The woman watched the carriage gradually head towards the end of the village, her eyes burning with even greater intensity.
With the addition of this carriage today, the Su family now has a total of three carriages. Moreover, there are two large horses, one red and one black, beside the carriages, each more handsome than the last. These horses alone are worth a considerable amount of silver.
When the Meng family first became wealthy, they had only managed to buy one blue cloth carriage.
Thinking back to the imposing grand restaurant in the center of Qingshui County, these horses seem insignificant, not to mention Zaozhuang in Wangjia Village next door, where two hundred acres of fertile land and fifty acres of hills now belong entirely to the Su family.
Furthermore, the two girls sitting on the carriage shaft and driving the carriage were completely unfamiliar faces. Could they be maids bought by the Su family to serve them?
She had only been away from Shanghe Village for less than two months, but it felt like a lifetime had passed, and everything had changed.
If Zicai hadn't broken off the engagement with Su Hua back then, this restaurant, Zaozhuang, the big house, and the maids would all belong to the Feng family now...
"Oh, what's the scholar's wife thinking about standing here?" Mudfish Mother walked back with her rice bowl in her hand, glanced at the person by the wall, and suddenly laughed out loud. "Could it be that you've seen Hua'er become successful now and want to cling to her again?"
Mother Feng felt a lump in her throat from laughing, but she forced a smile and said helplessly, "Mudfish Mother, that's not right. What do you mean, 'we should cling to her'? Maybe Hua'er has always had my son on her mind..."
Upon hearing this, a group of villagers gathered around, their eyes filled with mockery as they looked at Feng's mother.
"Trying your son? Your son, who's all talk and no action but gambling?! Even a dog would shake its head at that!"
"That's right. Only that girl Yun from the Meng family treats him like a treasure. Any other decent girl, as long as she's not blind, would avoid your gambling-addicted scholar."
"That's right, now Hua'er is surrounded by young masters and ladies. Not to mention the magistrate's son, even the eldest son of the Xiao family is a thousand times better than your gambling scholar. Hua'er must be out of her mind to be eyeing your son!"
"When the scholar's mother used her wicked schemes to force Huaya to break off the engagement, she certainly didn't expect this day to come, did she? Now she actually has the nerve to try and cling to him. Her skin is thicker than the city walls of Qingshui County!"
"People need to have a sense of shame, just like trees need bark, but the Feng family, from top to bottom, are not the kind of people who care about their reputation. Otherwise, they wouldn't have repaid kindness with enmity back then!"
Your scholar son once said that someone with his academic achievements would rather marry a pig or a dog than marry Hua'er. If he really tries to get close to the Su family again, I'll bring my whole family to climb over your wall and laugh at us..."
The sarcastic remarks grew louder and louder, making Feng's mother's ears burn, especially the words "gambling scholar," which pierced her heart with a sharp pain.
Even her usual gentle demeanor faltered. "You people!! The things you're saying are just too awful!"
Zicai was merely misled by Meng Fu, a petty hoodlum, and forcibly dragged to the casino. He was not a gambling addict at all; he was still a student of Qingshan Academy and the only scholar in Shanghe Village.
"You're insulting my son and me like this now. Don't come back to regret it when your son passes the imperial examinations and achieves great success!"
"Ha, regret? Now who knows who's regretting it to the core!" The men in the village laughed even harder when they heard her threat.
"Your gambling-addicted scholar still dreams of passing the imperial examination and achieving fame and success! He'll probably never see that in his lifetime."
I bumped into him under the willow tree by the river yesterday. He was still shouting in his dream that he would buy a big one but not a small one.
"Is the scholar's wife planning to have him roll dice to take the exam? Hahahaha..."
These words immediately drew laughter from the villagers.
Feng's mother, however, seemed to have been suddenly stabbed in the lungs. Pointing at the man who had spoken, she cursed, "You'll never see that in your entire life! In this life, the next life, and the life after that, you'll only be a farmer toiling in the fields!"
I've already said it, my son is not a gambler!
It's all Meng Fu's fault! That debt collector Meng Fu harmed my son, dragging him to the gambling den to ruin him..."
As she cursed, the woman picked up stones from the ground and hurled them at the Meng family's gate, making it bang loudly.
The stones smashed into the door, leaving dents of varying sizes, before falling into the sewage in front of the door, gradually intensifying the stench in the air.
Seeing her frenzied appearance, the villagers didn't say anything more. However, after smashing more than ten stones, the Meng family's gate suddenly opened from the inside.
Immediately, a gloomy face appeared through the crack in the door.
Seeing this, Feng's mother abruptly put the stone she had picked up back.
Meng Yongfu, leaning on his cane, glared at the woman with a chilling look in his eyes. "What did you just say? That my Fu'er took your son to the casino? Is that right?"
The sudden increase in volume, coupled with the snake's forked gaze, inexplicably made Feng's mother shudder.
She pursed her lips and stiffened her neck, "My son has been well-behaved and sensible since he was little, and he never goes to those shady places."
If I hadn't been led there by bad guys, I wouldn't even have known which way the gambling den faced or how many sides the dice had!
Now that they've been harmed by bad people, would it be against Master Meng's taboo to say a few words?
Having said that, she ignored the man's instantly darkened face and turned and ran away.
She harbored deep hatred for the Meng family.
I thought it was a golden opportunity, but it turned out to be a useless piece of trash!
If it weren't for Meng Yun'er, would the Feng family have simply thrown Su Hua, this golden Buddha, to the ground for nothing?
If it weren't for that damned Meng Fu, her son wouldn't have become addicted to gambling, wouldn't have accumulated huge debts, and wouldn't have turned into the inhuman creature he is now.
