Chapter Ten
When Zhang Xing arrived, he saw Zhou Mo's small, thin body carrying the unconscious Yu Xi on her back, struggling to walk out. Not only were their body sizes very different, but their weights were also very different, making it difficult for Zhou Mo to take each step.
"Zhou Mo, what happened?"
"Don't worry about what happened, lend a hand."
Zhou Mo was no longer in the mood to care about manners. Upon closer examination, Zhang Xing was one of the sources of this trouble.
Zhang Xing strode forward and hoisted Yu Xi onto his shoulder.
Seeing his rude behavior, Zhou Mo quickly stopped him, "He still has wounds on his back, which are probably infected, that's why he fainted from the fever. You... be gentle."
Zhang Xing: "A real man can endure this kind of hardship."
Zhou Mo followed behind Zhang Xing, remaining skeptical of his words. Her gaze fell on Yu Xi, whose face was growing increasingly pale.
A thought flashed through Zhou Mo's mind: Could Zhang Xing be deliberately getting revenge on Yu Xi?
Upon arriving at the hospital, Zhou Mo watched Zhang Xing bustling around taking care of everything and dismissed the idea. How could she possibly assume such thoughts about others? Lately, she had encountered so many bad people that she had started to think the worst of everyone.
The hospital was still overcrowded, but there was less despair than the last time she came. Zhou Mo sat on an iron chair in the hospital corridor, her fingers unconsciously picking at the round hole on it. She didn't even notice when Zhang Xing came out and walked up to her.
"How is he? Yu Xi..."
"It's alright." Zhang Xing scratched his head and leaned against the wall. "It's not too bad either. Such a big cut wasn't treated properly. It's bound to get infected and cause a fever. This kid must have been enduring it for a long time without coming to the hospital. He really doesn't value his own life."
Zhou Mo thought of Yu Xi's murmurs before she fell into a coma, and she pursed her lips.
Zhang Xing stared at the hospital room door, his heart heavy with worry. He was surprised by Zhou Mo's sudden question, "Weren't you planning to reject me? Why are you asking about his background now?"
Zhou Mo was startled. He knew before she even said anything? No wonder he was a soldier. No wonder her father, Zhou Qinian, could always see through her little tricks. It turns out he was trained in the army.
Zhou Mo bit her lip, still keeping her head down, "With your abilities, nothing is difficult for you, but you still came to me, which means that Yu Xi's matter is quite difficult to handle."
“He is indeed difficult to deal with, but after talking to you last night, I thought about it and realized that this matter has nothing to do with you and you shouldn’t be dragged into it. Besides, we all know that no one knows whether that thing is still around or not. If you really take it on, then we don’t know when it will stop.”
"Zhou Mo, you didn't plan to develop any relationship with Yu Xi, did you?"
Zhang Xing's question was somewhat probing. Zhou Mo's change in attitude made him curious about what had happened between them, including Zhou Mo's initiative to ask for help this time. He hadn't had time to investigate yet, and personally, he didn't want Zhou Mo to get involved.
Zhou Mo remained silent, lost in thought.
After an unknown amount of time, she raised her head under Zhang Xing's probing gaze and said firmly, "I want to be his family. Doesn't he have no family? I'm willing to give him one."
"Zhou Mo!" Zhang Xing was startled by Zhou Mo's words and didn't control his voice properly, which attracted the attention of others and a warning from the nurse. Zhang Xing raised his hand to apologize, then bent down and whispered, "Do you know what you're saying?"
“Yu Xi is good-looking, but your priority right now is to study hard and get into a good university. The future is bright, so don’t give up on yourself. If you really have any difficulties, I will help you.”
“Uncle Zhang, he’s family, not a lover.” Compared to Zhang Xing’s anxious confusion, Zhou Mo seemed much more calm and composed. “Besides, don’t you just want me to get close to him and get what his father left behind? There’s no easier shortcut than becoming family. If you want my help, I only have this one request: let me become family with him.”
I want a family.
This is not just Yu Xi's personal sentiment.
It was a wish Zhou Mo wanted but dared not say, a wish she made when she was eighteen. She didn't pray to the birthday candles, or even put her hands together and closed her eyes. It just passed through her mind. If she hadn't been so clear about it, that thought would probably have been less noticeable than dust.
The person who made a wish while unconscious was Yu Xi, while the person who was dreaming while awake was Zhou Mo.
Zhang Xing looked at Zhou Mo with a puzzled expression. He tried several times to persuade her, but swallowed his words when he met her calm eyes. How could he persuade her? How could he persuade her?
Wasn't this the path he laid out for Zhou Mo?
If he hadn't called Zhou Mo to ask for her help, how would Zhou Mo have had the opportunity to make such a request to him?
Zhang Xing finally understood what it meant to lift a rock only to drop it on one's own foot.
"Have you thought it through?" Zhang Xing asked with difficulty.
"I've thought it through."
Zhang Xing: "..." She had made up her mind, but he hadn't.
Zhou Mo said jokingly, "He's an unwanted orphan, and I'm an orphan who lost my family. Aren't two orphans family by nature?"
This was utter nonsense, absolutely the biggest fallacy Zhang Xing had heard all year, but unfortunately, he was a roughneck and didn't know how to refute Zhou Mo.
