Chapter 66 Severely Wounded, Lou Yan Begs the King of Hell to Spare Xu Congjing's Life. ...
She had escaped the clutches of evil, but Xu Congjing received news that she had been kidnapped. This was clearly a trap!
Meng Lingshang had lied to him, saying she didn't know the purpose of his trip and feared it would be fraught with danger. Lou Yanxu's eyelids trembled, a chill crept up her limbs, and a strong sense of unease welled up in her heart. Seeing Yun Lu all dressed and ready to depart, she suddenly realized what was happening and asked, "Aren't you going with your husband? Where are you going?"
Yun Lu gazed intently into the distance, his heart filled with unbearable turmoil. He clenched his fist and had no choice but to say, "I have a mission to complete." Knowing that his beloved had fallen into a trap but being unable to personally rescue him was agonizing! Yet, he had something more important to do; the opportunity was fleeting and could not be missed.
He briefly explained the matter of entering the palace to Lou Yanxu, saying that if that was a trap, wasn't this one as well?
At this moment, Wen Jie, his fingers pierced by the leather straps, arrived. He had volunteered to impersonate Xu Congjing for this mission. His father had been killed years before, and this hatred had been buried deep in his heart for many years. Now, given this opportunity, his eyes showed no fear of death, only the thrill of reaping his enemy. He nodded to Lou Yanxu, his face expressionless, and said, "It's about time. Let's go."
Lou Yanxu had a general understanding of the matter concerning Xu's father and Wen's father, and knew that tonight was of utmost importance to the two of them. Therefore, she did not say much, but only asked Yunlu for a team of elite soldiers to support Xu Congjing.
Just before setting off, she glanced at him again, then walked to Wen Jie's side and reminded him, "Young Master Wen, please be careful in everything you do." This journey was even more dangerous, and she feared that if anything happened to him, Qing An would be haunted by nightmares for the rest of her life.
Wen Jie moved his lips, grabbed a handful of hair in frustration, and his heart ached as he spoke, "If...if I really can't come back, please persuade Qing'an to find a good family for me."
“You know her, once she's made up her mind, she'll never change it.” She patted his shoulder, avoiding any discouraging words, and smiled, “So, come back safe and sound.”
The situation was urgent, so she stopped there and turned to leave, heading straight for the outskirts of the city.
The moon cast a crescent-shaped shadow, and a light night mist spread out. The bamboo forest on the outskirts of the city was bent over by the strong wind, and strange cries of night birds rose and fell from the trees, only ceasing when they reached the dilapidated wooden house at the end.
Xu Congjing stood at the door with his sword in hand, his ears twitching alertly. Sure enough, he sensed that there were many people lying in ambush in the shadows. Without hesitation, he broke down the door and entered. He saw "Lou Yanxu" with her head covered and tied to a creaking wooden chair, mumbling incoherently. He scanned her up and down a few times, his handsome brows furrowing slightly.
"You've arrived." Meng Lingshang stood opposite her with a gentle smile, appearing harmless as if the person who had committed all sorts of evil deeds was someone else entirely.
He pointed his sword at her, his eyes hardening. "Release her."
“I’m both happy and unhappy that you came.” She drew her dagger, her eyes revealing a morbid love. “My father has discovered your identity. He won’t let you go. All the evidence is fake. It’s just a trap to lure you in. But I can’t bear to do that, so I lured you here to save your life. That’s why I’m so happy that you came. But the thought that you came because you care about her makes me unhappy.”
This was a slap in the face. He had anticipated Meng Shicheng's intention to kill him, but the connection to the evidence Cao Ying mentioned proved that this man was indeed the enemy he had been pursuing for years. However, he didn't believe the evidence was false; otherwise, Meng Shicheng wouldn't have suddenly exposed himself after so many years of silence. But to avoid future trouble, Meng Shicheng would undoubtedly go all out in this battle for a fatal blow. Wen Jie was in danger!
Fortunately, he was prepared. Thinking of this, he felt a little relieved and glanced at Meng Lingshang with a hint of sarcasm. "He wants to kill me, but how could I not want him to die without a burial place? He can set up a trap, and I can set up a trap within a trap."
Meng Shicheng was simply relying on his superior numbers to take his life unnoticed on the way, but he never expected that his men had already gone to the Eastern Palace with the Crown Prince's token to ask for help. At that time, all those treacherous officials would be surrounded and none of them would be able to escape.
Although Meng Lingshang had never truly experienced Xu Congjing's methods, she knew her father's skills best. A person who could fight to a standstill was no ordinary person. However, a fight between two fierce tigers would inevitably result in mutual destruction, which was not something she wanted to see.
