Chapter Thirty-Eight

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Knowing who came to Ming'an City, they would naturally know where Zhou Mo would be.

When Yu Xi and Qi Xiao arrived at the location, He Ru and Qi Kai also arrived. Qi Kai waved to Qi Xiao, but Qi Xiao did not move.

Qi Kai: "Xiaoxiao, come here."

Qi Xiao still didn't move. Qi Kai subconsciously frowned, staring straight at Qi Xiao with eyes like a hunting eagle, full of scrutiny and ruthlessness. "Come here, don't make me say it a third time."

"No matter what deal you made, I will not allow you to hurt my friends."

Qi Kai sneered: "Qi Xiao, how heartbroken your friends who were scared away must be. You've never stood by their side like this before."

Qi Xiao interrupted Qi Kai, "Don't think I don't know. Those people were deliberately placed around me by you, to watch me happily make friends, to watch me feel guilty and apologize with trepidation." She took a deep breath, "Qi Kai, I'm eighteen years old now. I'm no longer the Qi Xiao who needed a guardian when I was little!"

Qi Kai stared, his expression filled with anger. He seemed to want to say something, but He Ru raised her hand to stop him.

"Now is not the time for you to argue."

He Ru waved to Yu Xi.

Yu Xi wasn't as resistant to He Ru as Qi Xiao and Qi Kai. He obediently walked to He Ru's side, and He Ru handed Yu Xi a letter. The letter was so light that he had to hold it down to keep it from being blown away by the wind, but Yu Xi felt that the letter was as heavy as a thousand pieces of gold.

He didn't want to take it, but he had no choice.

"Go ahead, Ah-Xi."

Yu Xi felt a lump in his throat, making it difficult for him to breathe and preventing him from speaking.

Qi Kai looked at it for a long time, then changed his target. "Yu Xi, are you reluctant to part with it? You said you wanted to keep it all to yourself. Giving it to Shawn was just a smokescreen. In the end, it still ended up in his hands. After all the twists and turns, it's yours again."

"If it weren't for Zhou Mo, you would be free."

Yu Xi didn't care how the dog barked; he was just thinking that if he accepted the letter, he and Zhou Mo would owe He Ru a huge favor.

It's one thing for him to owe, but what he owes is far more than just a favor that can be repaid.

But Zhou Mo is different. She has a bright future, a wonderful life, and the opportunity to laugh without any burden.

Yu Xi regretted taking Zhou Mo's college admission letter.

Does he really not want Zhou Mo to leave Ming'an?

At this moment, Yu Xi's blocked heart found a glimmer of hope; he didn't want Zhou Mo to leave him.

"Brother, I..."

He Ru remained the same smiling tiger, a faint smile playing on her lips, seemingly gentle but actually as cold as ice. "Ah Xi, don't do anything foolish."

Qi Xiao also panicked, "Yu Xi, that's Zhou Mo! How can this piece of junk compare to Zhou Mo?!"

Everyone assumed that Yu Xi was reluctant to part with this token, which could connect her with that important person and allow her to live a life of comfort and prosperity.

"I can't..." ruin her life and become an accomplice in Zhou Mo's absence.

Qi Xiao's eyes were red with anger, and tears were about to fall. "Yu Xi! I really misjudged you! You don't care about Zhou Mo at all!"

"What do we care about?" Yu Xi blinked, forcibly suppressing the bitterness in her eyes, her wolf-like gaze shooting straight at Qi Xiao. "What do people like us need to care about?!"

"A person who shouldn't even exist here, because of an unpredictable natural disaster? Because of that ridiculous childish sentimentality, abandons their original life path and steps into the unknown, learning to care for someone who shouldn't exist in their life. But who do they care about? Themselves?"

Yu Xi's repeated questions resonated not only with himself but also with the hearts of everyone present.

He Ru looked at Yu Xi. Unlike others, he didn't have such strong emotional fluctuations, but the smile on his face had faded from the beginning. "If you're not going to deliver it, then I'll deliver it myself."

Yu Xi pressed down on He Ru's shoulder. "I'll go in."

He patted the envelope on He Ru's chest and solemnly said, "I'll go in myself."

"Yu Xi." He Ru got angry and punched Yu Xi hard in the face.

Yu Xi didn't dodge, taking the blow head-on. The inside of his mouth slammed against his hard teeth, instantly tearing open a gash. He licked it, the metallic taste spreading in his mouth, and swallowed it without batting an eye. "Is that enough? Can you move aside?"

Those present couldn't understand what was wrong with Yu Xi.

Qi Xiao: "Yu Xi, what exactly are you trying to do?"

He Ru was about to throw another punch when Qi Kai looked left and right, and finally reached out and grabbed He Ru's wrist. He rarely acted as a peacemaker, saying, "We've all arrived at our destination, why are we still fighting amongst ourselves?"

Instead of shaking off Qi Kai's hand, He Ru used her free hand to punch Qi Kai directly. This punch was even harder than the one she gave Yu Xi. Qi Kai staggered back a few steps and almost fell to the ground.

"Damn it!" Qi Kai spat out a mouthful of blood. "What does this mean?"

"Don't think I don't know what deal you made with Sun Zhe. Ming An is still mine." He Ru didn't even look at Yu Xi and the others, slowly adjusting her coat as she ran upstairs. She only paused briefly when passing Yu Xi. "From now on, don't beg me."

