Chapter 350 Speed of Life and Death
"Go!" Gao Jianjun grabbed the young soldier and ran.
The two stumbled forward, the barking of the wolfhounds behind them growing ever closer. Bullets whizzed through the sand at their feet, kicking up clouds of dust.
As Gao Jianjun was running, he suddenly lost his footing.
He tumbled down a sand dune, and as he landed at the bottom, the wound on his chest reopened. Blood gushed out, staining his military uniform crimson.
"Big brother!" The young soldier tumbled down as well.
Gao Jianjun lay prone on the sand, blood gushing from his mouth. He looked up and saw a dark cave not far ahead.
“There… quick…” he pointed to the cave.
The two climbed into the cave, and had barely slipped inside when the wolves arrived. The beasts paced around the entrance, baring their teeth and growling at the entrance.
"Fuck your mother!" Gao Jianjun grabbed a handful of sand and threw it out.
The wolfhound became even more ferocious after being hit in the nose, as if it wanted to rush in.
"Get the hell back!" Black Wolf's voice rang out from outside.
Gao Jianjun looked out through the cave entrance and saw Black Wolf standing at the front, holding a gun. Behind him were more than a dozen men, each fully armed.
"Hey guys inside, can you even breathe?" Black Wolf lit a cigarette. "Want me to give you a ride?"
Gao Jianjun was panting heavily and didn't say a word.
"Throw your stuff out, and I'll let you go." Black Wolf exhaled a smoke ring. "Don't say I'm not following the rules."
"Screw your rules!" Gao Jianjun cursed, then grabbed the submachine gun next to him and fired a burst at the cave entrance.
The bullets hit the rocks outside, sending sparks flying everywhere.
Black Wolf took two steps back. "You won't listen to reason, so you'll have to suffer the consequences." He waved his hand. "Throw the grenade."
A grenade rolled into the cave.
Gao Jianjun reacted quickly, grabbing the grenade and throwing it outside. The grenade exploded in mid-air, shaking the cave.
"Get inside!" The young soldier pulled Gao Jianjun and ran deeper into the cave.
The cave was very deep, and it got darker the further they went in. The two of them walked along the stone wall for about ten meters when a fork in the road suddenly appeared ahead.
"Left!" Gao Jianjun made a decision.
The two people crawled into the left-hand passage. This passage was narrower, and they could only walk by crouching. The ground was covered with loose stones, making it very uncomfortable to walk on.
Footsteps came from behind; Black Wolf's men had caught up.
Gao Jianjun slipped and fell to the ground. The young soldier went to help him up and found that his forehead was burning hot.
"Brother, you have a fever." The young soldier was extremely anxious.
Gao Jianjun took a few deep breaths, "I'm fine... let's go..."
The two continued to grope their way forward. They hadn't gone far when a faint light suddenly appeared ahead.
"There's an exit!" the young soldier exclaimed in surprise.
The two quickened their pace, and when they emerged from the cave, they found themselves in a vast expanse of Gobi Desert. The sky was beginning to lighten; dawn was approaching.
Gao Jianjun looked up at the sky, then turned to the young soldier behind him, "You...you run fast...the intelligence...is entrusted to you..."
The young soldier was stunned. "Brother, what are you saying?"
Gao Jianjun took the intelligence report off his chest and stuffed it into the young soldier's arms. "Listen to my orders! Run northeast, that's where our base is."
"Brother, I'm not leaving!" The young soldier shook his head.
"That's an order!" Gao Jianjun roared, then coughed violently.
The young soldier's tears fell in a steady stream. "Please come with me."
"I can't walk anymore." Gao Jianjun grinned, his teeth covered in blood. "Send the intelligence back...tell your wife...Old Lu...he'll be back..."
After saying that, he shoved the young soldier and yelled, "Get out! Get out now!"
The young soldier stumbled from the push. He clutched the intelligence report tightly, glanced at Gao Jianjun again, then turned and ran.
Gao Jianjun leaned against the cave entrance, watching the young soldier's figure grow smaller and smaller in the distance. He took out the last grenade from his pocket, unscrewed the cap, and placed his finger on the pull ring.
"Old Lu, this is all the help I can give you, brother," he muttered to himself. "You damn well better get back safely..."
Footsteps echoed from inside the cave; Black Wolf's men were about to emerge in pursuit.
Gao Jianjun closed his eyes and pulled hard with his fingers.
boom--
A huge explosion rang out at the cave entrance. Flames shot into the sky, and the entire cave entrance collapsed.
When Black Wolf led his men out, all they saw were rubble and blood everywhere.
"Damn it!" he kicked a rock hard. "Where's the stuff?!"
"Boss, it looks like someone got away." One of his men pointed into the distance.
Black Wolf raised his binoculars and saw a small black dot running frantically.
"Chase him!" he roared.
The young soldier, with the intelligence tucked into his arms, ran with lightning speed. He dared not look back, only focusing on his own frantic running. All he could hear was the sound of his own panting and heartbeat.
As I was running, my legs gave way and I collapsed onto the sand.
He got up and kept running. His knee was scraped, and blood was flowing down his trouser leg.
The pursuers behind them were getting closer and closer.
A bullet whizzed past my ear.
The young soldier gritted his teeth and pulled the last signal flare from his pocket. He stopped and pulled the trigger towards the sky.
A beam of red light shot into the sky, particularly dazzling in the pre-dawn night sky.
After firing the signal flare, the young soldier turned around, raised his empty rifle, and yelled at the pursuers, "Come on! I'm right here!"
Black Wolf's men surrounded them.
The young soldier clutched the intelligence tightly to his chest, his teeth grinding together.
"Damn, just a little kid." Black Wolf spat. "Tie him up and take him away."
The young soldier was bound hand and foot and thrown onto the sand. He raised his head, staring intently at the black wolf, "You...you can't escape..."
Black Wolf crouched down and patted his face. "You little brat, you've got guts." He reached out to grab the intelligence report from the young soldier's chest.
Just then, the roar of an engine came from afar.
A military jeep sped by.
Black Wolf's expression changed. "Retreat!"
He grabbed the young soldier and ran backward.
The jeep stopped, and several fully armed soldiers jumped out.
"Chase!" the leading officer waved his hand.
Black Wolf abandoned the young warrior and led his men in another direction.
The officer quickly walked to the young soldier's side, cut the rope, and asked, "Comrade, are you alright?"
The young soldier trembled all over, pulled out the intelligence report and handed it to him, saying, "Intelligence...to...to..."
Before he could finish speaking, he fainted.
...
Beijing, headquarters of Tangdi Group.
Qin Zheng pushed the door open and came in, his face looking very grim.
“Young Miss, there’s news from the Northwest.” He paused. “There’s a bounty on the black market for someone who looks like a soldier.”
Su Wantang stopped reading the documents. She looked up, her eyes fixed on Qin Zheng. "How much is the reward?"
“Five large yellow croakers,” Qin Zheng said.
Su Wantang gripped the document tightly. Five large yellow croakers could buy a human life on the black market.
"Send people, at all costs." Her voice was steady, but Qin Zheng could tell she was forcing herself. "Go find that person."
"Yes." Qin Zheng turned to leave.
"Wait a minute." Su Wantang called him back. "Contact Wang Kun and have him use the ocean shipping lines to buy intelligence from Hong Kong."
Qin Zheng nodded and strode out.
Su Wantang sat in a chair, her hand gently resting on her belly. The baby inside was quiet and motionless.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
Jingyan, you must hold on.
