Chapter 22 Disturbing Him
Chapter Twenty-Two Disturbing Him
Back in the dormitory, Lin Su shared some food with her roommates.
After hearing about her experience today, Sun Xiaoqing said, "I didn't expect it to be like this. Things have been very chaotic lately, making it difficult to travel."
Lin Su: "Yes, so I decided to leave after the New Year."
“Spending the New Year here? That’s fine,” Sun Xiaoqing said. “Our farm slaughters pigs for the New Year, and the farm manager gives everyone a red envelope. It’s not much, but it’s a token of our appreciation. We also put on a variety show.”
"A party?" Lin Su looked at her.
"Yeah, it's just for fun. It's nothing more than singing, dancing, and playing games... You can dance, right? Why don't we rehearse a dance together and have some fun?"
Someone asked, "Does your family know that you were originally going home for the Chinese New Year?"
Lin Su shook her head: "I don't know. I haven't contacted them since I transferred from the sixth division."
The other person stared in surprise, their eyes widening: "You haven't written home at all in the past six months?"
“No, they didn’t look for me either. If they had, the people from the production team would have told me. Maybe they all thought I died in the countryside,” Lin Su replied.
Especially the stepmother; perhaps she genuinely wished that her stepdaughter would die in the countryside.
However, Lin Su didn't care about any of that. It was only mid-January, and the Lunar New Year was just over ten days away. During this time, she could continue to spend her days with Zhou Yunqi.
The next morning, she packed her things, filled her schoolbag with review materials, and went to the sugar factory with Zhou Yunqi.
After arriving in the county town, they went to a breakfast shop first. Lin Su bit into a steamed bun that was oozing with meat juice, her face full of happiness, and exclaimed, "So delicious, so fragrant!"
Zhou Yunqi looked at her and shook his head slightly: "You can be so smug just from eating a steamed bun."
Lin Su said shyly, "It really is delicious."
I vaguely remember the first time I saw her, she was standing by the roadside eating a steamed bun.
I didn't think there was anything special about her at first, but when I saw her for the first time, I noticed the dimples at the corners of her mouth, so I looked at her for a while longer.
Zhou Yunqi looked away and pushed the bowl of tofu pudding away: "Hurry up and drink it, don't dawdle."
Xu Yaodong sat to the side, observing coldly, feeling utterly superfluous. So, as soon as he returned to the sugar factory, he went straight to the unloading area to chat and joke around with people.
In the factory manager's office, there were two desks pushed together. Zhou Yunqi instructed, "You sit on the opposite side."
Lin Su sat obediently at the desk and took out the documents from her bag.
Zhou Yunqi needed to review the production and sales statistics for the past week in the morning, but he soon realized that bringing her to his office was a mistake.
She wasn't studying at all; instead, she kept glancing at him.
At first, she propped her chin up and stared at his area.
Zhou Yunqi raised his eyes and glanced at him: "What?"
Lin Su smiled and said, "I'd like to use your pen; I think your pen is easier to use."
He handed him a pen.
Lin Su grinned as she took the pen and scribbled a couple of lines on the paper.
After a while, she looked up at him again.
Zhou Yunqi: "What is it now?"
"I forgot to bring my water bottle."
Zhou Yunqi said, "Isn't there a water cup here that you used?"
"Then I'll go take a shower."
After finally cleaning the enamel mug that was printed with "1975 National Day Commemoration", she poured in boiling water, sat down... Perhaps it was too novel, she couldn't immediately immerse herself in learning.
She had no choice but to continue propping her chin up and looking at the man opposite her.
In the instant she glanced at him—she couldn't remember how many times—Zhou Yunqi caught her out of the corner of his eye and asked, "What's wrong this time?"
Lin Su was slightly taken aback: "No, no problem."
After saying that, he lowered his head, rested his hands on the table, and pretended to be looking at the question carefully.
He couldn't concentrate on his morning because of her. "Damn it," Zhou Yunqi said coldly, "you're here to study, not to look around. Focus on your reading and writing, and don't be distracted."
"I'm doing it."
Isn't it normal to look up and think for a moment when doing problems?
The winter sun shone through the window. Lin Su had just finished two math problems when her eyes kept drifting uncontrollably toward the figure across the desk, hunched over proofreading data.
The sunlight cast a halo around him. Lin Su looked at his handsome features, noticing that he would occasionally furrow his brow or relax his lips, and that his high, straight nose cast a faint shadow...
This man was so handsome that Lin Su couldn't resist taking out a piece of draft paper, picking up a pencil from the pen holder, and starting to doodle on the paper.
After some time, noticing her quietness, Zhou Yunqi glanced at her, a slight smile creeping onto his lips. She had finally behaved herself; otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to work.
However, as his gaze moved downwards, the man's brow furrowed even more. Hmm? What was she doing?
draw?
It's still him in the painting!
The man's sharp gaze was fixed on her, and when Lin Su looked up to observe him, she was startled.
"What is this drawing? Bring it here." The cold, stern tone brooked no argument.
Lin Su laughed awkwardly, like a student caught messing around in class, and subconsciously pulled out her draft paper and put it under the table.
"It's nothing, I just scribbled a couple of lines. I was doing a math test."
Under the table, she considered crumpling the paper into a ball, but then thought better of it.
