Chapter 302 New Neighbors
Lu Jingyan has been on vacation at home these past few days, and he hasn't had a moment's rest.
He took over the kitchen.
Wearing a military green T-shirt, an apron tied around his waist, sleeves rolled up to his elbows, holding a spatula in his hand, staring at the casserole on the stove.
The pot was bubbling away.
He frowned, picked up a spoon, scooped up a spoonful of soup, and tasted it.
His brows furrowed even more.
wrong.
He put down his spoon and picked up his notebook from the side.
The booklet contained dozens of recipes for pregnant women, all of which he had collected from various places over the past few days.
Some were obtained from the military medical team, some were inquired about from old ladies, and some were copied from Wang Ma through persistent pleading.
He opened the notebook and stared at the words on it for a long time.
Then he looked up and stared at the clay pot.
That's not right.
I followed the instructions exactly, but why does it taste wrong?
He took another bite.
It's still not right.
Su Wantang sat on the living room sofa, holding a glass of warm water in her hand.
Meng Wan sat beside her, looking towards the kitchen, and couldn't help but laugh.
“Jingyan has never been to the kitchen since he was a child.”
She said this and shook her head.
"Now it's all good, she's in there every day, even more enthusiastic than me, her mother."
Su Wantang smiled too.
"Mom, have you tried any of the things he's made these past few days?"
Meng Wan's smile froze.
She coughed.
"I've tried it."
He paused, then said, "The taste... is quite unique."
Su Wantang couldn't help but laugh out loud.
special.
That's a good word.
Lu Jingyan's voice came from the kitchen.
"Wantang, come and have a taste."
Su Wantang stood up and walked to the kitchen door.
Lu Jingyan scooped up a spoonful of soup and handed it to her.
"Give it a try."
Su Wantang took the spoon and took a sip.
The soup was a bit salty, a bit fishy, and had a strange, indescribable taste.
But she nodded nonetheless.
"good."
Lu Jingyan's eyes lit up.
"real"
"Um."
As Su Wantang spoke, she took another sip.
Lu Jingyan looked at her, his eyes filled with satisfaction.
He put down the spatula, walked over, and hugged her.
"That's good."
His voice was very low.
I'm just worried you won't like the food.
Su Wantang leaned against him, feeling incredibly warm inside.
She knew how much effort he had put into it these past few days.
I make all sorts of soups every day, afraid that she won't get enough nutrition.
Although the taste was really not good.
But she was still willing to eat it.
Because that was his intention.
After lunch, Su Wantang took a walk in the courtyard accompanied by Lu Jingyan.
The weather is nice.
Sunlight filters through the leaves, scattering across the ground in patches of dappled light.
Su Wantang walked very slowly.
Lu Jingyan supported her, his steps following her rhythm.
He would look down at her from time to time, his eyes full of concern.
Are you tired?
"Not tired."
"Let's walk one more lap."
"good."
The two walked and walked until they reached a corner.
A young woman carrying a stack of books hurried over.
She kept her head down and walked quickly.
Lu Jingyan didn't notice; he was talking to Su Wantang with his body turned to the side.
The woman bumped into him.
"Ouch--"
Books were scattered all over the floor.
The woman also staggered and almost fell.
Lu Jingyan caught her in time.
Are you alright?
The woman raised her head.
It was a delicate and gentle face.
She was stunned when she saw Lu Jingyan.
Then a hint of amazement flashed in her eyes, but she quickly lowered them and blushed.
"I'm sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going."
She apologized repeatedly and squatted down to pick up the book.
In a flurry of activity.
Su Wantang stood beside her, watching her.
The woman was about twenty-five or twenty-six years old, wearing a navy blue dress, and her hair was neatly combed.
She has a gentle temperament and a soft voice.
Lu Jingyan let go of his hand and squatted down to help pick up the books.
"It's nothing, I didn't notice."
The woman picked up a few books and looked up at him.
