After Madam Sheng left, the rest of the Sheng family members who had received the news came to visit.
This includes Old Master Sheng and Sheng Lingtian's two younger brothers.
They didn't blame Sheng Wenjin for being unfilial; they just offered a few words of feigned concern and then left...
At dusk, Sheng Lingtian and Mu Rou'er also arrived.
Judging from his expression, Sheng Lingtian was quite pleased with Sheng Wenjin's awakening.
After all, Sheng Wenjin had been the eldest son of the Sheng family for many years before Mu Rou'er entered the mansion.
Moreover, Sheng Wenjin was a renowned talent in the capital city even in his teens; what father wouldn't love such a legitimate son?
However, Sheng Wenjin's expression remained indifferent, which made Sheng Lingtian feel somewhat embarrassed. Before long, he lost his patience, flung his sleeves, and left...
Mu Rou'er was initially unhappy because of Sheng Wenjin's awakening and Sheng Lingtian's attitude towards Sheng Wenjin.
But when I saw Sheng Lingtian leave with a cold face, I instantly felt relieved.
She swayed her hips as she walked over to Mrs. Chu and sat down at the table opposite her.
"Sister, I heard from my mother-in-law that you're not planning to take back the power to manage the household?"
Madam Chu sat at the table, calmly sipping her tea. Upon hearing this, she raised an eyebrow and glanced at Mu Rou'er.
"I remember telling you last time that our East Garden would become a world unto itself. General, I will no longer compete with you for it."
"I've even given up the generalship, do you think I'd take over this mess that is the Sheng family?"
"But you are still the nominal wife of the Sheng family. If the wife doesn't manage the household affairs, aren't you afraid that outsiders will laugh at you if I, a concubine in the household, are put in charge of the general's mansion's finances?"
Mu Rou'er had always wanted to take over the management of the household affairs, but after she took over the General's Mansion, she realized that the General's Mansion was just an empty shell.
The entire Sheng family, from the old master and madam to Sheng Lingtian's two brothers and nephews and nieces, all depended on Sheng Lingtian's meager salary for living.
Moreover, they are all like chickens that suddenly turned into phoenixes, and the poorer they are, the more vain they become.
Everything they eat, wear, and use is top-notch.
The amount of money Sheng Lingtian brought home each month was simply not enough to support this large family, let alone the many servants in the mansion!
She was determined to return this hot potato to the Chu family today, no matter what.
She's not the legal wife of the Sheng family, so why should she pay out of her own pocket to support so many people?
"I'm not afraid!"
Chu looked at Mu Rou'er and said calmly:
You might not know me very well! I only care about what the people I care about think. As for what other people think, I don't care at all!
Otherwise, you wouldn't have had the opportunity to manage the household affairs for so long!
"After all, if I cared about what others thought, you wouldn't have had the chance to live such a comfortable life in this mansion for so long!"
Chu stood up as she finished speaking.
"Aunt Mu, I'm tired, so I won't keep you any longer!"
"Zhu Cui, see the guests out!"
Chu Shi was too lazy to waste any more words with Mu Rou'er and simply told her to see the guest out.
Seeing that Madam Chu was adamant, Mu Rou'er had no choice but to leave first and then think of a solution!
So he stood up and leaned close to Chu's ear.
"Little sister, I advise you not to be so arrogant, or you'll regret it later!"
After finishing her sentence, Mu Rou'er turned around and left Chu's courtyard with her head held high and her chest puffed out, without waiting for Chu's reply.
Chu looked coldly toward the doorway, her eyes flashing.
Mu Rou'er, we'll have to wait until you survive tonight before we talk about that...
...
Nighttime, West Garden of the General's Mansion.
Sheng Lingtian was sleeping soundly with Mu Rou'er in his arms when a rustling sound reached his ears.
Sheng Lingtian suddenly opened his eyes and turned to look at the door.
Outside the door, all was quiet; there was no sound at all.
He frowned slightly and continued to pretend to be asleep with his eyes closed.
Suddenly, a gust of cold wind blew the tightly closed door open a crack.
Immediately afterwards, the indoor temperature plummeted, and a chill ran through the room.
Mu Rou'er seemed to sense the unusual situation in the room. She frowned and woke up from her sleep.
Why is it so cold?
Mu Rou'er rubbed her eyes and sat up from the bed.
Seeing this, Sheng Lingtian stopped pretending to be asleep and looked warily at the door that was slightly ajar, his eyes showing vigilance.
"General, what's going on? Why is the door open?" Mu Rou'er saw Sheng Lingtian staring at the door and followed his gaze. She noticed that the door she had bolted before going to bed suddenly had a crack, so she asked in confusion.
"Shh!"
Sheng Lingtian raised his index finger, gesturing for Mu Rou'er to be quiet, then pulled her into his arms.
"Ling Tian, what's going on outside?"
Seeing this, Mu Rou'er lowered her voice and asked.
"Did you lock the door properly yesterday?" Sheng Lingtian asked in a low voice.
"Yes! The general knows me. I have a habit of locking the doors and windows when I go to bed at night. I clearly locked the door with a bolt last night. How come it's open now?"
General, didn't you forget to bolt the door after you went out?
Mu Rou'er was still half asleep and had not yet realized the seriousness of the situation.
“I haven’t gone out!” Sheng Lingtian’s expression suddenly turned serious upon hearing this.
"What? The general hasn't gone out?" Mu Rou'er was now fully awake.
She would get excited at night and pester the general to do things. Usually, she didn't like being disturbed by outsiders, so she would always bolt the door before going to bed.
This door could never be blown open by the wind unless it was opened from the inside.
In other words, there are people in this room, or some of them aren't even human...
"Hehehe..."
Just then, a strange laugh suddenly came from outside.
