Su Li turned and went back to her room. Zhou Yuting saw the door close and her eyes turned red.
She thought that in this lifetime, apart from her family, she would never be able to trust anyone else.
So she silently turned around and walked towards the brigade leader's house.
Today, the youngest son of the brigade leader came back from his military service, and Aunt Li was cooking.
When Zhou Yuting saw that the gate to the brigade leader's courtyard was open, she walked in absentmindedly and accidentally bumped into a man.
She instinctively covered her head and backed away. The man chuckled and said, "I'm not hitting anyone, why are you covering your head like that?"
Zhou Yuting lowered her head and said softly, "I'm sorry."
"You're here to see my dad, right? I'll go get him for you."
Soon the captain came out and was shocked when he saw Zhou Yuting. The girl was so thin that she was almost unrecognizable.
These past few months must have been incredibly tough for him.
"You're here to get the keys, right? I'll find them for you right away. Wait here in the yard for a bit."
Zhou Yuting nodded.
She was standing in the corner when Zhang Shun came out, holding a steamed bun, and handed it to Zhou Yuting.
"Here, take this. Judging from your appearance, you haven't eaten in a long time!"
"I don't want to."
Zhang Shun assumed she was just being polite, so he tried to put it in her hand, saying, "Take it."
Zhou Yuting took it; she hadn't eaten white flour steamed buns in a long time, and she wolfed them down.
Zhang Shun felt a pang of sadness seeing this woman; could she have come here as a beggar?
When the brigade leader arrived, he saw his youngest son standing there and said irritably, "Go back and help your mother with the fire."
