Chapter Twenty-Nine

Chapter Twenty-Nine

"What are you thinking?" Zhang Xing sat up straight because of Zhou Mo's bold guess. "This involves human trafficking, which is no less serious than the other two."

Hearing Zhang Xing say this, Zhou Mo breathed a sigh of relief. She was terrified. She thought that the child was the "goods" they were talking about. Of course, if it were him, Shawn would have taken him away long ago. How could she have seen the child when she went to the No. 3 disposal room?

"Has Yu Xi been instilling something in you lately? Why are your thoughts so extreme?" Zhang Xing was genuinely worried about Zhou Mo continuing to live with Yu Xi, but then he thought that Zhou Mo was about to go to university, and Yu Xi couldn't leave.

As time goes by, the two will naturally drift apart. Rather than forcing them to separate, it's better to let things take their course. This outcome wouldn't be unfair to Zhou Qinian.

He must have been out of his mind to involve Zhou Mo in this.

“Extreme?” Zhou Mo looked at Zhang Xing and smiled gently. “Uncle Zhang, you are the one who told me that the world is not black and white, and that everyone has things they can’t control. Either you tell me directly, or you don’t say anything. If you make me guess again, I can’t guarantee that I will say something that will shock you.”

Zhou Mo rarely spoke to Zhang Xing so rudely.

Zhang Xing felt uncomfortable about Zhou Qinian's matter, but that was all. However, when Zhou Mo brought it up in public, he lost face, his expression turned ugly, and his attitude became much stiffer than before.

"It's a family secret of someone in the neighboring city of Zhengyang. It's said that whoever gets it will gain that person's support. There are quite a few people who want it, and I don't know how it ended up in Yu Xi's hands. But luckily, he knows his place and knows that it's useless for him to take it, so it's better to give it away."

"You know it was Shawn who took it, right? So why is Sun Zhe still causing trouble for Yu Xi and Qi Kai? If I hadn't gone there that day, Qi Kai's sister, Qi Xiao, would have lost her life. Is this what you call a fight or friction?"

"That's how they initially reported it. Who could have predicted what would happen during the operation?"

Hearing Zhang Xing's words of shirking responsibility, Zhou Mo's suspicions were completely confirmed. She knew her father, Zhou Qinian, all too well. The fact that someone he had never mentioned yet acted so enthusiastically was the biggest flaw in his character.

And she actually foolishly believed that there were people in this world, apart from her family, who genuinely had no ill intentions and would help her.

"Yes, who could have predicted it?"

Zhang Xing was surprised. He hadn't expected Zhou Mo to agree with him, which gave him a secret sense of pleasure. Zhou Qinian was already dead, and his daughter was still young. So what if Zhou Mo inherited Zhou Qinian's temperament? Life was still long. Who knew what Zhou Mo would become in the future?

Mediocre, ordinary, calculating, and drifting with the tide.

Of course, he didn't want Zhou Mo to become anything despicable; he just wanted her to be ordinary.

Zhang Xing lowered his eyes, concealing the malice in his heart.

He was a good person; he took care of his deceased friend's daughter, and everyone praised him for being kind and righteous.

"Alright, Zhou Mo, these things have nothing to do with you. I've already spoken to them. The item isn't in Yu Xi's hands. As long as Yu Xi stops contacting those people, he's safe."

This statement is so well-founded that it leaves no room for error.

As long as Yu Xi doesn't contact the people over there.

Ha, do you think Yu Xi can just cut off contact like that? Qi Kai and Shawn are friends Yu Xi has already broken off with, but those two still keep coming over. Zhang Xing's so-called agreement is not believed by Zhou Mo at all. It's just a way to have an excuse not to take responsibility if something else happens.

"I understand, thank you Uncle Zhang."

"Alright, you've said your piece and told me everything you needed to. It's getting late, so lock the door and get some sleep."

Before leaving, Zhang Xing patted Zhou Mo's shoulder heavily, his gaze lingering for a moment on Yu Xi's door.

Zhang Xing's glance was like Zeus saying, "Never open Pandora's box."

Some people can't resist opening Pandora's box, only to regret it later.

But the prerequisite is that Zeus grants her endless curiosity.

But no one granted Zhou Mo this gift.

Zhou Mo had no interest in those documents whatsoever. She didn't even glance at Yu Xi's door, and sat alone on the sofa.

After some time, she felt the house was too quiet, so she turned on the TV. The TV was showing a scene from "Empresses in the Palace" where An Xiaoniao, wearing a veil and holding a small boat, sang a beautiful song that amazed everyone and won the emperor's favor.

Memories are hazy, as if I were also traveling through the past on An Xiaoniao's awning boat.

In the month leading up to the college entrance examination, Zhou Mo experienced her own test syndrome, manifested as compulsion and anxiety. When eating, she couldn't even stand the haphazardly placed shredded potatoes, spending most of her meal straightening them.

Yu Xi didn't say anything, but the dishes on the table all turned into round shapes: round broccoli, round shrimp, round shrimp paste, and round wontons.

With no outlet for her obsessive-compulsive disorder, Zhou Mo started tidying up the decorations in her home and the direction of the flower pots.

