As Chen Shengnan watched Jiang Jin's sister-in-law's hysterical outburst, she wondered what she and Jiang Jin should do.
She truly couldn't let go of Jiang Jin and didn't want to give up on this relationship because of these external reasons.
But if there are so many problems at home, she won't be able to live like this for even a day when the two of them come back.
She couldn't bear to see what she had worked so hard to earn given away so meaninglessly.
Chen Shengnan returned home dejectedly.
Just then, her father came back from the fields and saw his daughter looking so listless.
He said irritably, "Come with me to the fields to weed at three o'clock this afternoon. Now that the country is opening up, our family has been allocated six and a half acres of land. From now on, apart from the portion that needs to be paid for taxes, we can be self-sufficient."
Chen Shengnan's eyes lit up; "Then Dad, how much land did the Jin family get?"
Seeing his daughter like this, Chen's father guessed what she was thinking: "They did get a lot of land, but it's useless. With a mother like that, what's the use of getting more land? Even if her bloodsucking relatives don't take it all away, her second daughter will take it all away."
"You have no idea how outrageous Sister Jin was last year. She took all the chickens from her husband's family to her parents' home to raise. She kept the eggs for herself to exchange for salt at the supply and marketing cooperative, and she even hoarded the eggs laid by the two chickens from her parents' home. By the time the chickens were fattened up for the New Year, she didn't leave a single one for her parents' home; she took them all back to her mother-in-law's place."
The reason Mr. Chen said so much was to let his daughter know that this family was really not suitable for her to marry into.
Although he raised her like a boy when she was young, she did not disappoint him.
The other two daughters in the family are not as successful as this one.
He was quite proud when he learned that she had been admitted to university, since her grades were terrible when she was studying there.
Unexpectedly, going to the countryside actually improved their grades. So what if there are no boys in the family? His daughter is still much better than those boys.
In their village, only one person got into a vocational school, and their daughter getting into university really made the Chen family proud.
The problem is that the university his daughter wants to apply to is too far away. The couple hopes that she can apply to a school closer to home, preferably something like medicine, so that she can have a secure job in the future.
I never expected this child to be so opinionated, directly hugging some big country or something.
In the end, they had no choice but to accept it.
But now that his outstanding daughter is going to become a daughter-in-law of the Jiang family, how can the entire Jiang family be a good match for her?
Mr. Chen was a hundred times unwilling.
After hearing her father's words, Chen Shengnan understood everything.
This is clearly telling her that the family is not a good fit.
"Dad, why doesn't Brother Jiang protect his wife more?"
Looking at her with emotions she couldn't understand, Chen's father said, "Shengnan! Do you really think Jiang Wei doesn't know anything? Doesn't he know the grievances his wife has suffered? He knows everything, but in order to keep the family harmonious, he still chose to remain silent and indifferent, letting his wife swallow this grievance."
Just like when he was raising Chen Shengnan, didn't he know that she envied her two older sisters? Envied that they had new clothes and new hair clips.
I envy them for doing so little work.
He knew everything, but he was unwilling to be looked down upon for not having a son in his life.
He wanted to prove himself and show those people that his daughter was just as good, even better than those boys.
He and his daughter did all the hard and tiring work at home, chopping firewood in the mountains and fishing in the river, earning ten work points every day.
She was also very competitive and never acted like her older sisters, who were weak and always complained of being tired.
Looking back now, the person the couple owed the most to was their youngest daughter, who suffered so much injustice in order to prove them right.
Now that their two eldest daughters are married, this youngest daughter has also made them proud.
Now when they walk through the village, everyone envies him for having such a smart and capable daughter.
He genuinely hoped that his children could grow up and enjoy a more relaxed and happy life.
This is why the elderly couple were so opposed to it; they would have been willing to accept her marrying someone from an ordinary family while she was in college.
But she happened to set her sights on the Jiang family, which was a pit of fire; whoever jumped in would suffer the consequences.
"But Dad, Brother Jiang Jin isn't that kind of person. I trust him; he definitely wouldn't let me suffer like this."
Chen's father looked into her eyes and said, "Listen to your own voice. If you were really sure, you wouldn't be so guilty as to not dare to look at me."
Finally, Mr. Chen sighed and said, "Alright, we won't force you. If you can't bear to part with him, then date that guy for now, but don't do anything out of line. Also, you can't get married before college."
“But Brother Jin said that his mother wants him to get engaged to me this year and get married next year.”
"They're really dreaming. You've only just started college, and they're already scheming. If it doesn't work out, either dump them or wait until you graduate."
His main concern now is that his daughter seems to have fallen into a dead end. She just can't understand why she would fall for someone from the Jiang family when there are so many men in the world.
Chen Shengnan didn't say anything more. It was almost time, so she went to the field with her father to weed.
Along the way, Mr. Chen received many envious glances; "Old man Chen, what good fortune! Our village's first college student this year comes from your family."
Mr. Chen chuckled and said, "It's all thanks to Shengnan's hard work. She didn't forget to study even while in the countryside. Isn't this just a coincidence?"
After hearing what her father said, Chen Shengnan wished she could disappear into a crack in the ground, and she would show off every time she came out.
It's made her afraid to go out now.
They hadn't gone far when they ran into another one: "Look, the only college student in our village is back. I heard you've taken a fancy to the fourth son of the Jiang family. If you ask me, you should have looked for him back in school. You haven't seen the kind of life the eldest son's wife is living."
