Chapter 38 They caught up
Chapter Thirty-Eight: They Chased After Us
Lin Su lay on her side, with Zhou Yunqi's body behind her.
Even without being close, just a short distance away, I could feel how hot his body was, as if heat was emanating from him.
Sigh, I'm still such a coward.
She had been talking about wanting his body when others asked her that morning, but now that they were actually close and lying in the same bed, she was too timid to do anything but turn her back to him.
Zhou Yunqi turned his head to look at her slender neck and sighed inwardly.
When he's playing around, he doesn't care about the consequences, but once he gets serious, she gets scared like a rabbit and doesn't dare to breathe.
"Wouldn't this be considered outwardly fierce but inwardly weak?" he asked.
Lin Su remained silent.
"Asleep?"
Her faint breaths were his only response.
Perhaps because she had been running around outside all day, she was indeed a little tired. The indoor air was humid and cool, and before she knew it, Lin Su fell asleep.
I slept until night fell.
The living room lights were off; only various sounds were coming from the kitchen.
When Lin Su woke up, she found a pillowcase covering her stomach; it was from her bedroom.
During dinner, Lin Su asked him, "You didn't sleep afterwards?"
He hesitated for a moment, then finally said, "You've taken over the bed, how am I supposed to sleep?"
Lin Su swallowed her rice: "I don't know how I fell asleep, maybe I was too tired."
After she finished eating, she washed the dishes, took the trash can downstairs to take out the trash, and then left the trash can at the bottom of the stairs before going outside for a walk.
When she came back, a neighbor who knew her was coming upstairs with her and made small talk, saying, "Xiaolin, you've finished your exams?"
"Yes, Auntie."
"That's great, we're liberated."
"Um."
How did the exam go?
"I don't feel anything."
"No feeling is the best."
He opened the door and came inside, asking, "Why did you take so long?"
"I took a walk on the street to digest my food. The wind on the street was hot." She walked over to the ice and looked at it. It had all melted into a puddle of water, but it was still cool indoors.
Zhou Yunqi said, "They delivered the ice too early today. It would be better to have them deliver it at 5 p.m. tomorrow."
Lin Su asked in confusion, "Does the ice cost money?"
"Of course, ice factories aren't charities."
Lin Su continued curiously, "Do they sell to individuals as well?"
Zhou Yunqi said, "Of course I don't sell to individuals, but I don't order in my own name either."
Well, anyway, he has plenty of connections.
Lin Su sleeps too late during the day and falls asleep very late at night.
Perhaps because the room was relatively cool, Zhou Yunqi seemed to fall asleep as soon as he lay down. When Lin Su went to the bathroom, she found him sleeping peacefully without making a sound.
Lin Su took a deep breath, thinking that she should restrain herself, otherwise she might embarrass him.
...
The following day, the school organized score estimation and formal application for university admission.
Zhou Yunqi asked if she wanted to go with him, but Lin Su said no.
He laughed and said, "That's true. I couldn't help you in the past. Just fill in the form according to your situation."
Some subjects were estimated on the day of the exam. When Lin Su filled out her college application, she filled it out according to her previous plan. Her first choice was "National Economic Management" at Peking University. She also filled in some other majors and schools afterward.
When he returned and told Zhou Yunqi, he said, "If you get accepted into a top university, I'll buy you whatever you want."
Lin Su laughed and said, "What if I get rejected?"
He clicked his tongue: "Can't you say something nice?"
Lin Su then changed her mind: "I don't really want anything in particular. I'll tell you when I think of something."
They lived peacefully for a few days. Zhou Yunqi was also very busy, so he would leave after breakfast and not return until evening. Lin Su followed his instructions, spending her mornings wandering around or reading at the library, and her afternoons at home receiving ice delivered to her.
After delivering the ice, the two workers took back the two styrofoam boxes from yesterday.
Lin Su asked a few more questions and learned that their ice was usually supplied to fresh food warehouses, and she didn't know how Zhou Yunqi found the connection.
After several days of sweltering heat, a torrential downpour struck that afternoon.
Lin Su brought the clothes outside the window in to check if they were wet from the rain, and that's how she brazenly saw his underwear.
Their evening routine was like this: Lin Su would usually take a shower first, then wash her clothes and hang them to dry before returning to her room. She would generally not go out again, except perhaps to get a drink of water, leaving Zhou Yunqi to shower and do his laundry by himself. Therefore, they never felt awkward with each other.
But now, Lin Su sat on the edge of his bed, holding up a clothes hanger and staring at the crotch of the black underwear.
It's like it's gotten used to being stretched out, and it's formed a certain shape.
The arched silhouette is so... big...
Lin Su's eyes widened, her face slightly flushed. She covered her face and let out two more cries.
It was at this moment that the man opened the door and walked in, holding a letter in his hand. He patted the raindrops off his clothes and said, "You've gotten me soaked."
Startled, Lin Su stuffed the underwear between his clothes and pants and placed it on the bed.
She looked at him awkwardly again.
But her gaze involuntarily drifted to a certain part of his body.
For a moment, he looked over in confusion.
"I've already taken your clothes in," she said awkwardly.
Then she carried her clothes back into the room.
Zhou Yunqi blew on the electric fan, and Lin Su composed herself before coming out.
“Your letter,” he said. “It’s from Jinshi.”
Lin Su: "Oh."
It was sent by my maternal grandfather.
In the six months after Lin Su returned to the city, she maintained correspondence with both her grandfather's and maternal grandfather's families.
