"It's too late, and I find it dirty, so let's call it a day! Otherwise, I really will report Ye He to the school for being so young and morally corrupt, interfering in other people's relationships. I don't think the school can tolerate such a morally bankrupt student! Even if the school doesn't do anything, the way the other students look at her will probably make her feel like she's sitting on pins and needles."
Ye He looked pitiful, tears welling up in her eyes, and said to Jiang Jindao, "Brother Jiang, I don't want to leave school. I've always envied others who can go to high school. I want to get into university on my own merit. Brother Jiang, please, don't let Sister Shengnan report me to the school."
After saying that, she looked at Chen Shengnan again and said, "Sister Shengnan, I'm begging you, I really never thought of competing with you for Jiang Ge. I just came here to study. Please don't report me to the school, okay? I promise I'll stay far away from Jiang Ge from now on."
Chen Shengnan didn't respond to Ye He's words. She just looked coldly at Jiang Jin and said, "How about it? Can I return my jade pendant? Otherwise, I'll make sure your precious girl doesn't go to school."
She wasn't joking at all; if he really refused, she would genuinely report him to the school.
Jin turned to Ye He on the hospital bed behind him and said, "Comrade Ye, don't be afraid. Sheng Nan is the kindest person. She's never liked to argue with others since she was little. She always just says it, and I guess she's just trying to scare me."
Ye He gritted her teeth so hard they almost broke; she was only fooling herself.
Chen Shengnan's words were resolute; she could tell that Chen Shengnan wasn't just talking.
"But Shengnan doesn't seem to be joking."
Chen Shengnan retorted sarcastically, "Yes! Comrade Ye, you're right, I'm not joking. I guarantee I won't receive my jade pendant for half an hour today. This afternoon, I'll go to the school to spread Comrade Ye's good name far and wide; then, I'm sure many people will want to get to know Comrade Ye."
"Shengnan, what happened to you? I hardly recognize you anymore. You weren't like this before."
Su Li couldn't help but purse her lips: "You've slept with someone else yourself, and now you're saying Sheng Nan has changed? I've really broadened my horizons. Your ability to turn the tables is truly masterful."
"You, you Su Li, no wonder Gu Huanian ran away at the wedding. With your unforgiving nature, who could stand you? If you ask me, he was right to run away."
"Smack!"
Jiang Jin was slapped again, and Chen Shengnan angrily shouted, "Jiang Jin, I only realized today what I've loved. Don't force me to hate you, give me back the jade pendant!"
Jin took the jade pendant off his neck and reluctantly handed it to Chen Shengnan.
Chen Shengnan snatched it from his hand, hoping he would hand it to her, but it would probably take an hour.
“Jiang Jin, I will write back today and return all the betrothal gifts your family gave us. From now on, we will go our separate ways and have nothing to do with each other.”
Jiang Jin only realized now that Chen Shengnan was serious about him. Ironically, just a moment ago he thought she was playing hard to get.
"Ah Li, let's go!"
Chen Shengnan pulled Su Li towards the door of the ward.
The woman in the next bed secretly gave Chen Shengnan a thumbs up; "Good job, young lady! You shouldn't take a man like that even if he were given to you for free."
They've all slept with other people. Not only would the young girl find them unattractive, but even the old woman wouldn't be interested.
Thinking of this, she looked at the little girl on the hospital bed, shook her head and thought to herself; this girl is clueless.
The man's heart isn't with her; he's not chasing after a business, but rather a resentful couple. Even if they get together, their future won't be easy.
Chen Shengnan walked out of the hospital and breathed a sigh of relief. "Ali, how did things end up like this between us? I always wanted to spend my whole life with him."
“Shengnan, you have to learn to let go of some people and some things. He may be irreplaceable in your memory, but that doesn’t mean he won’t turn out bad in front of you. You imagined him to be too good before. It’s better for you to see him for who he really is sooner.”
Chen Shengnan nodded; "You're right. I used to romanticize him because I kept thinking about things from when we were little. Now I see that he's nothing special."
Su Li knew that forgetting someone wasn't easy, and Chen Shengnan was a very sentimental person.
Otherwise, she wouldn't have kept this in mind for so many years, almost for so long. She smiled and said, "The matter is resolved. This is my first time in Huashi. I heard there's a Pu'er Lake here, and a Rainbow Bridge over there. How about we go check it out tomorrow? I brought my camera with me."
"Okay, let's go see it together."
The two went to the post office first, and Chen Shengnan wrote a letter to her parents, telling them to return the betrothal gifts from the Jiang family.
Su Li took out several photos she had taken last time from her bosom, or rather, from her spatial storage.
"Put this in the letter and send it together, so the old man won't worry."
Chen Shengnan took the photo; it was taken at Tianmen Square that day.
She was smiling happily in front of the five-star red flag at the time, and there's another picture of the three of them.
Chen Shengnan chose two solo photos, both of them showing her smiling happily at the scenery, and also picked a photo of the two of them with the baby, and sent them back together in the letter.
"Thank you, Ah Li."
"I consider you a sister, and you're being so polite with me," Su Li teased with a smile.
Unbeknownst to Chen Shengnan, a week later, her parents received a letter from her. They were genuinely happy to hear that she had broken up with Jiang Jin and had gotten the jade pendant back.
The letter only mentioned that the reason she separated from Jiang Jin was because of Ye He, an orphan girl in the village.
They actually got involved together.
Chen's parents were illiterate, so the letter was read to them by the young man next door.
Hearing this, Chen's father cursed, "I knew there was no good in their family. Like father, like son. Look at his father and that widow Liu exchanging glances. Do they really think no one can see it? I didn't expect that this girl, who just got engaged, will be just like her father. What a bastard."
Mother Chen also said angrily, "Isn't that right? Do they think our daughter is easy to bully? They're really blind. Our daughter is such a good person, and he actually went and had an affair with that slut from the Ye family. Luckily, our daughter found out about this. If something like this had happened after she got married, our daughter's life would have been miserable."
The young man reading the letter also felt that Jiang Jin had gone too far. He already had such a good partner as Sister Shengnan, yet he was still messing around outside.
Ye He was no good. Once, he came home late and passed by Ye He's house with the gate open. He heard her say to her grandmother who raised her, "You old hag, why don't you just die? You're sickly all day and don't do any work. You're just a burden to me."