"You must be Brigade Commander Lu?"
Lu Jingyan paused.
You know me.
The woman smiled.
"Of course I know him."
As she spoke, she picked up a few more books.
“My wife has told me about you. She said you are a hero of the military region and have made several merits at a young age.”
As she spoke, her eyes remained fixed on Lu Jingyan.
His eyes held undisguised admiration.
Lu Jingyan frowned.
He wasn't used to that kind of look.
Especially when seen through the eyes of a strange woman.
"Who are you"
The woman stood up, holding the book, and smiled brightly.
"My name is Qiao Lingling, and I'm a new neighbor who just moved in."
She pointed to a building next door.
"My husband works in the logistics department. His surname is Zhang and his name is Zhang Jianguo."
Lu Jingyan nodded.
"Hello."
Qiao Lingling then looked at Su Wantang.
"This must be Mrs. Lu."
She walked over and warmly took Su Wantang's hand.
"I had long heard that Brigade Commander Lu and his wife were a loving couple, and seeing them today, I can confirm that their reputation is well-deserved."
Su Wantang smiled.
"Hello."
Her voice was very soft.
Qiao Lingling continued, "Mrs. Lu is so beautiful, no wonder Commander Lu dotes on you so much."
As she spoke, she looked at Lu Jingyan again.
"Brigade Commander Lu, you are truly blessed."
Lu Jingyan did not respond.
He bent down, picked up the last few books, and handed them to Qiao Lingling.
Qiao Lingling took the book and thanked her.
She was carrying the books and was about to leave.
A bookmark slipped out of the book and landed at Su Wantang's feet.
Su Wantang bent down and picked it up.
The bookmark is made of wood and has a line of text engraved on it.
German.
Su Wantang glanced at it and handed it to Qiao Lingling.
Qiao Lingling's eyes lit up when she saw the bookmark.
"Oh dear, I almost forgot about this."
She took the bookmark and smiled even more broadly.
"I bought this when I was studying in Germany, and I've never been willing to throw it away."
Su Wantang raised an eyebrow.
Have you been to Germany?
"Yes."
Qiao Lingling nodded.
“I stayed there for three years, specializing in German literature.”
As she spoke, she glanced at the bookmark again.
"This is a line of poetry by Goethe, it's really beautiful."
Su Wantang nodded.
"really."
Qiao Lingling looked at her, a hint of surprise flashing in her eyes.
Mrs. Lu also understands German.
I know a little bit about it.
Su Wantang spoke casually.
Qiao Lingling smiled.
"Then we can communicate more in the future."
As she spoke, she hugged the book tightly.
"I just moved in a few days ago, and I still have a lot of things to unpack."
"If you have time, Mrs. Lu, you are welcome to come to my house for a chat."
Su Wantang smiled.
"OK."
Qiao Lingling then looked at Lu Jingyan.
"Brigade Commander Lu, then I won't disturb you any longer."
After she finished speaking, she nodded to the two of them, turned around, and left.
They walked very fast.
Su Wantang stood there, watching her back.
Qiao Lingling left in a hurry.
But before she turned the corner, she glanced back.
His gaze fell on Su Wantang's abdomen.
His eyes were quick.
But Su Wantang still managed to catch it.
There was something else in those eyes besides curiosity.
Examine.
Calculation.
Su Wantang's gaze darkened.
Lu Jingyan walked over and took her hand.
"What's wrong"
Su Wantang withdrew her gaze and shook her head.
"fine."
She turned around and looked at him.
"Let's go back."
"good."
The two walked back.
Su Wantang walked very slowly.
Lu Jingyan supported her, asking her from time to time if she was tired.
Su Wantang said she wasn't tired.
But in her heart, an alarm had already been sounded.
That Qiao Lingling is no simple character.
Back home, Su Wantang sat on the sofa.
Lu Jingyan poured her a glass of water.
"Wantang, were you preoccupied just now?"