"Can you two stop fighting? I knew your identity all along, but I kept it a secret for you, so I didn't deliver a fatal blow to you before you were strong enough. For the sake of me saving your life, please stop!" She was still confident that she could clear herself of the matter with Xu Suirou, but ever since she learned that Xu Congjing was the son of Xu Jingzhi, she knew that there would be an indelible hatred between the two of them for the rest of their lives. But she was not willing to give up. She was determined to grow old with the one she loved. Under difficult circumstances, she did the only thing that she was sorry for her father.
What right does the murderer of one's father have to talk about gratitude? She, the Meng family, humiliated Rou'er and harmed her father. He wants to take on the challenge and see what kind of monster this is! Xu Congjing sneered, "No wonder I failed to lure him out despite my many schemes. It turns out you were the one who interfered. If it weren't for you, I would have already taken my revenge."
Having said that, he took a small step closer, raised his right arm, and saw "Lou Yanxu" struggling, stamping her feet together, it was unclear whether she was asking for help or urging him to leave, so he squinted to examine her closely.
"Don't come any closer!" Meng Lingshang pointed the dagger forward, her other hand slowly covering her chest. "I don't want to see you die. I really love you. What have I done wrong? Why can't you give me a chance? Why are you so cruel to me?"
Xu Congjing sneered, "The world has really changed. A person who has committed heinous crimes is now accusing the world of injustice and unfairness. He is shameless and will be a laughing stock for all time!"
"It is you Meng family members who deserve to die! Not my father." He glanced around almost imperceptibly and said loudly, "What you have done will surely be punished by Heaven in its cycle of rebirth. Even if I die, I will never associate with such despicable people as you!"
Words like "divine retribution" and "scoundrel" stung Meng Lingshang's heart. She finally realized that the man in front of her was neither easy to influence nor easy to control. Therefore, she put away her pretense and revealed her murderous intent on her face. Her voice was deep and heavy. "Since that's the case, don't blame me for being impolite."
Xu Congjing could sense that this madman before him was driven by a dual nature: either he would possess what he loved, or he would destroy it. However, he had long suspected this, and thus attempted to step forward to remove the hood from "Lou Yanxu's" head. But the people lying in ambush, having received a signal, immediately swarmed out, wielding swords, spears, and clubs, all striking with deadly force.
The group of people came on fiercely like a sudden storm, precisely seizing every weakness of his, as if they had been trained for years just to take his head one day. Fortunately, he was not just a showy fighter; while dodging and weaving, he nimbly twisted his wrist, and with a flash of sword light, swept across the area.
After a fierce struggle, Xu Congjing stood unsteadily, looking down at the crowd with disdain.
Outnumbered, they still couldn't kill him! The young woman, her eyes filled with malice born of love turned to hatred, suddenly remembered the hostage in her hands. She swiftly raised her dagger, pressing it against "Lou Yanxu's" neck. "Don't move! Move again and I'll kill her!"
Xu Congjing hesitated for a moment, but he quickly realized that it was not the real Lou Yanxu. His eyes sharpened, and he gripped the sword in his hand, ready to strike.
In the blink of an eye, a young man burst through the window and kicked Meng Lingshang against the wall. The dagger fell to the ground, and Meng Lingshang clutched her stomach and bent over, her face turning blue with pain.
Xu Congjing glanced around and realized with dismay that Yun Bing had come to rescue his sister, thinking she had been kidnapped. Sure enough, he rushed over, ripped off the man's hood, and exclaimed, "You're not my sister!"
Before he could react, the imposter had already broken free of the ropes, revealed a short knife from his sleeve, and thrust it straight at him!
Xu Congjing reacted quickly, leaping forward to push Yun Bing aside, but it was too late to dodge. The blade tip pierced his chest, and the pain numbed his entire body. With a hardened heart, he swung his sword and cleaved Yun Bing's head off, blood splattering everywhere.
"You surnamed Xu!" Lou Yunbing exclaimed in shock at the sight of his instantly defeated face. But before he could even regret it, the guards around him had already returned, forming an encirclement with all their weapons.
Lou Yunbing tried to defend himself, but his opponents outnumbered him. He wasn't a trained fighter and his basic skills were lacking, so he inevitably suffered some injuries after a few moves. Seeing this, Xu Congjing had no choice but to grit his teeth and push forward. Although his steps were slightly unsteady, his eyes were sharp and his momentum was unstoppable. He forcefully withstood a series of attacks and unleashed a deadly combo.
After several rounds, Yun Bing gained some inspiration and, with his help, killed several people. The remaining people were also seriously injured. Seeing this, Meng Lingshang slapped her thigh in dismay. Xu Congjing still had strength left. If they continued to entangle themselves, she was afraid she would not be able to escape her fate. So she moved her hand and pulled down the trap that had been set up.