My grandfather's family lived in a county in a province in central China, which was too far away. My maternal grandfather's family lived in Tianjin, which was not far from Beijing. Previously, the original owner would visit my maternal grandparents in Tianjin every year.
Now, after opening and reading the letter, he frowned.
Zhou Yunqi asked, "What's wrong?"
My grandfather asked me to stay in Jinshi for a few days.
Zhou Yunqi: "A few days?"
"It usually takes a week."
When are you going?
"My uncle will come over on a business trip next Wednesday and go back on Thursday. He said he'll take me with him."
He nodded: "Then let's go."
Lin Su nodded.
Jinshi isn't far, and she really needs to visit the old man.
Zhou Yunqi then asked, "Does your maternal grandfather live with your uncle?"
"No, they live separately. My maternal grandfather's family also lives in a hutong. Their house is quite spacious, and I have a room."
He smiled and said, "That's good. It's cool in the alley."
Lin Su said, "It is quite cool. There are two big locust trees near my grandfather's house."
As we were talking, there was a rapid knocking on the door.
Lin Su thought it was the ice delivery workers, but then wondered, "Isn't it only a little past three o'clock?"
Upon opening the door, Xu Yaodong's bright smiling face appeared before me.
"Brother Dong!"
"Xiao Lin, hehe."
When did you get back?
"Yesterday, I was so numb from sitting on the train that I felt numb."
Xu Yaodong, also soaked from the rain, walked in and called out, "Boss."
Zhou Yunqi asked, "Have you finished with what I told you?"
"It was a complete success. Otherwise, I wouldn't have dared to come back. Their people came to inspect the goods and were very picky, saying that the sweetness wasn't enough. Luckily, the old factory manager was there and helped to handle it."
He saw the eldest brother sitting on a small bed and said with a smile, "Eldest brother, you're sleeping in this bed?"
Zhou Yunqi glanced at him: "Otherwise what?"
Xu Yaodong said, "That's still better than mine."
Lin Su said thoughtfully, "Yeah, where would you sleep if you went home?"
“Sleeping in the alley, every household likes to bring out their bamboo beds to lie down at night. As long as it doesn’t rain, it’s much cooler than inside the house.”
Lin Su: "That's true."
As soon as Xu Yaodong arrived, the room became quite noisy. He could single-handedly put on a whole party. After the ice was delivered, he even said, "I want to stay here forever."
Zhou Yunqi bluntly said, "Go back after dinner. There's no bed for you here."
"There's a sofa. I can sleep on the floor if I want."
Zhou Yunqi was too lazy to say anything more.
Xu Yaodong didn't actually stay either.
In the following days, Xu Yaodong would come over from time to time. Sometimes he would go with Zhou Yunqi to do errands, and sometimes when he had nothing to do, he would teach Lin Su how to play Dou Dizhu (a card game).
On the day Lin Su's uncle came to Beijing on a business trip, Zhou Yunqi went out. When Xu Yaodong came over, Lin Su couldn't help but ask in surprise, "You didn't go out with him?"
"No, he's probably busy with personal matters."
After sitting and chatting for a while, someone downstairs called her name.
Zhang Wenqiu called out from downstairs, "Lin Su, do you want to go back to school?"
Lin Su: "Why go back to school?"
"Just browsing around, maybe see if there's any mail or anything."
Xu Yaodong also curiously peered through the window and said with a smile, "Mind if you give me a ride?"
Since they had nothing better to do, Lin Su led Xu Yaodong to Zhang Wenqiu and introduced him, saying, "This is Xu Yaodong, a former educated youth from the same farm as me."
A male educated youth… Zhang Wenqiu suddenly remembered that she said she had someone she liked on the day she admired the lotus flowers, and that he was an educated youth. Could it be him?
She looked at Xu Yaodong in surprise and scrutinized him carefully.
Lin Su didn't know why she was looking at Xu Yaodong so closely, and just felt a little strange.
The three of them joked and laughed all the way to the school's mailroom, only to find that Lin Su had left a letter there, sent to her by a former educated youth.
Zhang Wenqiu originally wanted to ask Lin Su about it, but she couldn't find an opportunity. Xu Yaodong seemed to be very close to her, always by her side, and even pulled her arm to get a soda...
She couldn't help but sigh, feeling frustrated as if she had chosen the wrong side.
She always felt that Lin Su was a better match for the man who picked her up after the college entrance exam; he was so handsome.
Lin Su was unaware that Zhang Wenqiu had made a mistake, let alone the chain reaction this blunder would cause. The next day, she packed a bag and went to her uncle's workplace where he was on a business trip, and then took the train back to Jinshi with him.
Her maternal grandparents treated her very well. After all, their only daughter had passed away due to illness, leaving behind a granddaughter. The granddaughter was so beautiful and had excellent grades, so the elderly couple had no reason not to love her.
Lin Su stayed at her maternal grandmother's house and enjoyed a few peaceful days. Two large locust trees in front of the house provided ample shade, their branches stretching over the rooftops of a nearby area. She liked to sit on a recliner under the trees, eating watermelon and spitting out the seeds to tease the cat.
Here, she seemed to clear away all the lewd thoughts in her head and forget about Zhou Yunqi.
Little did she know that on the fifth day after she left, the man took a train and arrived in Jinshi in the evening.
When he found the big locust tree at the address on the letter, Lin Su was sitting under it enjoying the cool shade, fanning herself with a palm leaf fan and listening to everyone chatting.
Looking up, she saw a familiar figure walking towards her, and Lin Su was startled: "Zhou Yunqi?"
The man's face was ashen, and his eyes were as deep and unfathomable as a bottomless valley at night.
This made Lin Su feel uneasy.