Su Wantang took the water glass and took a sip.
"No."
Lu Jingyan looked at her, his gaze darkening.
You can't fool me.
Su Wantang put down her water glass and looked at him.
"Jingyan, have you ever met that Qiao Lingling?"
Lu Jingyan shook his head.
"Never seen it before."
She said her husband works in the logistics department.
"right."
Lu Jingyan said, "His surname is Zhang, and his name is Zhang Jianguo."
He paused, then said, "There is indeed such a person in the logistics department, but I don't know him well."
Su Wantang nodded.
So what do you think of her?
Lu Jingyan frowned.
"How about what?"
"that is……"
Su Wantang thought for a moment.
What kind of person do you think she is?
Lu Jingyan thought for a moment.
"They were very enthusiastic."
He paused, then said, "But I don't really like the way she looks at me."
Su Wantang raised an eyebrow.
What kind of look is that?
"At once……"
Lu Jingyan didn't know how to describe it.
"Too eager."
He said, "I'm not used to it."
Su Wantang smiled.
She reached out and touched his face.
"Jingyan, you are too charming."
Lu Jingyan took her hand.
"I'm only attractive to you."
Su Wantang felt a warmth in her heart.
She leaned against him and closed her eyes.
But I kept thinking about what had just happened.
The way Qiao Lingling looked at her belly.
That look in her eyes... something's not right.
It wasn't just simple curiosity.
It's more like... confirming something.
Su Wantang opened her eyes.
She sat up and looked at Lu Jingyan.
"Jingyan, can you help me investigate someone?"
Lu Jingyan was stunned.
"who"
"Qiao Lingling".
Lu Jingyan's gaze darkened.
You suspect her.
Su Wantang nodded.
"I think she's not simple."
Lu Jingyan didn't ask why.
He stood up and went to the study.
I picked up the phone and dialed a number.
"Jianjun, that's me."
"What's wrong with my brother?"
"Help me look up someone."
"who"
"Qiao Lingling, Zhang Jianguo's wife."
Gao Jianjun was stunned.
"Zhang Jianguo, the one in the logistics department"
"right."
Why investigate her?
Lu Jingyan paused.
"Wantang thinks there's something wrong with her."
Gao Jianjun immediately became serious.
"The person your sister-in-law suspects must have a problem."
He said, "I'll check right away."
"Um."
Lu Jingyan hung up the phone and returned to the living room.
Su Wantang sat on the sofa with her hand on her stomach.
Her eyes were closed, and her breathing was steady.
Lu Jingyan walked over and sat down next to her.
"Jianjun went to investigate."
Su Wantang opened her eyes and looked at him.
"Thanks."
Lu Jingyan took her hand.
"Wantang, don't overthink it."
"I didn't think much about it."
Su Wantang said, "I just felt that there was something wrong with her gaze."
Lu Jingyan nodded.
"I trust you."
He paused, then said, "You're pregnant now, you can't overexert yourself."
"Leave these things to me."
Su Wantang leaned against him.
"good."
That evening, Lu Jingyan went into the kitchen again.
He made a fish soup following the recipe.
When the soup was served, Su Wantang took a sip.
It still tastes a bit fishy.
But she still finished it.
Lu Jingyan looked at her, his eyes filled with satisfaction.
"Is it good?"
"It tastes good."
Su Wantang said.
Lu Jingyan smiled.
He reached out and patted her head.
"Then I'll do it tomorrow."
Su Wantang nodded.
After dinner, the two sat in the living room.
Lu Jingyan held her, his hand on her stomach.
"Was the little one good today?"
Su Wantang smiled.
"They're only a few weeks old, how could they feel anything?"
Lu Jingyan lowered his head and planted a kiss on her stomach.
"Dad's here."
His voice was very soft.
Su Wantang's heart softened.
She reached out and touched his hair.
The two of them just sat there.
No one spoke.
