Chapter 208 Human Heart

The thin man didn't notice Nangong Wenyao.

As he moved things, he secretly glanced at the valley entrance.

Seeing Nangong Wenyao suddenly stop, Gan Wei asked in confusion, "What's wrong?"

Nangong Wenyao pointed at the thin man and said softly, "Sister Wei, there's something wrong with this man. He seems suspicious."

She couldn't say she could read a person's mind; that was all she could say.

Gan Wei was taken aback and stared intently at the thin man not far away.

But.

Aside from the fact that he does look around...

I really can't see anything wrong with him.

We can't assume there's something wrong with him just because he glanced at his surroundings a few times, can we?

However, Nangong Wenyao is now the leader's third woman and is also the Minister of Engineering, holding a very high position in the base.

Since she said this person had a problem, Gan Wei had to react.

Gan Wei drew her pistol, strode over to the thin man, pointed it at him, and shouted sternly, "Hands up!"

The thin man was startled and quickly released the heavy object in his hand, raising his hand pitifully and saying, "Sir, what's wrong? I really didn't do anything against the base rules."

He almost thought he had been exposed.

But as his mind raced, he realized he hadn't given himself away at all.

The other survivors who were also carrying the heavy objects nearby could only let go and watch Gan Wei cautiously.

One of the women, who was quite familiar with Gan Wei, cautiously asked, "Captain Gan, is there something you need?"

Having no evidence whatsoever, Gan Wei could only vaguely reply, "You all go about your business. I'm taking this person to investigate."

The woman nodded and shouted to the others, "Let's go! Stop spacing out!"

Seeing that the group was about to leave, the skinny man couldn't help but shout, "Don't go! I've been helping you move things every day for the past few days. You all know what kind of person I am. Please put in a good word for me. You can't bully a newbie like me just because I've only been in the base for a few days!"

Another young man frowned, somewhat angrily saying, "Zhang Ping, don't talk nonsense! Captain Gan is such a good person, how could he bully anyone? Just cooperate with the investigation!"

The woman who had spoken earlier said angrily, "Zhang Ping, if you dare to speak ill of Captain Gan, we will never let you off the hook!"

The others also looked at Zhang Ping with dissatisfaction.

Zhang Ping was dumbfounded. What the hell was this base? Why did the survivors trust the sheriff so much?

Shouldn't everyone be afraid of or hate sheriffs?

His mind raced again, and Zhang Ping said loudly with righteous indignation, "Sir, I really didn't do anything! Since joining our base, I've been working hard every day for the betterment of our base. Why don't you give me some evidence? You can't just take me away for investigation without any reason, can you?"

"You can't say I have a problem just because I'm new and take me in for a separate investigation. How am I supposed to know if you don't like me and want to punish me? Is it because I glanced at you a few more times? But that's just because you're really good-looking!"

Zhang Ping racked his brains and tried every trick in the book to argue his point.

Seeing several people who had joined the base around the same time as him come over to watch, Zhang Ping raised his voice even louder.

He declared confidently, "Sir, although I just joined the base, I truly love it. I memorize the base rules every day! I work 12 hours a day! My hands and feet ache from exhaustion, but I only feel at peace because I'm contributing to our base!"

Changing the subject, Zhang Ping said with an unusually aggrieved tone, "But now you're investigating me without producing any evidence. How am I supposed to know what you're doing behind my back? In this apocalypse, is there anyone who never makes a mistake? When I first joined the base, didn't you say you wouldn't hold past mistakes against me?"

Gan Wei was somewhat taken aback by Zhang Ping's string of words.

She indeed had no evidence.

Seeing some of the new survivors who had joined the base looking at her with strange eyes, Gan Wei was even more at a loss for how to respond.

There was a stalemate for a moment.

Knowing her friend's character, Nangong Wenyao didn't make things difficult for her.

Instead, he walked to Gan Wei's side and said gently, "Zhang Ping, I think you have a problem. We will investigate what happened. If you have any objections, you can scold me."

Zhang Ping glanced at Nangong Wenyao, then quickly looked away, shouting, "I know you're the leader's woman, but even if you are, you need to provide evidence! How am I supposed to know how you'll resort to torture... ah!"

Before he could finish speaking, a man next to him suddenly kicked Zhang Ping hard, cursing, "Fuck your mother! Just cooperate with the investigation! You dare to speak ill of Minister Nangong! Who do you think you are? Someone Captain Gan and Minister Nangong would use their power to punish you?!"

After saying that, the man was still not satisfied and kicked Zhang Ping several more times.

The man's words resonated with the others, who all looked at Zhang Ping with disdain.

"Exactly! I bet he's just feeling guilty!"

"That woman who speaks ill of the leader deserves to die!"

"Take him away directly and use torture to extract a confession! I studied psychology before, and Zhang Ping's micro-expressions are clearly hiding something!"

"......"

Hearing what the onlookers were saying, Zhang Ping was completely dumbfounded.

The physical pain was nothing; what hurt me most was the emotional pain.

What exactly is going on with this base?

These bases are only good for hard labor, shouldn't they all support us?

Why are they all praising the higher-ups instead?

That's weird!
