Chapter 33 Lin Su, a senior high school student
Chapter Thirty-Three: Lin Su, a Senior High School Student
After resting on his shoulder for a while, Lin Su finally realized what had happened to her.
She was satisfied, but what would Zhou Yunqi think of her?
She's only eighteen!
An eighteen-year-old girl, acting like she's so desperate.
What will he think?
No, no, Lin Su desperately told herself: maybe he didn't take it to heart and just thought she was joking.
And, um? Why does it feel like it's getting more and more uncomfortable?
Lin Su wisely shifted her position and moved away a bit.
Finally, the man, who had almost lost control because of her, breathed a slight sigh of relief. He was clearly the victim, but she was whining and complaining as if she had been wronged.
After enduring it for a long time, the man finally asked in a calm and nonchalant voice, "You have so much energy to make a fuss, doesn't your stomach hurt anymore?"
“It hurts,” Lin Su replied, “...Anyway, you can’t abandon it.”
Zhou Yunqi said helplessly, "Fine, fine, I won't abandon it. You've made it sound like it's illegal, how could I dare to do anything illegal?"
He pulled her off his shoulder, looking at her fair but flushed cheeks. Her eyes darted around like a fawn's, and she glanced at him briefly before immediately looking away.
It seems as if he knew he had just done something wrong and was therefore feeling ashamed.
That's true. I'll be nineteen in six months. I can't be completely clueless.
Even at nineteen, he was still very young. He went to the countryside when he was fifteen or sixteen and was sick every day. What could he possibly know about matters between men and women?
The man gritted his teeth.
Lin Su immediately opened her watery eyes and looked at him.
He looked utterly innocent. Zhou Yunqi was indignant inside, but he still calmly said, "I have to go to that nearby high school to see the teacher this afternoon. Do you have the strength to go?"
Lin Su said, "It should be possible."
"Then you should rest for a bit, I'll prepare the meal later."
"good."
The misbehavior finally came to an end. Lin Su lay on the bed and asked him to draw the curtains.
The nearby high school was a key municipal high school. That day, Zhou Yunqi casually asked the leader for an instruction aimed at helping her solve the enrollment problem.
He has never liked to use these connections. Whether it's this dormitory or this high school, it's all because of her that he went to the leaders to fight for it.
He really broke many rules for her sake. Lin Su thought silently, "If I don't get into a good university, I really won't be able to explain myself."
Perhaps because she had just experienced something she had never experienced before, Lin Su felt exhausted and quickly fell asleep. She was woken up in a daze to have lunch.
At 2:30 p.m., they walked to the high school.
Senior high school students start school early. When Lin Su and Zhou Yunqi arrived, the senior students were already in class.
They met with the head of academic affairs.
The head of teaching said, "I didn't expect you to be so young. The principal's office has given instructions that you have a relative who was a sent-down youth and has just returned to the city and needs to be transferred here."
Zhou Yunqi said, "It's her, Lin Su."
The head of student affairs glanced at Lin Su, nodded, and asked, "Do you want to study humanities or sciences?"
Lin Su said, "Liberal Arts."
"There are four classes for humanities students. You can choose one."
"Let's go with Class 1."
Because of special instructions, last year the grade office met with the homeroom teacher of Class 1. They didn't assess her grades and just told her to come to school the next day.
On the way back, Lin Su said, "No wonder you told me to tell everyone we're cousins. So that's what you told the boss too?"
Zhou Yunqi didn't want to talk about cousins anymore, so he asked her, "You studied for two years in high school, and the textbooks you used were different from what you have now. Do you want to buy new textbooks?"
Lin Su said, "Now that senior high school students have entered the full review stage, they use textbooks less. They can borrow classmates' books to take a look when needed."
He said, "If it's too much trouble, just buy a new one."
"Well, I'll handle it myself."
He breathed a sigh of relief: "I can only provide you with these hardware facilities. As for your studies, you'll have to rely on yourself."
Lin Su confidently stated, "No problem, I'll give it my all."
Zhou Yunqi laughed: "It's like we're going to war."
"The college entrance examination is like going to war."
It was only a ten-minute walk from the school back to the dormitory gate, but he pulled out his bicycle and said he had to go back to his uncle's house.
Lin Su asked, "Will you be coming back tonight?"
Zhou Yunqi looked at the face that faintly revealed unease and smiled: "You want me to come back?"
Lin Su nodded without hesitation.
"Then I'll go back and bring some personal belongings over."
Lin Su's eyes immediately lit up with a smile: "Okay."
"You go upstairs and rest first. I should be back by evening."
"Um."
When he entered the house that evening, he was carrying a wooden box with his luggage bag draped over it. Lin Su quickly helped him take the luggage bag off.
The box seemed heavy, so he put it in the living room and said, "It's late, I'll cook dinner first."
Lin Su said with a smile, "I've finished cooking the rice, and I've also torn half a cabbage by hand, which I'm about to stir-fry."
Zhou Yunqi took off his coat, revealing a dark sweater, rolled up the sleeves, and asked Lin Su, "Want some hand-shredded cabbage?"
Lin Su said, "Yes, we need to use dried chili peppers to flavor the oil."
"Can you eat spicy food now?" He walked into the kitchen.
"Don't put in too many dried chilies."
Zhou Yunqi was cooking in the kitchen, while Lin Su sat on the sofa, staring at his back in a daze for a while.
