Chapter 336 The Sword is Drawn to the Battlefield
Joanna sat in a corner of the teahouse, her fingers gently stroking the rim of her teacup.
The man opposite was wearing a faded Zhongshan suit, and his face was lined with deep wrinkles.
"I have heard of the medicinal herb you mentioned."
"I heard that people from the Academy of Agricultural Sciences are conducting experiments in the Northwest."
Joanna didn't even lift her eyelids.
"experiment?"
“Yes, it looks like some kind of special plant,” the man said, leaning over.
“I have a nephew who works as a driver there. He said that people from the Academy of Agricultural Sciences often drive to the Gobi Desert in the middle of the night.”
Joanna's fingers paused for a moment.
"The Gobi Desert?"
“Yes, the area around the Mingsha mine.” The man clicked his tongue.
"No grass grows there, who knows what they're up to."
Joanna picked up her teacup and took a sip.
"What else did your nephew say?"
The man scratched his head.
"They didn't say much, just mentioned that the area was heavily guarded and even the local herders weren't allowed to get close."
Joanna put down her teacup and took out a wad of cash from her bag.
"Thanks for your hard work."
The man's eyes lit up, and he took the money and stuffed it into his pocket.
"Please feel free to ask any further questions."
“Nothing for now.” Joanna stood up. “But if there’s any new information, remember to let me know as soon as possible.”
The man nodded repeatedly.
"Don't worry, I'm very tight-lipped."
Joanna walked out of the teahouse with a smile on her face.
She circled around several streets to make sure no one was following her before disappearing into an alley.
At the end of the alley, there is a dilapidated courtyard house.
She pushed open the door, and there were two people sitting inside.
"How is it?" one of them asked.
Joanna took off her coat.
"It's confirmed, there's movement in the northwest."
Are you sure?
“I’m about 80% sure.” Joanna sat down. “The information from the black market matches the intelligence I had before.”
"Then let's make a move?"
"Don't rush," Joanna waved her hand. "I need to double-check."
What are you afraid of?
“It might be a trap.” Joanna stared at him. “Don’t forget, Bai Zhu is no pushover.”
"So what do you plan to do?"
“Wait a little longer,” Joanna said. “I’ll find a chance to test her.”
...
On the other side, Qin Zheng stood in a corner of the farmers' market, holding a newspaper in his hand.
His eyes were fixed on the entrance of the teahouse.
A short while later, Joanna came out.
Qin Zheng clenched his fists, veins bulging.
He wanted to rush over and grab the woman by the neck.
But he held back.
The young lady said it's not the right time yet.
He took a deep breath and followed.
Joanna walked very carefully, glancing back every now and then.
Qin Zheng kept a safe distance from her.
He followed them all the way to the entrance of the alley before stopping.
He pulled out a small notebook and quickly wrote down the address and time.
Then he turned and left.
...
Military compound, conference room.
Lu Jingyan stood in front of the map, listening to his superior's report.
“An unidentified force has appeared on the northwestern border in the past few days, with a number of about twenty to thirty people.”
"Have you caught any survivors?" Lu Jingyan asked.
"No, they were very quick; they ran away as soon as they spotted our people."
Lu Jingyan frowned.
"Has a Hong Kong background?"
"Yes, judging from the seized supplies, they should be people from Hong Kong Island."
Lu Jingyan remained silent for a few seconds.
"I'll go."
"You're going?" The superior was taken aback. "This mission is very dangerous."
“I know,” Lu Jingyan said, “but I have to go.”
"Why?"
"Because this matter concerns me."
His superior looked at him but didn't ask any more questions.
"Okay, you take a whole company with you."
"yes."
Lu Jingyan walked out of the conference room and went straight back to Courtyard No. 1.
...
Su Wantang was sitting in her study when Qin Zheng stood in front of her and gave a report.
"Miss, Joanna went to three places today."
Which three?
"A teahouse, a black market, and an abandoned courtyard house."
Su Wantang nodded.
"Did you write down the address of the courtyard house?"
"I've written it down." Qin Zheng handed over the notebook. "I've drawn a map."
Su Wantang glanced at it and put the notebook away.
"well done."
Qin Zheng didn't move.
"Young Miss, I..."
"Want to make a move?"
Qin Zheng gritted his teeth and remained silent.
Su Wantang stood up and walked up to him.
I know you're feeling bad.
"But taking action now would only alert the enemy."
Qin Zheng lowered his head.
"I know."
"Then just bear with it a little longer." Su Wantang patted his shoulder. "I promise, she won't get away."
Qin Zheng took a deep breath.
"I'll listen to you."
After he left, Su Wantang sat back down in her chair.
She picked up the notebook and carefully looked at the addresses on it.
This courtyard house is very likely the Eagle's Nest's base in Beijing.
We need to find a way to take it down.
...
Lu Jingyan returned that evening.
He pushed open the door and saw Su Wantang sitting in the study.
"Still not asleep?"
Su Wantang looked up at him.
"Wait for you."
Lu Jingyan walked over and picked her up from the chair.
"I have something to tell you."
Su Wantang wrapped her arms around his neck.
"What's up?"
"I want to go to the Northwest."
Su Wantang was stunned for a moment.
"when?"
"the day after tomorrow."
Su Wantang remained silent.
Lu Jingyan looked at her.
"Worried about me?"
“Of course I’m worried,” Su Wantang said, “but I know you have to go.”
Lu Jingyan hugged her even tighter.
"I feel at ease when you're in Beijing."
"What's there to worry about?" Su Wantang smiled. "Qin Zheng, Gao Jianjun, and the Lu family are all here."
“That’s true,” Lu Jingyan leaned down, his forehead touching hers, “but I’m still worried.”
Su Wantang raised her hand and touched his face.
"Then hurry back."
“I will,” Lu Jingyan said. “Take good care of yourself and the child.”
Su Wantang nodded.
The two hugged for a long time without saying a word.
In the end, Lu Jingyan was the first to let go.
Go to sleep.
"good."
Lu Jingyan carried her back to the bedroom and gently placed her on the bed.
He sat on the edge of the bed, looking at her.
"Wantang, after I leave, if you need anything, just ask Gao Jianjun."
"I know."
"Also, don't be reckless."
"I won't force myself," Su Wantang said. "You too, don't push yourself too hard."
Lu Jingyan smiled.
"Are you trying to teach me how to do things?"
“Yes, I’m teaching you,” Su Wantang said. “If something happens to you, I’ll remarry with the child.”
Lu Jingyan's expression changed.
"You dare."
"Then you just need to be careful not to get into trouble."
Lu Jingyan stared at her for a few seconds, and finally sighed.
"Okay, I'll do as you say."
He leaned down and kissed her lips.
The kiss was light, slow, and tender.
When they parted, Su Wantang's eyes were a little red.
"Lu Jingyan, you must come back safely."
“I will,” Lu Jingyan said. “When I come back, we’ll go to the Northwest to take a look.”
"good."
Lu Jingyan kissed her forehead again before getting up and leaving.
Su Wantang was left alone in the room.
She closed her eyes and gently placed her hand on her stomach.
"Baby, your dad is going to war."
"Let's wait for him to come home, okay?"
The baby in her belly kicked her, as if in response.
Su Wantang smiled.
"You also think he'll come back safely, right?"
