Chen Suwen and Ye Yulian exchanged a glance, then stood up together and quickly headed towards the Sun family's house.
The Sun family lived right next to Ye Yulian's family; the two households were separated by only one house, so they quickly arrived at the noisy place.
The Sun family's wall was similar to Chen Suwen's, with a fence about 1.1 or 1.2 meters high, so anything happening inside the yard could be clearly seen from the outside.
The woman talking to Zhang Hongxue was a woman who looked to be in her thirties or forties. Ye Yulian recognized her at a glance; she was Zhang Hongxue's sister-in-law.
"She's Ah Qiang's mother's sister-in-law. Is she arguing with Ah Qiang's mother because of this temporary job?"
Chen Suwen watched the lively scene at the Sun family's house with great interest.
He Caiying just went to the supply and marketing cooperative, so now only Zhang Hongxue and her sister-in-law from her maternal family are at the Sun family's house.
Zhang Hongxue's husband, Sun Tong, and her father-in-law both have jobs, and since it's not a holiday time, there's no one at home.
Zhang Hongxue's children weren't home either; they were all out playing.
So she was left to face the wrath of her sister-in-law, who harbored deep resentment towards her.
“Back then, you had such a good job, and you just gave it to Sun Tong without any consideration for your family.”
"Your parents have been so good to you, giving you all the good things since you were little. Don't you know how to repay them?"
Zhang Hongxue wasn't stupid either.
Although she was raised to be somewhat naive by her family and pampered by her in-laws, she is not really that stupid or foolish.
Perhaps she didn't understand when she was little, or perhaps she didn't fully understand when she first started dating Sun Tong or when she first got married.
But how could she not understand now?
Her family doted on her, partly because she was their biological daughter, but mostly because she was lucky; being good to her brought them benefits.
Look at her older brother. His grades weren't great when he was in school, but he always managed to get into school by the skin of his teeth, and he also barely made it into university.
Is it because he works hard?
No, it's because he's Zhang Hongxue's older brother, and he got into the exam last thanks to Zhang Hongxue's good luck.
And her second brother, her eldest sister...
Her family members benefited greatly from her good fortune, while those who treated her badly gained nothing.
So why are her family members so good to her?
Isn't it because being good to her is beneficial?
Sun Tong and the Sun family are similar; they treat her well because it benefits them, otherwise...
Zhang Hongxue couldn't help but sneer, recalling how Sun Tong had always made excuses about being too busy and tired whenever he came back over the past few years, avoiding any closeness with her.
"Sister-in-law, this job is mine. Why should I leave it to Xiaodie?"
"Besides, how old is Xiaodie? She's only sixteen. You're telling me to give her my job and stop her from going to high school?"
“I know who gave birth to me and who raised me, but what does that have to do with you, sister-in-law?”
"It's not like you, sister-in-law, gave birth to me and raised me. Isn't it a bit too much for you to ask me for things so brazenly?"
"How can this not be my business?" Zhang's eldest sister-in-law slammed her hand on the table and stood up. "How can this not be my business?"
"How old were you when I married your older brother? I practically raised you. Your older brother was able to earn money so you could live a good life, and now you've forgotten your roots?"
"Zhang Hongxue, do you really want to be that kind of ungrateful wretch?"
There is an age difference between Zhang's eldest brother and Zhang Hongxue; Zhang Hongxue is ten years older than her eldest brother's niece, Xiaodie.
Zhang Xiaodie was not the eldest child of Zhang's eldest brother, so there was a significant age difference between Zhang Hongxue and her eldest brother.
She was only a few years old when her older brother got married. Her sister-in-law, who had just gotten married, didn't have a job, so she would lend a hand to take care of Zhang Hongxue from time to time.
Now she can face Zhang Hongxue with a clear conscience, after all, she practically raised Zhang Hongxue, and she doesn't feel ashamed at all about asking for some benefits.
“Ah Qiang’s mother, your sister-in-law is right. She raised you, so it’s not unreasonable for her to ask for some benefits.”
"Besides, your niece is about to graduate from junior high school, right? If she doesn't have a job, she'll have to go to the countryside."
Chen Suwen reminded Zhang Hongxue with a smile.
She just loves to watch the drama unfold.
She didn't have any ill feelings towards Zhang Hongxue, but He Caiying had just come up to her and said how good she was to her daughter-in-law, implying that she was a bad mother-in-law, so she decided to sow discord between the Sun family's mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.
She knew very well that He Caiying was also eyeing this temporary job, but she hadn't decided who to give it to yet.
But it definitely wasn't her daughter, Sun Qingguo; it was definitely a choice made between her second and third sons.
If the Zhang family were to compete with He Caiying for this job, wouldn't that be quite a spectacle?
“That’s right, Hongxue, you’re Xiaodie’s aunt. You can’t just watch her go to the countryside to work, can you?” Zhang’s sister-in-law quickly complained to Zhang Hongxue when she heard that someone agreed with her.
"Xiaodie is physically weak and not cut out for farm work. What will happen if she goes to the countryside to work as an educated youth?"
"Haven't you heard? So-and-so's daughter died when she was sent to the countryside to work."
“Xiaodie is so frail. Your older brother and I have never been willing to let her suffer. Are you willing to let her go to the countryside to work as an educated youth?”
Zhang's eldest sister-in-law not only said that her daughter's health was too weak to go to the countryside, but also that she and her husband's income was so meager that it was too difficult to make a living.
He also talked about how he had elderly relatives to support, making himself sound incredibly pitiful, in any way he could evoke Zhang Hongxue's compassion.
Chen Suwen pulled out a handful of melon seeds at some point and shared some with Ye Yulian next to her. The two of them ate melon seeds while watching the show.