Qi Xiao wanted to say something, but Qi Kai didn't give her a chance to speak and simply picked her up.

"Qi Kai, are you fucking crazy?!"

"Didn't you already know whether I'm sick or not? Didn't you beg me to be your older brother back then? Now that you're all grown up, you think you can run away? No way."

Qi Xiao struggled in vain and could only place her hopes on Yu Xi, but unfortunately Yu Xi didn't even give her a glance.

"You beast! You bastard! Yu Xi, you have to go and save Zhou Mo for me! If anything happens to Zhou Mo, I'll kill you!"

"You think you can kill someone with your skinny arms and legs? Go back and kneel down for family discipline first!"

The sounds of the two siblings arguing faded into the distance.

Yu Xi looked up at the factory gate. He didn't know how much Sun Zhe inside had heard, or if he was already mocking him as a mercenary coward, or how many vulgar words had reached Zhou Mo's ears.

He wasn't a good person to begin with, but he didn't want Zhou Mo to hear those words; they were too disgusting.

Just as Yu Xi was about to step into the factory, the door was suddenly opened from the inside.

Yu Xi stared in disbelief at the person standing inside the door. Her body reacted faster than her brain, and she took three steps at a time to hug the person who opened the door.

Zhou Mo stayed quietly in Yu Xi's arms, smelling the lingering scent of home incense on him.

This smells much better than the gasoline smell in the factory.

"It's alright now."

"sorry."

"It's alright now."

"sorry."

The two were talking to themselves when suddenly a streetlamp in the distance went out for some unknown reason, freeing them from the eerie, cyclical atmosphere.

Yu Xi looked Zhou Mo up and down carefully, making sure she wasn't injured. "Where's Sun Zhe?"

Zhou Mo gestured towards the inside, "He's dizzy, don't worry. I tied him up really tightly. I learned the way to tie fish on fishing boats from a book. Unless he suddenly mutates into the Hulk, he definitely won't be able to break free."

Yu Xi was stunned; he was a little confused by Zhou Mo's train of thought. "Huh?"

"You kidnapped Sun Zhe?"

Zhou Mo raised an eyebrow smugly. "I told him that although I can't beat him, I'm smarter than him. Unfortunately, he didn't listen to me. He deserves it."

Zhou Mo led Yu Xi into the factory, but Yu Xi suddenly pulled Zhou Mo back, causing Zhou Mo to stumble. "What are you doing?"

"Walk behind me, grab my clothes, and when I tell you to run, you run without looking back, do you hear me?"

"Now you're acting like you care about me so much? Just now, He Ru brought out gifts outside, but you still wouldn't redeem me. Yu Xi, aren't you a bit too good at acting?" Although it was supposed to be a question, Zhou Mo said it with a hint of coquetry and teasing.

Yu Xi hung her head, "You heard me."

"I heard you. How cruel you are."

Zhou Mo originally wanted to tease Yu Xi a bit more, but in the dim moonlight, she saw a glint in the corner of Yu Xi's eye.

What kind of light was that?

It was probably the light that Zhou Mo didn't want Yu Xi to appear in.

"Alright." Zhou Mo stood on tiptoe and patted Yu Xi's head. "I understand that you are being hypocritical and that there is another reason behind your words. I don't think I ever said that I chose you not because you are handsome, tall, or smart, but because we are the same kind of people."

"One type of person is someone who wants to be family."

Seeing Zhou Mo's serious-sounding nonsense, Yu Xi couldn't help but laugh. "Did you just deny all my good points?"

"That's just your least noteworthy strength."

Zhou Mo stretched out her palm to Yu Xi, "Today, the head of the family will teach you another lesson. As family members, we can rely on each other, but most of the time we walk side by side. Don't think that I am weak and inexperienced. I can stand with you and face life together."

The moonlight bathed Zhou Mo's outstretched hand in a holy glow. Yu Xi suddenly remembered an unknown TV series: "There was a person whom everyone saw and could never forget; after just one meeting, they pledged their hearts to each other for a lifetime."

TV dramas and movies often exaggerate emotional needs and use emotions as the driving force of the plot. Yu Xi felt that this was weak and vulnerable. How terrifying it would be if people's trajectories were controlled by something invisible, intangible, and mysterious.

Until this moment.

Yu Xi's rationality told him not to get involved.

But he had already abandoned his reason, grasped Zhou Mo's hand, and the two stepped into the dark factory together.

Yu Xi trusted Zhou Mo unconditionally, no matter what was inside, no matter what would happen, even if Sun Zhe was not injured or unconscious, even if he was met with a blow from Sun Zhe, he would accept it.

At this moment, Yu Xi completely regarded Zhou Mo as family, someone he could entrust his life to and the family behind her.

Zhou Mo felt the warmth from her palm and the barely perceptible tremor. Taking advantage of her short stature, she felt it was only natural to peer into her eyes.

But it was dark here, and only when the moonlight was clear could she catch a glimpse of Yu Xi's expression.

She watched Yu Xi frown, watched him ease the worry in his brows, and watched him quietly lower his head to look at the place where their hands were clasped together.

Zhou Mo thought that Yu Xi had become the ideal family member she envisioned, only he wasn't obedient enough.

It's okay, I'll teach you again.
