Chapter 385 The Begonia Blossoms, the Hero's Name is Proven.
"If there really is a problem, what do you want to do?" Lu Jingyan's voice was cold.
Lu Wenhai looked at him and said, "Jingyan, I'm doing this for your own good."
"For my own good?" Lu Jingyan sneered. "You're trying to pin a label on my wife with these materials that I don't even know where they came from?"
Lu Wenhai's face flushed red. "But these photos, these receipts..."
“What do these things prove?” Lu Jingyan stood up. “In Shanghai in the 1950s, how many people engaged in overseas trade didn’t deal with Hong Kong?”
Lu Wenhai opened his mouth, as if to say something.
Su Wantang suddenly spoke up, "Second Uncle Lu, may I take a look at those materials?"
Her voice was calm.
Lu Wenhai paused for a moment, then pushed the materials over.
Su Wantang opened the kraft paper bag and looked at each page one by one.
After reading it, she closed the document and put it back on the table.
"Uncle Lu, these materials are indeed genuine."
Lu Wenhai's eyes lit up.
“My mother did indeed do business in Shanghai back then, and she did have dealings with people in Hong Kong.”
Lu Wenhai immediately said, "Look, she admitted it herself..."
“But,” Su Wantang interrupted him, “my mother is neither a gangster nor a smuggler.”
Lu Wenhai sneered, "Then what do you call her?"
Su Wantang looked at him and said, "My mother is a hero."
Lu Wenhai was stunned.
Su Wantang took a small notebook out of her pocket and placed it on the table.
"This was left to me by my mother."
Grandpa Lu picked up the notebook and flipped through a few pages.
His expression changed.
"This is……"
“This is my mother’s work log from back then,” Su Wantang said. “It records all her tasks on Hong Kong Island.”
Lu Zhenguo also went over to take a look.
After reading it, he looked up at Su Wantang with a complicated expression in his eyes.
Lu Wenhai panicked, "Brother, can this thing be real? Maybe she forged it..."
"Shut up." Old Master Lu's voice was stern.
Lu Wenhai was so frightened that he dared not speak.
Su Wantang stood up and walked to the window.
"Uncle Lu, do you want to know who my mother really is?"
Lu Wenhai remained silent.
“Then I’ll tell you,” Su Wantang turned around, “My mother is a secret agent of our side in the Hong Kong business community, codenamed Begonia.”
Lu Wenhai's face turned pale.
"Using her identity as a white paper fan, she feigned compliance with various forces in Hong Kong Island, risked her life to transfer a large amount of trapped assets for the country, and also covered the safe return of many patriotic scientists and democrats to the mainland."
Su Wantang's voice was calm, but every word struck Lu Wenhai's heart.
"The so-called smuggling is actually the supply of urgently needed medicines and equipment to the country. The so-called gang background is just a disguise to protect oneself and complete the mission in a complex environment."
Lu Wenhai swayed slightly.
“My mother is an unsung hero,” Su Wantang said. “Her file is still classified at the highest level.”
Lu Wenhai sat in the chair, speechless.
Grandpa Lu looked at Su Wantang with a light in his eyes.
“Good,” he said, “She is indeed the daughter of a hero.”
Su Wantang walked back to the table and took an envelope out of her bag.
"Uncle Lu, do you want to know who sent these materials?"
Lu Wenhai raised his head.
“I can tell you,” Su Wantang placed the envelope on the table, “but before that, I would like to ask someone to be a witness.”
She picked up the phone on the table and dialed a number.
"Hello, Mr. Chen, it's me."
Lu Wenhai's face turned completely pale.
“Yes, that’s the matter,” Su Wantang said. “I’d like to trouble you to make a trip.”
After hanging up the phone, Su Wantang sat back down in her chair.
"Old Chen said he would arrive in half an hour."
Lu Wenhai's hands trembled.
Half an hour later, the sound of a car could be heard outside the yard.
Aunt Wang rushed in, "Grandpa, Old Chen is here."
Old Master Lu immediately stood up and walked out.
Lu Zhenguo and Meng Wan also went out.
Lu Wenhai sat in the chair, unable to stand up.
Su Wantang and Lu Jingyan exchanged a glance and then walked out.
A Hongqi sedan was parked at the entrance of the courtyard.
The guard opened the car door, and Mr. Chen got out of the car with his help.
Old Master Lu strode over, "Old Chen, why did you come in person?"
Old Chen smiled and said, "I heard that someone is investigating Bai Xiuzhu's case, so I have to say a few words."
Grandpa Lu helped him into the house.
Old Chen sat in the main seat and looked around.
"They're all here."
Lu Zhenguo poured him a cup of tea. "Mr. Chen, please have some tea."
Old Chen picked up his teacup and took a sip.
"I came here today because of the name Bai Xiuzhu."
Lu Wenhai froze.
"Bai Xiuzhu is a secret agent I personally developed within the Hong Kong business community, codenamed Haitang."
Old Chen's voice wasn't loud, but every word was clear.
“In the early 1950s, the situation on Hong Kong Island was complicated, and many patriotic assets and people were trapped there. Bai Xiuzhu used her identity as Bai Zhishan to deal with various forces and transferred a large amount of assets for the country.”
Lu Wenhai broke out in a cold sweat.
“She also helped more than a dozen scientists and democrats return safely to the mainland,” Mr. Chen continued, “two of whom later became heroes of China’s nuclear weapons and satellite programs.”
Grandpa Lu's eyes reddened as he listened.
“Pak Sau-chu spent five years on Hong Kong Island, dancing on the edge of a knife every day. She was suspected and hunted down, but she never backed down.”
Old Chen put down his teacup and looked at Su Wantang.
"Later she returned to Shanghai and continued to work for the country. Until..."
He paused.
"Until she was discovered by the enemy and met a tragic end."
Su Wantang's eyes reddened.
Old Chen stood up and walked over to her.
"My child, your mother is a hero."
He patted her on the shoulder.
"Her file is still at the highest level of confidentiality, but I have to speak out today because someone is slandering her."
Old Chen turned around and looked at Lu Wenhai.
"Comrade Lu, those materials you have were deliberately sent to you by someone. Their purpose is to slander Bai Xiuzhu and attack Su Wantang."
Lu Wenhai's face turned bright red.
"I...I don't know..."
"You don't know?" Old Chen's voice became stern.
"You're using these materials to label someone? Have you considered that if Bai Xiuzhu were really a gangster, how could she possibly own a department store in Shanghai? How could she possibly have connections with so many high-ranking officials?"
Lu Wenhai was speechless.
Old Chen added, “Your Lu family is a military family, and you value reputation above all else. But reputation is not gained by slandering others, but by your own actions.”
Lu Wenhai stood up and walked to Su Wantang.
"I'm sorry," he bowed deeply, "it was my fault."
Su Wantang remained silent.
Lu Wenhai then turned to his father, "Dad, I was wrong."
Grandpa Lu looked at him and said, "It's good that you know you were wrong."
Old Chen sat back down in his chair. "Alright, that's enough about this."
He looked at Su Wantang and said, "Child, I will have your mother's file reorganized. She will receive all the honors she deserves."
Su Wantang's tears fell.
"Thank you, Mr. Chen."
Old Chen waved his hand, "No need to thank me, she deserves it."
He stood up. "I should go."
Grandpa Lu saw him out.
Old Chen got into the car, and the car drove away.
