the morning of the fourth day, Lu Zhenguo summoned the director of the psychiatry department of the military hospital, a middle-aged man wearing gold-rimmed glasses.
The man's surname was Lin, and his name was Lin Chongwen. He was carrying a black leather bag and saluted Lu Zhenguo as soon as he entered the room.
"Commander, I'm here to provide psychological counseling to Comrade Xiao Lu."
Lin Chongwen spoke gently, his voice neither hurried nor slow, which had a relaxing quality.
Lu Zhenguo nodded and led him to the door of Lu Jingyue's room.
"Thank you for your help, Dr. Lin."
"Of course." Lin Chongwen pushed up his glasses and knocked on the door.
Lu Jingyue's voice came from the room, very softly.
"Come in."
Lin Chongwen pushed open the door and went inside.
Su Wantang stood at the end of the corridor, looking at the closed door, her brows furrowed tightly.
Qin Zheng walked over, leaning on his crutches, his leg still wrapped in bandages.
"Miss, Dr. Lin is an authority at the main hospital, so please rest assured."
Su Wantang didn't say anything, turned around and walked back to the master bedroom.
She took a palm-sized black box from the drawer, opened the lid, and inside was a miniature tape recorder.
She got this from Du Kangnian when she went to Shanghai last time. It's an American product that can record audio through walls.
She went to the study next to Lu Jingyue's room, stuffed the tape recorder into the vent, and pressed the record button.
A few minutes later, Lin Chongwen's voice came from the tape recorder.
"Xiaoyue, do you still remember me?"
Lu Jingyue remained silent for a few seconds.
"Remember."
"That's clever." Lin Chongwen smiled. "What was your favorite food when you were a child?"
Candied hawthorn berries.
"Yes, do you remember when I bought you a skewer? You ate it with your mouth full of candy and you were so happy."
Lu Jingyue did not speak.
Lin Chongwen continued, "Xiaoyue, how are you feeling now?"
"not good."
What's wrong with it?
“I always have nightmares.” Lu Jingyue’s voice trembled. “There is blood in my dreams, and there are many people. They are all staring at me with red eyes.”
Lin Chongwen remained silent for a few seconds.
"Xiaoyue, don't be afraid, those are all fake."
"But I think it's true."
“It’s not true.” Lin Chongwen’s voice was even gentler. “You’re just sick. Once you’re better, those nightmares will disappear.”
Lu Jingyue didn't say anything more.
In the study, Su Wantang stared at the tape recorder, her eyes narrowed.
Lin Chongwen's words made no problem, but she still felt that something was off.
She turned off the tape recorder, left the study, and went straight to Lu Zhenguo's study.
Lu Zhenguo was reading documents when he looked up, saw her, and put down his pen.
"Wantang, what's wrong?"
"Dad, can I see Dr. Lin's file?"
Lu Zhenguo was stunned for a moment.
You suspect him.
"I just wanted to confirm."
Lu Zhenguo didn't ask any questions. He took a file out of the drawer and handed it to her.
Su Wantang took the file and flipped through it.
Lin Chongwen, male, 45 years old, graduated from Beijing Medical University, is the director of the Department of Psychiatry at the General Hospital of the Military Region. He has been practicing medicine for 20 years and has cured many difficult and complicated diseases.
The file also has a photo attached, and he looks exactly like the current Lin Chongwen.
Su Wantang closed the file and returned it to Lu Zhenguo.
"Thank you, Dad."
"Wantang, have you discovered something?"
Su Wantang shook her head.
"Not yet, but I'll keep an eye on him."
She turned and left the study, returned to the master bedroom, and made a phone call to Qin Zheng.
"Go and investigate Lin Chongwen, investigate thoroughly."
Qin Zheng responded and hung up the phone.
Su Wantang sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers tapping lightly on her knees.
Lin Chongwen's file was correct, his photo matched, and he spoke gently, but she just felt something was off.
What exactly is wrong?
She closed her eyes and went over the conversation in her mind.
Lin Chongwen said he had bought candied hawthorns for Lu Jingyue, and Lu Jingyue still remembered it.
Meng Wan had previously mentioned that Lu Jingyue was most afraid of sour things when she was a child and never ate candied hawthorn.
Su Wantang opened her eyes, and she knew the answer in her heart.
There's something wrong with this Lin Chongwen.
She stood up, walked to the wardrobe, took out a scalpel from the back, and hid it in her sleeve.
Then he took a plate of fruit and walked towards Lu Jingyue's room.
Passing by Meng Wan's room, I saw her knitting a sweater. I looked up and saw her.
"Wantang, go see Jingyue."
"Yes, take her some fruit."
Meng Wan nodded and continued knitting.
Su Wantang walked to the door of Lu Jingyue's room and knocked.
"Jingyue, may I come in?"
Lin Chongwen's voice came from the room.
"Please come in."
Su Wantang pushed open the door and walked in carrying a fruit platter.
Lin Chongwen was sitting on a chair by the bed, giving Lu Jingyue psychological counseling.
Lu Jingyue leaned against the headboard, her complexion looking a little better than before.
Su Wantang placed the fruit plate on the bedside table, picked up an apple, and took out a small knife from her pocket.
"Jingyue, eat some apples, they're good for your health."
She peeled an apple as she spoke, her movements slow, but her eyes were fixed on Lin Chongwen.
Lin Chongwen ignored her and continued talking to Lu Jingyue.
"Xiaoyue, how are you feeling today?"
"good."
"That's good." Lin Chongwen smiled. "As long as you rest well, you'll recover quickly."
Su Wantang's knife suddenly stopped, the apple peel broke and fell to the ground.
Lin Chongwen glanced at it but didn't say anything.
Su Wantang picked up the apple peel, threw it into the trash can, then picked up another apple and continued peeling.
This time she shaved even slower, her eyes fixed on Lin Chongwen.
Lin Chongwen still didn't react, not even blinking.
Su Wantang felt more confident.
The real Lin Chongwen has obsessive-compulsive disorder; he can't stand seeing things broken, and he'll pick up even an apple peel immediately.
But the person in front of him didn't react at all.
She put down the knife and handed the peeled apple to Lu Jingyue.
"Jingyue, eat."
Lu Jingyue took the apple and took a bite.
Su Wantang turned around and looked at Lin Chongwen.
"Dr. Lin, may I speak with you alone for a few minutes?"
Lin Chongwen paused for a moment, then nodded.
"sure."
The two walked out of the room and stood in the hallway.
Su Wantang had her back to Lin Chongwen and spoke very softly.
"Dr. Lin, you acted well."
Lin Chongwen's eyes flickered.
"Comrade Su, what do you mean by that?"
Su Wantang turned around, the scalpel in her hand pressed against his carotid artery.
"But details can determine life or death."
Lin Chongwen's pupils suddenly dilated.
The next second, a smile appeared on his face, and he reached out and grabbed Su Wantang's wrist, twisting it gently.
Su Wantang winced in pain, and the scalpel fell to the ground.
Lin Chongwen released her, took two steps back, and his entire demeanor changed.
The gentle smile vanished, replaced by indifference and calculation.
He reached up and touched his face, peeling off a thin film from his forehead.
Human skin mask.
Beneath the mask was an unfamiliar face, a man in his early thirties with handsome features, but with frighteningly cold eyes.
He clapped his hands and smiled strangely.
"Miss Bai truly lives up to her reputation."
Su Wantang picked up the scalpel and stared at him.
"Who are you"
The man smiled. "I'm an actor."
He snapped his fingers as soon as he finished speaking.
A whooshing sound came from outside the window.
The glass shattered.
A bullet tore through the air, heading straight for Su Wantang's forehead.
