Chapter 14 Planting Fruit Trees

"You two, help me dig a hole."

Chen Suwen did not ask the two children to leave, but instead handed them small shovels and hoes, asking them to help dig the hole.

The saplings don't need to be planted in very deep holes; two five-year-old children can easily dig them out.

"Wow!"

Two five-year-old children are at a lively and active age, and they also crave the approval of adults.

When adults ask them to dig holes and plant trees, they get very excited and never refuse.

Chen Suwen specified the locations to prevent his grandchildren from not knowing how much space to leave between the saplings, so he first designated the locations himself and then had them dig the holes.

While the two little kids were digging holes with their bottoms sticking out, Chen Suwen was secretly pouring wood-type energy into the saplings.

Instead of directly forcing them to grow quickly, she quietly altered their genes first.

It can prevent plants from getting sick or damaged, and it can also take root quickly and grow rapidly after transplanting, instead of withering after only a few days.

Chen Suwen once had this kind of trouble.

Before she awakened her wood-type ability, she wasn't exactly a case of everything she planted dying, but she was pretty much in a similar situation.

The vegetables she grows are doing alright, but not many of the flowers she grows are thriving.

She couldn't even grow simple impatiens well, and her rain lilies only grew very lush leaves, with hardly any flowers blooming.

She also once bought blueberry seedlings, but after only a few days of planting, even though they had all sprouted, they all withered and died in less than three days.

Therefore, before the apocalypse, Chen Suwen's crops were mediocre. Fortunately, after she awakened her wood-type ability, she worked hard to increase her level.

Healing abilities are her primary focus for leveling up, followed by wood-based abilities, and finally fire-based abilities.

"Grandma, I've finished digging."

Looking at the pit she had dug, Zhou Mei excitedly shouted to Chen Suwen.

"Grandma, I'm done too." Zhou Xian said defiantly, holding up his small shovel so that his grandma could come and see the hole he had dug.

"Hmph, the hole I dug is the best, so the fruit I grow will definitely be the best-tasting." Zhou Mei snorted at her twin brother.

"The hole I dug is the best. Look how deep it is! The fruit I grow there will definitely taste better than yours."

"No way! Mine is the best!"

The brother and sister were arguing and Chen Suwen was too lazy to care about their quarrel, so she told them to hurry up and dig more holes.

She placed the fruit tree sapling in the pit and covered it with soil, then encouraged its growth so that it would quickly take root in the ground, as if it had always been there.

She didn't apply any base fertilizer when planting the fruit seedlings, and there wasn't much fertilizer at home. As for manure, there was none available at home.

Fresh manure cannot be used directly as fertilizer, so fertilize them after the saplings have grown to a certain size.

The two little ones dug holes, and Chen Suwen planted the saplings. In a short time, all the saplings were planted.

Huang Xiaomei didn't give Chen Suwen an even distribution of saplings. There were two mango saplings, two longan saplings, three lychee saplings, but a lot of guava saplings, five in total.

Chen Suwen also discovered a lemon tree sapling among these saplings.

Perhaps the little girl can't distinguish between lemon, orange, and grapefruit saplings, since the leaves of these fruits all look quite similar.

Chen Suwen recognized it as a lemon sapling. Although she was a little disappointed that it wasn't an orange or a grapefruit, lemons were still quite nice.

Although lemons are very sour when eaten raw, they are great for making cold dishes or drinks.

Chen Suwen didn't plant all the fruit tree seedlings—lychee, longan, mango, and guava—she only planted one.

Choose the one that grows the best and has the best genes and plant it; bury the others next to it as fertilizer.

The main problem is that her backyard doesn't have enough space for her to plant so many fruit tree seedlings. If she planted all of them, she wouldn't be able to plant anything else.

She plans to look for other things to grow in the future, such as watermelons, grapes, blueberries, oranges, dragon fruit, and other fruits.

"Grandma, when can we have fruit to eat?" Zhou Mei walked up to her grandmother, carrying a small hoe, and looked up at her to ask.

Chen Suwen looked down at her and said, "When you're in second grade."

"Second grade?" The little girl looked down and stretched out her small hand, which wasn't holding the hoe, to count, but she still couldn't figure out when she started second grade.

"Anyway, you definitely won't be able to eat them now." Chen Suwen clapped her hands. "Alright, the saplings have all been planted, it's time to go back and eat."

"Uh-huh."

It's okay if they can't get fruit now; it won't stop them from eating.

Chen Suwen took the two little children back to the front yard and planted ferns next to the tap.

The water tap in her house is in the corner, near the kitchen. This area is frequently used, so the ground is often damp.

Therefore, taro and sweet potatoes are grown here. The sweet potatoes next to the tap don't grow very well, but their leaves are particularly lush and tender.

Chen Suwen planted the bracken roots next to the tap, where water would flow frequently, so she didn't have to worry about the bracken not growing well due to lack of water.

"Mom, what are you planting? Is this... bracken?" Xu Huixue came out after cooking and was surprised to see her mother-in-law planting vegetables next to the tap.

Can bracken fern be grown?

Do we still need to grow bracken?

Isn't this kind of bracken fern something you can see along any riverbank?

Is there any need to grow this bracken?

"What business is it of yours what I plant?" Chen Suwen covered the soil with soil, and while turning on the tap to absorb the water, she told her daughter-in-law not to meddle.