During that period, the flowers in the yard were forced to undergo a collective military training every few hours, standing at attention and at ease were commonplace.

Yu Xi didn't say anything, but before Zhou Mo's obsessive-compulsive disorder flared up, he installed wheels under the flowerpots in advance so that Zhou Mo could handle them more easily.

But Zhou Mo was not satisfied with this, and she began to think of other ways to torture herself.

For example, staying up late at night to count water droplets in the bathroom to train your willpower.

Whether it strengthened her willpower is debatable, but it certainly strengthened Yu Xi's courage.

In the middle of the night, I went to the bathroom and when I opened the door, I saw a disheveled person standing in front of the mirror, muttering to himself, "97, 98, 100."

For a moment, Yu Xi thought that someone from the underworld had come to pick him up.

Yu Xi had no choice but to say something. Zhou Mo's anxiety had reached the point of madness. If this continued, he feared he would have to go to the underworld with Zhou Mo.

Rather than saying what Yu Xi said, it's more accurate to say what Yu Xi did. In fact, what he did was quite simple: he forced Zhou Mo to watch movies all night long, covering a wide range of genres.

Yu Xi discovered that Zhou Mo was very interested in vampire movies. She thought that Zhou Mo would like Twilight the most, but Zhou Mo was particularly fond of Interview with the Vampire. In the end, she stopped watching other movies and watched Interview with the Vampire several times. Later, she even started watching the TV series.

Later, Zhou Mo was so sleepy that she could barely keep her eyes open, but she still forced herself to keep watching. "When you want to live, you can't live; when you want to die, you can't bear to."

Yu Xi tilted his head to look at Zhou Mo. The next second, his shoulder slumped as Zhou Mo leaned against him and fell into a deep sleep. Her long eyelashes cast a shadow that barely overlapped with the dark circles under her eyes. Yu Xi reached out and brushed away the stray hairs on Zhou Mo's cheek. He didn't move, letting Zhou Mo sleep like that, leaning against him.

The vampire movie was still playing on TV, but Yu Xi wasn't watching it very attentively.

Both the movie and the TV series are good. A beautiful, pale vampire walks the world, observes humanity, observes herself, and finally accepts herself in the human world.

This is the vampire's version of events, but what is the real story?

If someone were to interview him about his life one day, what would he say?

Zhou Mo had a dream, a very chaotic dream. In the dream, she seemed to have a telepathic connection with Yu Xi, and she knew everything Yu Xi was thinking.

She heard Yu Xi say that Zhou Mo was a burden and that it would be good to get rid of her.

The next second, she heard Yu Xi say, "Forget it, let's not throw it away. It's fine to keep it as a puppy to play with."

Zhou Mo thought she would be angry, but on the contrary, she felt unusually calm and without any ripples in her heart.

Then she drifted off to sleep and never dreamed again.

As her gaze gradually focused, the scene from "Empresses in the Palace" had changed, presenting another episode worth savoring. However, Zhou Mo had lost interest in watching TV. She casually turned off the television, and the room returned to silence.

There are advantages to quiet. Zhou Mo lay down on the sofa, rubbing her cheek against the soft sofa cover, which still smelled of sunshine. And just like that, Zhou Mo fell asleep.

In the hospital, Yu Xi was engrossed in his phone, which displayed the scene at home. He watched the whole thing, including the conversation between Zhang Xing and Zhou Mo, and the meaningful glance Zhang Xing gave Zhou Mo.

He thought Zhou Mo would go in; he believed Zhou Mo was curious about him.

He didn't think Zhou Mo would be interested in the information, but she should at least be somewhat interested in him; she would see the 'gift' he had carefully prepared for her as soon as she went in.

But no, Zhou Mo didn't even glance at it.

This annoyed Yu Xi. He had met too many people, so he knew exactly what they were thinking. From the beginning, he knew what kind of person Zhang Xing was; it was just that Zhou Mo couldn't see it.

Zhou Mo relies on Zhang Xing. Perhaps she doesn't say it, but her actions speak for themselves. For example, in this fight, the first person Zhou Mo thought of was Zhang Xing.

It's also possible that Zhou Mo couldn't think of anyone else.

But during this conversation, Yu Xi sensed a change in Zhou Mo's attitude towards Zhang Xing. Had something happened? Yu Xi wondered if it was at the door. To be more discreet, the security camera at the door wasn't equipped with an audio recorder, which might have caused him to miss something.

Yu Xi didn't think it was important; he was just a little unhappy that Zhou Mo's change of heart wasn't happening.

But these unhappinesses were insignificant compared to Zhou Mo's refusal to open his door.

"You keep saying you're family, why don't you just push the door open and go in?"

"I've put all the secrets you want to know right there, but you didn't look at them, and you'll never have the chance to look at them again."

Yu Xi frowned as she looked at Zhou Mo, who was asleep on the sofa.

"You've caught a cold, can you still come to the hospital tomorrow?"

"Don't lie to me, Zhou Mo."

"Go back to your room and sleep."

Of course, Yu Xi's suggestion, given from the hospital, would not be adopted by Zhou Mo, who was asleep at home.
