Li Guofeng nodded, took out a well-maintained military walkie-talkie, and shouted loudly, "This is Captain Li Guofeng, the company commander of the 7th Reconnaissance Company! Number LY! Requesting identification and access to Landing Platform No. 3!"
There was a silence of about ten seconds on the other end of the walkie-talkie, followed by a voice that was equally serious but filled with disbelief: "Company Commander Li?! You...you're still alive?! Report your current situation and location! And...how...did you get back?"
Clearly, the base had long believed that Li Guofeng's team was in grave danger.
"We have successfully completed our mission and returned safely! Repeat, we have returned safely!" Li Guofeng's voice was filled with excitement. "We...we have returned in a special flying vehicle! We are currently about ten kilometers southeast of the base, at an altitude...over one thousand meters, and we are approaching!"
"Flying vehicles? What flying vehicles? Helicopters? Impossible. The skies are so unsafe now. Even the most advanced helicopters can't withstand those mutated insects and birds. The loud noise they make as soon as they take off will alert them..." The voice on the other end was full of confusion and vigilance.
“It’s not a helicopter!” Li Guofeng quickly explained, knowing it would be hard to believe. “It’s a huge, golden mutated bird! It’s Mr. Bai’s mount… and it’s friendly! Repeat, we are returning on a giant bird! Requesting permission to land on platform three!”
There was an even longer silence on the other end of the walkie-talkie, with only a faint static noise audible.
One can imagine the utterly bewildered expression on the dispatcher's face at that moment.
