Unexpectedly, the head constable only glanced at the paper package before looking away. "Neighbors can testify? What kind of testimony can neighbors give? Did they see Xiao Liu asking you to poison someone, or did they hear Xiao Liu telling you to use this thing to harm someone? If you really saw or heard it, just find them and have them testify on the spot."
"I, I..." The man choked.
Such sordid things are best kept hidden, so how could they possibly be heard by outsiders?
His eyes darted around for a moment, then lit up. "My wife can testify. She was the one who brought Xiao Liuzi with her. She listened to the whole thing."
As he spoke, he grabbed the young woman's hair and dragged her over, saying, "Quickly tell the officers that it was Xiao Liu Zi, it was Xiao Liu Zi who told us to use this thing to harm people!"
The young woman whimpered in pain, but just kept shaking her head. This enraged the man, who slapped her twice more. "You wretched woman! Even at a time like this, you still want to protect your lover? If your lover is so good, why the hell are you marrying me? Wouldn't it be much easier if you just became his concubine..."
"Enough!" Seeing that the conversation was going off-topic, Su Hua quickly spoke up, "Xiao Liu Zi asked you for a favor, so of course he has to pay you. Why don't you take out the money pouch and sachet that contain the money and show them to the official? Isn't that more reliable than your wife's testimony?"
Upon hearing this, the man slapped his forehead. "Yeah, how could I not have thought of that!"
He quickly unbuckled his belt, rummaged around inside, and finally pulled out a bright green sachet, which he popped open with a snap.
Two gleaming silver coins rolled off the sachet and onto the ground.
"This is the reward Xiao Liuzi gave me when he came to me. He said that if I succeeded in getting Zuixianju to obtain the Malatang recipe, he would give me another tael of silver as a reward. The twin lotus flowers on the sachet are the embroidery skills of Xiao Liuzi's wife!"
After saying that, he put the sachet to his nose and took a deep sniff. "And this fragrance, it's the scent of Xiao Liu's wife. If you capture Xiao Liu, you'll definitely find a sachet on him that looks and smells exactly the same!"
The crowd couldn't help but twitch at the sight of the man's reckless demeanor.
Xiao Liuzi seduced his wife, so he hid her sachet in his crotch.
That's a really disgusting method.
However, with both witnesses and physical evidence, if the yamen runners continue to protect Zuixianju, things could get out of control if the matter reached the county magistrate.
The head constable squinted at Su Hua for a long time, then gestured to his henchmen behind him, "Since this case is so complicated, one of you go to Zuixianju and bring Xiao Liuzi to the county office for questioning, and the other of you come with me to take the couple and the Su siblings back to the jail. We'll talk about it after we've investigated the matter."
"Yes." A thin constable behind him clasped his hands in acceptance and ran towards Zuixianju.
The three Su brothers were all taken aback.
Even though the truth had already been revealed, the head constable still wanted to arrest them and throw them in jail.
If he dares to do this in public, wouldn't he decide his own crime and even his life once he's in jail?
Moreover, Xiao Liuzi was just a servant at Zuixianju. He didn't mention his master, Song Jiaren, at all. He only questioned the servant, but the victims were directly imprisoned. How unfair is that?
Su Hua's almond-shaped eyes turned cold. "Now that we have both witnesses and physical evidence, it's a done deal that Zuixianlou poisoned us. Instead of arresting the poisoner, you're arresting us victims. What law of the Great Yu are you relying on?"
"You're just a lowly commoner. How dare you ask which law you're acting on? We officials have our reasons for arresting people. Do you expect us to explain ourselves to you?" The lead constable sneered with a savage grin.
He drew the large sword from his waist.
He walked towards Su Hua.
"When the government investigates a case, those who refuse to cooperate will have to ask this knife in my hand if it agrees!"
The Su brothers' eyes narrowed as they saw the gleaming blade, but they immediately formed a wall of flesh around Su Hua.
"Arrest me if you want, go to jail if you want, but don't arrest my sister!"
"What happened today has absolutely nothing to do with my sister; she was just playing around!"
"Yes, she knew nothing about it. Arrest me, arrest me..."
Once a young woman is in jail, her reputation is ruined, regardless of what has happened. What they fear even more is that they won't be able to protect her while she's in prison.
Su Dahu clenched his fists, his eyes dark and brooding.
Only now did he truly understand what Hua'er had said yesterday: people like them, without power or influence, painstakingly acquire a little something good, only to end up benefiting others.
"Ha! It's too late to say it now!" The head constable sneered, slowly slicing the Su brothers apart with the tip of his knife, his tone icy cold. "You don't want me to arrest this little girl, but I'm going to arrest her anyway. What can you do about it?"
Just as the tip of his knife was about to touch Su Hua's chin.
A whooshing sound rang in my ears.
"Whoosh!"
"Clang!"
The broadsword was knocked to the ground and shattered into pieces.
Everyone turned their heads and saw a tall, snow-white horse galloping towards them.
The horse has snow-white fur, strong hooves, and a mane that floats in the wind, like a soft and shiny satin.
The carriage pulled behind the white horse was even more exquisite, with a huge luminous pearl inlaid on the door, the four sides of the carriage wrapped in sky blue silk, and intricate patterns carved on the black windows. If you got close, you could smell the fragrance of wood in the carriage.
As the fragments of the broadsword fell, the carriage curtain was lifted, and a boy of about twelve or thirteen years old stepped out.