He wasn't actually the subject teacher.
She wasn't a high school student; in reality, she was a freshman in college who had just started university.
Before she could react, Zhou Yunqi had already walked up to her, looking down at her with a chilling gaze: "Take it out."
Lin Su craned her neck to look at him, wrinkled her nose, and snorted: "I drew a sketch of you."
After saying that, he placed the sketch paper directly on the table and said shamelessly, "It looks pretty much like the original, doesn't it?"
Zhou Yunqi looked at the lead-gray pattern on the paper and saw her carefree laughter. He was furious and took the draft paper away: "Hand it over, it's confiscated. You won't get lunch until you finish this math test."
Lin Su let him go; a math test, huh? No problem.
The large office suddenly fell silent. After an unknown amount of time, a phone rang, breaking the silence. Zhou Yunqi answered the phone.
Lin Su looked over and saw that his eyelashes were slightly lowered, and the lines of his profile were very clear. He picked up another pen, took off the cap, and held the pen with his well-defined knuckles. The pen tip swept across the paper and left a line of elegant and flowing black characters.
When he looked back, Lin Su pursed her lips, lowered her head, and continued calculating a function problem.
To be fair, the difficulty level of high school curriculum now is incomparable to that of later years; some of the concepts are even covered in junior high. Lin Su felt confident in her abilities, but she didn't dare to be complacent. She'd have a better understanding of her own level once she went to school next semester.
Zhou Yunqi hung up the phone, sat at his desk, and glanced at the person opposite him.
She's quite well-behaved when she's focused on her studies, but...
He had to admit that having her sitting across from him was like a ticking time bomb. He had to keep an eye on her constantly, and her presence would also sway his thoughts.
A logistics manager walked in and was surprised to see Lin Su sitting opposite him.
Seeing that she was working on her homework diligently, he didn't say anything, but handed her a piece of paper and said, "Factory manager, this is the welfare procurement plan for the New Year. Which one do you think is better?"
Zhou Yunqi took the paper and pondered: "Let's revise the first plan. Some employees asked for flour last year, so let's change it to either rice or flour, a bag of apples, a can of braised pork, and a pound of sugar. Go and compile the statistics before making the purchase."
The other party nodded, took the revised plan, and left.
Lin Su's ears perked up at the mention of employee benefits, and as soon as the person left, she chuckled and said, "The employee benefits are really good."
Zhou Yunqi said, "This is nothing. Although the factory produces sugar, it really can't spare any more sugar for the employees. Each person gets one pound by saving every penny."
"This shows that our factory's white sugar is in short supply, which is a good thing." Lin Su rested her chin on her hand, looking at him with bright eyes.
Seeing this, Zhou Yunqi lost his temper: "What are you looking at me for? Hurry up and do your questions."
"I'm done. You can check if you don't believe me."
He was still annoyed: "After you're done, check the answers and redo the questions you got wrong."
Lin Su wasn't annoyed; her words even carried a hint of provocation: "Manager, you probably just can't understand math problems, can you?"
Zhou Yunqi was momentarily speechless at her words, and clicked his tongue, saying, "I actually went to high school, and I often got full marks in science subjects. If I had time to pick up a book like you do, do you think I wouldn't be able to understand it?"
Lin Su exclaimed in surprise, "Wow, what a top student!"
"What?" He frowned.
“It’s nothing,” Lin Su changed her question to, “Which high school did you go to?”
"101".
Lin Su gasped.
This school is beyond the reach of most people, yet his tone remained so calm. But then again, it's part of their daily lives.
And she realized that she didn't really know this man, and she only wanted to ask about these basic things now.
“But I stopped studying after finishing my second year of high school and came here.” He continued calmly.
Lin Su nodded and asked curiously, "Was your arrival here arranged by someone, or did you choose to come here yourself?"
"I chose it myself. They wanted me to go to the Northeast, which is closer to Beijing, but I wanted to go somewhere warmer."
Lin Su: "Who are they?"
The man cast a sharp glance at her, which startled Lin Su for a moment.
Zhou Yunqi said in a low voice, "My father's boss."
Lin Su was stunned. His father held a high position of power back then, so wouldn't his father's superiors be even more powerful...?
She forced an awkward smile: "Yes, it is indeed quite warm here. In winter, a coat is enough, and you won't get frostbite."
Seeing her nodding her head like a chicken pecking at rice, Zhou Yunqi couldn't help but chuckle: "What else do you want to know? Why don't you ask them all at once?"
Uh… Lin Su’s throat was a little dry. She took a sip of water and asked, “What time are we going to have lunch?”
"Wait for Xu Yaodong to come over, and ask him to help move your desk to the inner room while you're at it."
Lin Su was puzzled: "Why move it to the inner room?"
Zhou Yunqi smiled slightly: "The inner room is quiet, which is conducive to studying, and it will also prevent you from chattering and messing around here."
She deflated instantly, like a balloon punctured by a needle, and whispered, "I don't want to go to the inner room. Can I please not bother you?"
The man's deep eyes narrowed slightly, filled with utter helplessness.
Perhaps it's not a matter of arguing; Xu Yaodong is even more talkative than her.
But just sitting there was enough to disturb one's mind.
He disturbs people, but then casually waves his sleeves and buries himself in his studies, ignoring everyone else's well-being.