The main problem is that he has no right to interfere with Zhou Mo.
Because he wasn't Zhou Mo's family, to Zhou Mo he was just someone she had suddenly met, someone who was less of a stranger than a complete stranger.
"Let me think about it, let me think about it."
Zhang Xing ultimately didn't budge. After a moment of silence, he received a phone call. After hanging up, he told Zhou Mo not to wander off and to stay at the hospital and wait for him to return. He assured her that he would make arrangements with the school.
Zhou Mo nodded obediently.
Zhang's expression was indescribable as he walked, and the way he looked at her seemed to be shifting towards the way he looked at Yu Xi.
Not long after Zhang left, the nurse came out and told Zhou Mo that Yu Xi had woken up.
Zhou Mo then remembered that she should notify another family member involved in the case.
Thinking of Yu Xi's unpredictable nature, she felt a little guilty and touched the tip of her nose. What if she was rejected? Wouldn't she make a fool of herself in front of Zhang Xing?
Zhou Mo didn't really intend to help Zhang Xing with anything, but she did want a family.
Even though Yu Xi wasn't her backup option, he was the most suitable one.
Yu Xi, who was on an IV drip, looked somewhat fragile. His eyelids drooped, and it was unclear whether they were open or closed. However, Zhou Mo knew that he was awake. He did not react to any noise until Zhou Mo walked to his ward, at which point he took pity on her and glanced at her.
Zhou Mo suddenly felt a surge of anger. "What kind of look is that? If it weren't for me, you would be dead by now."
"Hehe, that's really funny."
Yu Xi didn't even bother to twitch his lips this time; combined with his icy tone, the sarcasm was palpable.
Zhou Mo wanted to say something unpleasant, but when she saw the redness in Yu Xi's eyes due to the fever, her blocked heart seemed to be jolted, and her mind cleared up.
"Yu Xi, what's wrong with wanting family?"
Yu Xi stirred, trying to pull the blanket over himself, but Zhou Mo didn't give him the chance to escape. "Yu Xi, you probably don't know, but I'm actually the reincarnation of Santa Claus. I can grant people's wishes."
"Are you sick, Zhou Mo?"
Zhou Mo wasn't angry even after being scolded. She grabbed Yu Xi's burning wrist and forced him to look at her. "You have family now. Look carefully and listen carefully. From now on, I am your family. I, Zhou Mo, am your family, Yu Xi."
“You…” Yu Xi was about to retort, but she was speechless when she met Zhou Mo’s unusually serious gaze.
Zhou Mo watched as the red at the corner of Yu Xi's eyes grew more and more intense. She smiled a beautiful smile, just like she always smiled at her father, Zhou Qinian, before going to school. "Call me sister."
"That's not right, I seem to be a year older than you."
"I don't care, call me sister."
Yu Xi was successfully led astray by Zhou Mo, and the two engaged in a heated discussion about who should be the head of the household. In the end, Zhou Mo was elected as the head of the household because she knew the prices of vegetables at the market. However, she also successfully defended her claim that she was the older brother.
Yu Xi watched Zhou Mo stand with her hands on her hips, smiling smugly, and unconsciously a smile crept onto her lips as well.
But he quickly realized something was wrong. "Wait a minute, did I agree to that?"
"Didn't you agree, brother?" Zhou Mo made full use of her advantage, blinking her big, innocent eyes.
Yu Xi's doubts, which were on the tip of her tongue, were abruptly silenced by Zhou Mo's words, "brother."
His thoughts drifted back to that day.
He curled up on the ground, secretly opening his eyes through the cover of his arms to watch Zhou Mo clasp her hands together and fawn over the group of thugs, calling them "brothers."
At that moment, he thought that Zhou Mo had never been so kind to him before, and he was a little angry.
At that moment, he thought that Zhou Mo was being so kind to him now, and he felt a little happy.
Zhou Mo saw Yu Xi reach for her blanket again, trying to cover herself completely with it. This time, she didn't stop her and let Yu Xi do as she pleased.
She stood in front of the bed, slowly fading her smile.
Yu Xi is a very difficult person to understand, but today, she miraculously came to understand Yu Xi.
What an orphan who was abandoned at a young age lacks most is love, isn't it?
Perfect timing, she has plenty here.
The decision to become family was made so absurdly. When Zhang Xing returned after finishing his business, Zhou Mo was already asleep by the bedside, while Yu Xi leaned against the headboard, turning her head to look out the dark window, lost in thought.
The scene is not actually heartwarming; Zhou Mo and Yu Xi seem to be people from different times and spaces, forcibly bound together.
"Yu Xi, let's talk."
Yu Xi ignored Zhang Xing.
This time, Zhang Xing didn't get angry. Instead, he patiently repeated himself, "Let's talk about Zhou Mo. She said she wants to become family with you."
Yu Xi finally reacted this time. He turned to look at Zhang Xing, his face expressionless, and said, "We are already family."
Zhang Xing was about to say something when he saw Zhou Mo lying on his arm, looking at him with no sign of sleepiness in her eyes. He was startled.
Then Zhang Xing raised his eyes slightly and found that Yu Xi was looking at him with the same gaze.
Two people who are completely dissimilar are now strangely synchronized.
Zhang Xing was a little out of breath, and finally managed to say with difficulty, "I understand."
