This year's Lunar New Year's Eve was more lively and joyous than in previous years for the Yan family.
The reason, of course, is that there are more people in the family now, and most importantly, among these new people is Zizai, this lively and mischievous little guy.
With Chen Jing, the super chef, around, the Yan family's other chefs were completely useless today. Chen Jing got up early in the morning and started preparing for the reunion dinner. Zhu Qianying stopped working and instead helped Chen Jing in the kitchen.
Yesterday, the little guy heard Uncle Hai say that all the new flowerpots or vases for the New Year's flowers and tangerines in the house should be covered with auspicious red stickers with phrases like "May flowers bloom and bring wealth" or "May you have great fortune and prosperity." He patted his chest and volunteered to take on the task himself.
Seeing the little guy so enthusiastic, Yan Bobo and his wife, along with their young master, who had never participated in such small matters before, rolled up their sleeves and helped after finishing their breakfast.
So, the servants didn't have to bother with these small things, and everyone went off to do a thorough cleaning. The whole family, except for Xingxing, the dog who could now openly enter the house and leisurely follow the little guy wagging its tail and acting silly, were all busy and very diligent.
"Grandma, what kind of flower is this?"
While busy, the little guy still humbly sought advice.
Old Madam Yan quickly turned to Yan Bo for help. You see, the Yan family had never put so much effort into celebrating the Spring Festival in decades, so Old Madam Yan didn't know what this flower was.
“This is a hanging bell…” Yan Bo quickly replied.
The little guy nodded "Oh," then pointed to a pot of very beautiful, purplish-red flowers that looked like butterflies and said proudly, "I know this one, it's a Phalaenopsis orchid!"
"Impressive!" Yan Bo nodded in approval.
Young Master Yan helped spread the paste, then suddenly remembered something and asked the little guy, "Sweetie, after we finish our New Year's Eve dinner, shall we go to the garden to set off firecrackers and fireworks?"
Upon hearing this, the little one immediately turned around, his eyes wide with excitement, and asked, "Is it okay?"
Seeing his expression, Yan Shao knew he had made the right bet again. "Sure! Darling, would you like to set off firecrackers or fireworks?"
The little guy tilted his head and thought about it seriously for a moment, then cautiously glanced at Yan Bo and his wife, and then looked at Yan Shao, "Could we... put both of them?"
Young Master Yan certainly wouldn't refuse, but he also wouldn't let go of this good opportunity to seek benefits!
So, he frowned in distress, and seeing the little guy's face start to tense up, he slowly said, "It's not impossible... just give Daddy a kiss, baby..."
The little guy's face immediately brightened. Without even thinking, he put down the bright red sticker in his hand, ran up to Yan Shao, and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.
Not satisfied with this, Young Master Yan pointed to his pouting lips. Without the slightest hesitation, the little guy stood on tiptoe, pouting as he kissed Young Master Yan's lips like a kissing fish.
Young Master Yan was overjoyed and no longer cared about anything. He picked up the little guy around the waist and spun him around.
The little guy clearly loved this exciting game. After spinning around once, he started giggling. Later, he even automatically wrapped one arm around Yan Shao's neck and opened the other, enjoying the pleasure that the spinning brought him.
The father and son wandered around the living room like idiots for who knows how many times, until the little guy yelled, "So dizzy...so dizzy..."
Young Master Yan finally stopped, picked up the little guy, and slumped onto the sofa. Both of them were dizzy, but they huddled together, rubbing against each other and giggling foolishly.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Yan, who was standing to the side, took out her phone at some point and secretly filmed the loving interaction between the father and son. As she filmed the two of them snuggling together on the sofa, Mrs. Yan's eyes unconsciously welled up with tears.
Yanbo heard his wife sniffling heavily, knowing she was moved by the scene before her. He silently took a tissue and wiped her eyes.
The father and son rested on the sofa for a while before finally recovering from their dizziness.
Yan Shao recovered a little earlier than the little guy, but since the little guy was unusually docile and nestled in his arms when he was awake, he pretended to be unconscious and continued to laze on the sofa.
After catching his breath, the little guy saw Young Master Yan's smiling face clearly. He probably only just realized what was happening and was slightly stunned. Then, as if nothing had happened, he crawled out of his arms, jumped to the ground with a "thump," and ran barefoot towards Yan Bo like the wind.
"Grandpa, I want to put some red envelopes in the bag..."
In addition to sticking red stickers with auspicious words into the flowerpots and vases, the New Year flowers and tangerines also need to be decorated with red envelopes. Although these red envelopes look the same as the red envelopes that the little ones receive, the amount of money inside is much less.
Most of the time, this kind of red envelope contains one or two one-yuan bills or one or two one-yuan coins. Then, it is tied with a small string and hung on the New Year's flowers and tangerines. Generally speaking, only one envelope is needed for small potted flowers.
Larger items like peach blossoms and kumquats can be hung according to personal preference and auspicious numbers, such as "6", "8", "12", and "18", which are popular choices due to their auspicious homophones.
"Go to Grandpa Hai's place and get some red envelopes and coins..." Yan Bo instructed, patting the little guy's head.
A moment later, a little guy appeared out of nowhere, holding a basin in his hands. In the basin were several bundles of red envelopes and half a basin of coins.
"Ouch, I'm exhausted!"
The basin of coins must have been really heavy, because the little guy ran to the middle of the living room and couldn't hold it in any longer. He plopped down on the carpet, panting and swinging his little arms.
When Yan Bo and his wife, along with Young Master Yan, saw this scene, they couldn't help but burst into laughter.
The little guy wasn't annoyed by everyone's laughter. He simply leaned back and lay on the carpet in a starfish position. When Xingxing saw this, she squatted down next to the little guy and stayed quietly in a guarding posture.
Young Master Yan glanced at his son a few times, then turned and ordered people to go out and prepare firecrackers and fireworks.
The little guy recovered his strength very quickly. After lying on the carpet for about ten seconds, he sprang up with a somersault. Now, he was too lazy to move and sat cross-legged on the carpet, starting to stuff coins into the red envelopes.
He followed Uncle Hai's instructions and put two coins into each red envelope. As the coins in the basin gradually shrank, the red envelopes piled up around him became a small mountain.
As he was wrapping the envelope, the little guy got playful and stuffed ten coins into it, then handed it to Xingxing.
"Star, this is a red envelope for you!"
