"Don't worry, Grandma, we'll go right now."
Su Dalang snapped out of his reverie by the aroma and pulled his two younger siblings to leave.
"Wait a minute." Su Hua stood up, took out a large bowl from the side, scooped out half of the steamed egg custard and put it in. "Here, Da Lang, Er Lang, Chun Hua, there's too much steamed egg custard for your little aunt to finish, you can share it!"
"Hua'er, what are you doing?" Su Bai was stunned.
She was worried that her daughter wouldn't have enough to eat, as the steamed egg custard was made from just a small egg and she only ate a few bites.
"You should try some too." Su Hua's lips curled slightly as she scooped up a full spoonful of steamed egg custard and put it into her mouth.
"Hua'er—" Su Bai's thin face was filled with shock, but the egg was already in her mouth and she couldn't spit it out.
I had no choice but to swallow it little by little; the steamed egg custard was piping hot and melted in my mouth.
The sweet aroma brought tears to the woman's sharp eyes.
Seeing her daughter scoop up another spoonful, she quickly reached out to stop her, "My Hua'er has really grown up, and she even knows how to care for her mother now. But I don't like steamed egg custard, so you can eat more of the rest. The other children can just have a taste."
After the woman finished speaking, she immediately scooped several more spoonfuls from her bowl into Su Hua's bowl.
Finally, he handed half a bowl of steamed egg custard to Su Dalang.
"Dalang, Erlang, Chunhua, you must remember this: your aunt loves you the most. She even shares half of her favorite steamed egg custard with you. When you grow up, you must not be ungrateful and forget your aunt's kindness, understand?"
The three of them, Su Dalang, held their bowls and stared wide-eyed at the golden egg custard inside.
And the drool at the corner of his mouth was so embarrassing that it kept dripping all over the floor.
He nodded emphatically immediately.
"Don't worry, Grandma! Auntie is the kindest person to us. We will always remember her kindness and take care of her until the end. As long as we have food, Auntie will definitely get her share!"
Is she an old lady?
Su Hua's lips twitched as she listened to those powerful words.
It has to be said that her mother's brainwashing skills are truly unparalleled.
Su Bai nodded in satisfaction. "Alright! Hurry up and eat, then hurry up and go pull weeds in the field."
"Okay, Chunhua will eat first."
Dalang and Erlang are twins born to Su Dahu and Zhao Shi four years ago. They are now exactly four years old. The two look like they were made from the same mold, with big heads and small bodies, and are as thin as sticks. However, while swallowing his saliva, he scooped up a spoonful of egg custard and put it into the little girl's mouth.
Unexpectedly, a hand reached out from the side and snatched the spoon away.
"Ouch, this steamed egg custard is scalding hot. Let me blow on it for this little girl."
Ms. Qian blew a strong breath into the spoon, but her tongue inadvertently licked away most of the egg custard.
When Chunhua saw that the steamed egg custard was gone, her eyes reddened and she burst into tears.
"What are you crying for? I gave birth to you, what's wrong with having a bite of steamed egg custard?" Qian glared at Chunhua, grabbing the spoon and trying to put it into the bowl, but Dalang dodged it. She just pouted and said, "You child, how can you be so insensible? I'll blow on it for you so you don't get burned."
"Screw you! You're even trying to steal food from a little kid!"
Just as Su Bai was about to enter the house, she turned her toes and grabbed a broom, sweeping it at Qian Shi.
Upon seeing this, Qian quickly hid in the courtyard.
While dodging, she hurriedly smiled apologetically, "Mother, please don't be angry. I was just so tempted by the aroma that I couldn't resist eating a tiny bit. I definitely didn't mean to compete with a little baby for food."
"Get lost! You think I'd believe that?!"
Su Bai was out of breath from running, and angrily threw down her broom. "After you finish eating the steamed egg custard, hurry up and go to the fields to pull weeds. That plot of land near the mountain is all your work! If you don't finish it, you can forget about eating tonight."
"Mother, why am I the only one going? Isn't my sister-in-law going?" Qian's gaze unconsciously wandered towards the kitchen.
Su Bai glared at him with her slanted eyes and pushed him out of the yard. "You shallow-minded thing, always staring at other people. The eldest son and his wife have already gone to the fields. If you don't go soon, you might as well spend the night in the fields."
After saying that, he turned to Su Erhu and Su Sanhu, who were chopping firewood in the outhouse, and instructed them, "Today, the Feng family is giving us 100 catties of white rice. Keep 30 catties for Hua'er to cook porridge, and take the rest to town to exchange for some old rice and coarse flour."
The Feng family mother and son were quite generous when it came to food; their rice jar was full of new rice.
New rice costs five coins a pound, while old rice and coarse flour cost only three coins a pound.
Except for one day after the autumn harvest when the Su family eats rice cooked with new rice, the rest of the time they eat cheaper old rice and coarse noodles.
"Yes, son, we'll go right away." The two Su brothers quickly replied.
Before long, he was carrying a large bag of grain outside.
After this ordeal, the three of them looked rather gloomy, and even the steamed egg custard in their bowls didn't seem as sweet as before.
Su Hua swallowed the steamed egg custard, her heart filled with mixed feelings.
Ultimately, it all comes down to being too poor.
It seems I still need to find a suitable way to make a living.
"Hua'er, after you finish your steamed egg custard, rest well at home. I'm going to the fields." Su Baishi carried a large basket on her back and led her two sons out. Finally, she told Chunhua, "Remember to take good care of your aunt. Be quick and don't let your aunt get tired."
Upon hearing this, Chunhua nodded repeatedly.
Su Hua's eyebrows twitched. How could she let a three-year-old girl take care of a thirteen-year-old girl like her?
This is truly... outrageous! Its mother opened the door for something outrageous! This is outrageous to the extreme!
"Chunhua, come here."
Seeing Su Baishi walk away, Su Hua put down her chopsticks and waved to Chunhua.