Arrows rained down, dense and powerful. The two men barely managed to hold them off, their bodies covered in arrow grazes, their clothes torn, and blood seeping through. In the blink of an eye, the enemy had vanished. Xu Congjing, finally exhausted, collapsed.
Yun Bing rushed over to check his breathing. He was slightly relieved when he felt a faint breath. He then carried him on his back with all his might and rushed back to the city without regard for anything else.
"Don't die, don't die..." His chest felt like it was being crushed by a heavy object, making it hard to breathe. His calf muscles trembled uncontrollably, and a huge sense of panic swept over his entire body. He ran while praying to the gods, "Don't die, don't die."
His older sister loved him so much, what will she do if he dies? How will he explain this to her?
He ran for an unknown amount of time, until his whole body began to ache and weaken. Sweat poured into his eyes, blurring his vision. Through the blur, he could vaguely make out his elder sister. He initially thought he was hallucinating, until he heard a familiar voice beside him, bringing him back to reality. "Yunbing? What's going on?"
In the darkness, Lou Yanxu was hurrying towards the outskirts of the city when she saw him carrying someone on his back in the distance. Upon closer inspection, she nearly fainted.
Xu Congjing had lost consciousness, his palms were as cold as ice, and blood was gushing from his chest, staining Yun Bing's back red. She forced herself to calm down, put him on a horse and sent him back to the Xu residence, and then ordered someone to fetch a doctor.
Under the shimmering moonlight, the crescent moon hung coldly in the sky. She felt icy cold and dared not think of anything more. Numbly, she returned to the Xu residence, crying out, "Where is the doctor? Has the doctor come yet?"
The doctor rushed over as fast as he could and finally arrived. Carrying his medicine box, he ran inside without stopping, nearly stumbling before finally reaching the bedside.
Lou Yanxu waited outside the door, the strong smell of blood constantly stimulating her senses. She squatted down, biting her fist, and muttered to herself, begging the King of Hell to spare her life.
Yun Bing hung his head, not daring to look at her. His hands lay on his knees, his fingers curling and then spreading. He even breathed cautiously. Finally, he murmured apologetically, "Sister, it's all my fault. He was trying to save me..." After saying this, he regretted it so much that he immediately closed his eyes. Xu Congjing probably realized it was fake long ago, which is why he resolutely started the conflict. But he didn't even recognize his own sister. What a sin!
Lou Yanxu looked up upon hearing this, showing no sign of blame. Instead, she gently comforted him, "They are the ones who are wrong. What wrong have you done?"
Before the siblings could say anything more, Qing'an burst in, shouting, "Doctor! Quickly, call a doctor!"
The two were startled, and then saw Wen Jie being carried in covered in blood. Lou Yanxu felt a dryness in her throat. Overnight, both brothers were seriously injured, which meant that the Xu family had lost its backbone.
Tears welled in her eyes, and she almost instantly stood up, clenching her fists to force herself to calm down. Gone was her usual gentle and quiet self. She calmly stepped forward, grabbed Yun Lu's arm, and asked, "Yun Lu, have you caught him?"
"Don't worry, my lady, everything is going smoothly here." Yun Lu was anxious to go inside to check on Xu Congjing after learning that he was injured, but she held him back tightly. "The longer it goes on, the more things might go wrong. I'll guard this place. You go and interrogate him immediately to prevent any unforeseen circumstances."
Lou Yanxu was unaware that Xu Congjing already knew the identity of their enemy. She only thought that in such a critical moment, she could not just wallow in grief, but had to do something before the enemy could react.
Yun Lu withdrew his foot from the room. Knowing that his master was unconscious, and that Lady Lou was the head of the Xu family, he trusted her to interrogate him. So he said nothing more and went to carry out the order.
After watching him leave, Lou Yanxu ran to Wan Qing'an's side. Looking at her anxious face, she had no choice but to speak, "Qing'an, I know it's a bit inappropriate, but I'll only feel at ease if you go. As for Madam Xu..."
Both women understood that they had fought their way out of their predicament with great difficulty, and if Madam Xu were captured and used as a threat, all their efforts would be in vain. Both young ladies were capable of handling things on their own, and under such circumstances, they could not simply sit and wait for their doom.
"I understand." Wan Qing'an glanced longingly at Wen Jie, who lay lifeless on the bed, wiped away her tears, and instructed, "Yan Xu, no matter what the outcome, please be sure to let me know."
Lou Yanxu nodded, encouraging herself and others, "Everything will be alright."
The Xu residence fell silent, with only the physician bustling about, while she and Yun Bing assisted him. Around midnight, the physician finally washed his hands and stopped stabbing.
Lou Yanxu unconsciously gripped her sleeve tightly, feeling a momentary suffocation, and cautiously asked, "How is it?"
The doctor looked up, his brow furrowed with worry that lingered for a long time.
