A large underground parking lot.
Two underground floors.
Dai Chenglin and his men are hiding here.
There were fewer than 300 of them in total. Apart from a few dozen men who looked somewhat muscular, most of the rest were sallow-faced and haggard, their eyes revealing the fear and vigilance of someone who had been struggling to survive in the apocalypse for a long time.
Although Ning Chuxia had visited and told them that an army would be coming to recapture Tongcheng.
But they were still somewhat skeptical.
After all, Copper City had a population of over one million before the apocalypse!
And how could humanity possibly retain an army capable of fighting over a million zombies amidst such a catastrophe?
Dai Chenglin and several trusted confidants were taking small puffs of cigarettes to the side.
So much time has passed since the disaster, cigarettes and alcohol have become rare commodities in Tongcheng.
Therefore, they smoked each puff very carefully and very slowly.
One of the burly men gently held the half-burnt cigarette between his thick, calloused fingers, as if he were holding the most precious gift in the world.
He squinted slightly, and each time he brought the cigarette to his lips, he touched it with extreme care, afraid of using too much force and causing even a single wisp of tobacco to fall out.
With extreme reluctance, he slowly exhaled wisps of smoke from his nostrils before casually asking, "Boss Dai, do you think what that beautiful woman said was true or false?"
Dai Chenglin shrugged and said, "How should I know? Anyway, let's just hide for now, there's no harm in it."
Another confidant scratched his messy hair and sighed, "I still don't believe that there can be such a powerful army outside. Before the apocalypse, our Copper City had more than a million permanent residents. This is more than a million zombies. We deal with zombies all the time, so we know how terrifying these things are."
"Yes, the zombies are getting stronger and stronger, while the number of humans is getting smaller and smaller. Think about it, a year ago, there were at least 10,000 or 20,000 survivors in our Copper City, right? And now? It would be good if we could gather 3,000 people. Even if the survivors outside are lucky enough to hide, where are they going to get equipment? Our country is not like America, where there are guns everywhere."
Dai Chenglin took a deep breath, looked at the rising wisps of smoke, and calmly said, "I say you're all meddling in other people's business. Why do you care so much? It's better if it's there, but if it's not, at worst it'll be like before. The worst that can happen is that we die. What's there to be afraid of?"
Suddenly, Dai Chenglin froze.
Staring blankly at the top.
"What's wrong, Boss Dai?" someone asked in a low voice.
Dai Chenglin frowned and asked, "Did you hear an explosion?"
Everyone was stunned and looked at each other in bewilderment.
At that moment, another evolved being said, "I think I heard that too."
Dai Chenglin didn't speak again, but listened attentively.
Soon, the sound of cannon fire grew closer.
Moreover, there were quite a few of them, and Dai Chenglin and the other evolved beings all looked at each other with surprise and delight.
They're absolutely certain!
And the sound of artillery shells was getting closer and closer!
Could it be that someone has already broken in?
After all, this is a city!
Not the suburbs!
After a while, a deafening roar of cannons suddenly erupted outside. The sound was like rolling thunder, wave after wave, assaulting Dai Chenglin and his men's eardrums.
Then came countless gunshots, crackling and popping like a dense barrage of firecrackers, continuous and endless.
This huge commotion greatly boosted the morale of Dai Chenglin and others.
By this time, everyone had heard the commotion.
The army is here!
The army has really arrived!!
Everyone in the underground parking garage was staring blankly at the top.
Their eyes have never been so full of hope!
Soon, they were no longer as lifeless as before, but started discussing excitedly.
"With this commotion, how many soldiers must there be?! I'd estimate at least several thousand!"
"Several thousand? I think it's more than that! Before the apocalypse, our Copper City had over a million people, which is also over a million zombies. Without at least ten thousand people, how dare you come to retake Copper City?!"
"Tens of thousands of people?! Where did they get their equipment? Didn't the radio reports say the army had collapsed?"
"I wonder what the outside world is like now. We've been trapped in Copper City for too long."
"I'm so excited! I'd do anything to get rescued! These days of living in fear are unbearable!"
Gunfire could be heard overhead.
I don't know how much time passed, but the sounds of gunfire gradually faded away, until they became weaker and weaker, and finally almost inaudible.
Those who were hiding here looked at each other in bewilderment.
"Boss Dai, did the army get driven away, or did the zombies get driven away?"
"Damn it, you're asking me?! Who am I supposed to ask?!"
"How about we go up and take a look?"
These words silenced everyone.
They looked at each other, their eyes filled with hesitation and unease.
Did the army win or retreat?
Dai Chenglin frowned, took a deep drag on his extinguished cigarette, gritted his teeth, and muttered, "Damn it, staying here is too agonizing. Rather than wasting time here, I might as well go up and take a look!"
"The boss is right! Let's go take a look!"
Although everyone was a little apprehensive, they all responded enthusiastically.
They then picked up their weapons and equipment.
There were no guns, only homemade spears, rusty axes, and other such items.
