"Dong'er? You're looking for that little baby? You just left, and he went to the kitchen to help wash vegetables." A-Zheng blinked, her beauty mark under her eye shimmering.
“The baby isn’t enough. If Xiao Hua’er needs any help, it’s better to let her older sister do it.”
Su Hua almost laughed when she heard this, "This favor, A-Zheng, can you help me with it...?"
Before she could finish speaking, she caught a glimpse of the two looking bored out of the corner of her eye, and suddenly changed her mind. "If A-Zheng wants to help, that would be wonderful, but I'm afraid she might not be willing."
Azheng looked up and her eyes met the girl's bright, sparkling gaze. Her heart pounded; it was the same look Xiaohua had given the bandits when she was dealing with them at Black Wind Village.
But once spoken, it can't be treated like a fart.
The girl licked her lips. "Little Hua'er, tell me, what do you want to do?"
Upon seeing this, Xue Lao stopped eating his skewers and his ears perked up.
Su Hua smiled and said, "I'd like to ask A-Zheng to act in a play for me."
"What? It's just a play?!" Ah Zheng almost choked on her drink when she heard this. "I thought it was something big. We put on so many plays back in Black Wind Village that we couldn't count them on one hand."
Seeing this, Old Xue's eyes lit up instantly. "Girl, how about counting in this old man for the performance? No need for the performance fee, just give this old man a few skewers of goat meat after the show, okay?"
These past few days, he'd been so bored at the restaurant he was practically growing weeds. He was planning to go back and look after the house for his brat, and if he could manage to snag a few skewers of meat grilled by the girl, that would be a pleasant surprise.
The barbecue at Su Ji Restaurant is delicious, but compared to Ya Tou's cooking, it always feels like something's missing.
Almost as soon as Xue Lao finished speaking, Su Hua smiled and nodded, "Okay, deal!"
One hour later.
An old man and a young man, each with a different expression, went out through the back door. Both were wearing conical hats. One of them bent down and pulled the conical hat curtain tightly shut, while the other nervously but also with a bit of interest blew the curtain.
Outside the gate, four yamen runners dressed in black and blue robes were dozing off against their horses.
Hearing the creaking sound of the door opening, I quickly opened my eyes.
Upon opening their eyes, the five constables and all ten of their eyes widened to their maximum.
A large face, as black as charcoal, with leopard eyes and a lion's nose, loomed large before my eyes, blending into the gradually darkening sky, making it look like a vengeful ghost on the move.
The timid constable jumped three feet high in fright, screaming, "Ahhhhh! A ghost!! A ghost...!"
"What ghost? Where's the ghost?" Old Xue lifted his conical hat, and seeing the man shouting incessantly, he reached out and grabbed the constable. "What ghost are you talking about? This isn't a ghost, it's King Yama, the King Yama who governs life and death. You little brat, you've never seen anything like it..."
The constable stared at the large face that suddenly loomed close to his face, unable to hear what it was saying. He could only see the large, black mouth opening and closing, as if it could devour someone in one bite.
Finally, unable to bear it any longer, she closed her eyes and fainted.
Old Xue quickly caught the person and, looking at the person who was still trembling after fainting, couldn't help but click his tongue, "Oh dear, how can this person be so easily frightened? If he saw that greedy girl, wouldn't he be scared to death? A constable can't be this timid..."
The greedy girl, Ah Zheng, who was pulling at her cone-shaped hat: "…………"
The other four constables, who were caught in the crossfire for no reason: "…………"
Su Hua: "…………"
Finally, Su Hua left the unconscious constable at the restaurant, and after he woke up, she had the waiter take him back to the yamen.
As for the other four, they rode their horses behind the Su family's carriage, all the way out of Tongxin Alley and towards the city gate.
At this point, it was almost time for the curfew in Qingshui County.
There were hardly any people entering or leaving the city at the city gate.
Ah Zheng and Xue Lao sat in the carriage, no longer wearing their hats, each sitting by the window on one side, neither speaking.
The sound of horses' hooves clattered. After a short while, Ah Zheng suddenly opened the carriage window wider. "Isn't this Brother Sanhu? Why is he riding alone on the official road so late at night?"
"Third Brother?" Upon hearing this, Su Hua stuck her head out of the car window and indeed saw a familiar figure not far away.
However, Su Sanhu moved very slowly, just as A Zheng said, as if he were strolling along the road, dawdling for a long time before walking a short distance.
Ah Zheng's voice was quite loud, and the road was very quiet, so Su Sanhu heard it clearly. He stopped and waited for the carriage to arrive.
As they got closer, they could see a gloomy look on the young man's handsome face.
"Huh!" Ah Zheng clicked her tongue lightly, looking on with interest. "What's going on? Did Third Brother get heartbroken by some young lady and come out for a walk late at night to clear his mind?"
Su Sanhu stared at the pale, blood-stained face and swallowed hard. "Who's your third brother? We're the same age. I'm only ten days younger than you."
If you hadn't heard her voice beforehand, just looking at her face, anyone would have thought she had bumped into something dirty.
However, he didn't want to pry too much into his daughter's affairs.
Perhaps it was a new makeup style she and her sister were experimenting with.
“Yes, you’re only ten days younger than me.” A-Zheng saw his expression, and while speaking, she stuck her head out of the car window and then chuckled softly.
“But, let alone ten days or so, even if it’s just one day, an hour, or even a breath, it’s still younger, it’s still my brother, and you still have to call me Sister A-Zheng!”
The girl's silvery laughter, accompanied by the strong smell of blood, made Su Sanhu's heart pound.
Even with so many people around, he didn't dare look any longer and quietly turned his head to look at Su Hua beside him, "Hua'er, Third Brother, Third Brother today..."
But when he thought about the purpose of his trip back, the rest of the words seemed stuck in his throat, like a lump of cotton, and he couldn't get them out.
"It's alright, Third Brother, get in the car first. We can talk about it when we get home." Su Hua waved her hand.
She had asked Qingdai to inquire at the Meng family that Meng Fu had given Liang Siyu three days to raise the money, and today was the last day of that three-day period. She was not surprised at all that Su Sanhu would return.
The carriage traveled south.
We arrived at Shanghe Village at approximately 9:00 PM.
At this hour, the villagers had long since gone to bed, and the entire village was dark except for the moonlight and starlight.
Su Hua instructed the yamen runners to stop all the horses and carriages at the village entrance. Then, the group tiptoed towards the Meng family's large brick and tile house.
From the village entrance to the Meng family's house, there were three households that kept dogs. To avoid causing trouble, she didn't take the main road in the village, but instead led everyone along a small path around the foot of the mountain.
However, when the group arrived at the back of the Meng family's house, they discovered that some members of the Meng family were still awake. Su Hua looked at the familiar east room in front of her, her almond-shaped eyes slightly narrowed.
This is Meng Fu and Liang Siyu's house.
Seeing this, Qingdai touched the wall with her toes, leaped to the roof of the east room, and quietly lifted a tile.