Tomorrow she will go to school, and he will go to the airport to take the free flight back to the southwest.
Unfortunately, this was the only time his round-trip airfare was free. If he wanted to fly again, he'd have to pay for it himself; airfare was just too expensive, beyond the reach of most people. So, his next trip back to Beijing would likely be by train, taking eight or nine days each way. Travel was indeed very slow in this era…
During the meal, Lin Su said to him, "How about I take you to the airport tomorrow, and then you can go to school?"
He said, "I have a driver to take you, so it won't be a problem. Your school is the priority."
"Okay." Lin Su bit into a piece of pork rib. "Then will you write me a letter?"
Zhou Yunqi smiled and said, "Write it to me first, and I'll reply."
Lin Su readily agreed.
Letters sent there take more than a week to arrive, and a round trip takes about twenty days. But it's February now, so he can write five or six letters and be back soon.
Slow-moving carriages and horses also have their advantages.
Zhou Yunqi sat opposite her, looking at her young face filled with unease and worry. He calmed himself down and put another piece of pork rib in her bowl.
After dinner, Zhou Yunqi opened the box in the living room.
Lin Su sat on the sofa next to her and curiously peeked into the box.
The room was packed full of things: books, letters, trinkets, photo albums, boxes, and the like—all of them his personal belongings.
Seeing her strong curiosity, Zhou Yunqi smiled and said, "Let me show you my photo album."
The entire photo album documents Zhou Yunqi's growth from childhood to adulthood. There are solo photos as well as group photos with family and friends.
Lin Su said, "Your mother is so beautiful, with a classical and graceful temperament. You look more like your mother, but your nose is like your father's, with a high and straight bridge."
Zhou Yunqi chuckled: "That's what everyone says."
Lin Su pointed to a photo in a magazine showing a young man in a white shirt and red scarf rowing a boat and asked, "How old were you when this photo was taken?"
He came over and glanced at it: "10 years old."
Lin Su chuckled and said, "It's just like the song 'Let Us Row Our Boats' describes."
Zhou Yunqi: "How could it be different? It's in Beihai Park, and the song describes the scenery of Beihai Park."
Lin Su muttered, "I've never been there."
He hesitated, "Don't elementary schools in Beijing usually go boating at Beihai Park for their spring outings? Didn't your school go?"
Lin Su froze, realizing she'd let something slip.
She had no choice but to say, "I misspoke. It should be that I've never rowed a boat before. It seems like my classmate was hogging the oars and wouldn't let anyone else row."
He was slightly speechless: "Want to go boating? That's easy. I'll take you there next time I have time, and you can row to your heart's content."
There was a family photo of the three of them, with a building with carved beams and painted rafters in the background. Lin Su asked, "Where was this taken?"
He answered with three words in a calm tone.
Lin Su exclaimed, her jaw dropping in surprise.
He said casually, "I went with the adults to see the leaders twice, and we took photos together as souvenirs. There weren't so many restrictions on getting in back then, but it's not easy to get in now."
"That's true."
As the album pages turned, the last few pictures showed Zhou Yunqi as he grew up. Lin Su said, "You were already a handsome little boy when you were ten, and by fourteen or fifteen, you had grown into a dashing young man."
He seemed utterly disdainful, letting out a cold sneer.
Lin Su, however, was filled with intense curiosity: "Zhou Yunqi, when you were in high school, were there many girls in your class who liked you? Did they write you love letters or anything?"
Zhou Yunqi immediately denied it: "No."
"It's impossible that there isn't. You're so tall and have such handsome features. People who are good-looking are bound to have many admirers."
He countered, "Do you perhaps possess it?"
Lin Su thought for a moment: "It seems not. I was very introverted back then and didn't play with boys much. There was only one boy in my elementary school class that I was familiar with. We were even deskmates and later went to middle school together. He lived near my house."
A bright gaze swept over her, and Zhou Yunqi asked, "Is it your childhood friend?"
"Sort of. His name is Cheng Zetao."
Before she transmigrated, this childhood friend was still communicating with the original owner of the body, but they gradually lost contact.
Zhou Yunqi glanced at his watch and said, "It's almost time. Go wash up and go to bed."
"I haven't finished reading it yet."
He said, "I'll look at it next time. This album has most of my photos. My uncle's family has a few other family albums. I'll show them to you slowly later."
"Okay." Lin Su reluctantly closed the photo album, watching him lock the box, then carry it into the bedroom and put it in a corner.
The next day, after breakfast, Lin Su went to school with her usual canvas schoolbag slung over her shoulder.
Zhou Yunqi walked her to the school gate and said as they parted, "Did you remember everything I told you to do last night?"
“I’ve remembered it clearly; you’ve written it all down in your notebook.”
He sighed, "I'm afraid you'll forget. If anything happens, just call my uncle for help. I've mentioned you to him, and he won't ignore it."
"knew."
He glanced around the campus and urged, "Hurry up and go in, don't be late."
It was breakfast time after morning reading, and all around were senior high school students hurrying by.
Lin Su walked into the school gate, took a few steps, then looked back and saw that tall figure still standing in the same spot. In the crowded throng, the man's handsome and refined features always stood out, instantly capturing her attention.
The man nodded heavily at her, then turned and left. His somewhat lonely figure disappeared into the early spring morning.
Lin Su turned around and walked towards the teaching building.
From today onwards, she is Lin Su, a senior high school student.
