As Song Ning lay in bed that night, she felt like she had forgotten something, but she couldn't remember it no matter how hard she tried.
I decided to stop thinking about it and just turn over and go to sleep.
The next day, Song Ning woke up early and, hearing no commotion outside, quietly entered the space.
The sight before her left her completely stunned.
The two plots of land that were once barren are now covered with crops and vegetables, and even the saplings she planted have grown quite a bit.
Yesterday there was nothing there, but now it has completely changed and become a small garden.
Song Ning stepped forward and carefully examined the crops. With a gentle touch, the crops, which had been growing well, immediately softened and piled up at her feet. They were already peeled and packed.
I reached out and grabbed a handful of white flour. It was snow-white and delicate, even better than the refined flour sold in the market.
Then I looked at the vegetables next to me; the leaves were still covered in dew and looked very fresh.
I opened those bags and took a look; there were even things like chili peppers and sesame seeds inside.
Song Ning was overjoyed. If they could grow grains and vegetables in the space, they wouldn't have to worry about rising grain prices or starving to death.
Looking back at those trees, I saw that flower buds had already sprouted on them, and they were about to bloom.
The two rabbits on the grass had grown quite a bit, and Song Ning even used tree branches to make a fence to prevent them from running away.
Song Ning glanced at the cupboard and saw that there wasn't much grain left. She added some more to the grain bag, but not filling it completely to avoid giving herself away.
She took out some more vegetables. Anyway, the villagers eat whatever they grow. The vegetables she was growing now weren't available in the village, so Song Dahai and Liu Yuelan probably hadn't seen them before.
In the past, every household had a vegetable garden, where the most common plants were bitter lettuce and wild vegetables.
Song Ning had never seen or even heard of it before; she only knew that it tasted so-so but was easy to grow.
After everything was tidied up, there was finally some noise outside, so Song Ning opened the door and went out.
Liu Yuelan came in from outside and was about to cook when she saw a basket of leafy greens on the stove. She was very curious and asked, "Er Ya, where did all this come from?"
Song Ning glanced at the stove: "I dug it up from the mountain this morning."
"Dug it up? I've never seen this before. Where did you dig it up from?"
"Um...it was just a lucky accident. I don't remember exactly where it was. I just saw that these vegetables looked appealing, so I tried them. They tasted better than the wild vegetables we had before, so I brought them back." Song Ning said earnestly, and Liu Yuelan didn't think much of it. Where else could these grow besides the mountains?
"From now on, let your dad handle these things. It's not safe for you to go alone."
"Okay."
Today's breakfast consisted of vegetable pancakes made from batter and vegetables, egg drop soup, and a small bowl of pickled vegetables.
Liu Yuelan had been keeping the two eggs Aunt Zhao had given her last time, afraid they would spoil, so she simply ate them together.
The pancakes are pan-fried in oil until they are golden and crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. With each bite, you can taste a hint of sweetness.
Song Ning also added vegetables from her space to the egg drop soup. She chopped them up and put them in the soup, which made it taste different.
There was also a small bowl of pickled vegetables, which Liu Yuelan had pickled from leftover wild vegetables. They tasted much better than just cooking them directly.
Each person ate two vegetable pancakes and a large bowl of egg drop soup, their bellies bulging.
Today is the day the village goes up the mountain together. Song Dahai left after finishing his meal, taking his tools with him. He won't be back for lunch, so Liu Yuelan will have to bring him food.
Watching Song Dahai's figure disappear, Song Ning suddenly remembered something and slapped his forehead: "Tsk, how could I forget!"
Yesterday, she went up the mountain and picked some leaves in that valley, intending to show them to Song Dahai, but she completely forgot about them.
All the able-bodied men in the village followed the village chief up the mountain in a grand procession. Song Dahai carried a basket, an axe, and a shovel, and followed the group up the mountain.
As I was walking, a surprised voice came from behind me: "Brother Dahai, your leg is all better?"
Song Dahai slowed his pace and looked back. It was Yang Ergou from the village. He used to be a good-for-nothing in the village, spending his days stealing chickens and dogs and doing nothing productive with those idle young men from other villages.
But this very man eventually got married, changed his bad habits after starting a family, and got along quite well with the people in the village.
"Yes, it's all done," Song Dahai said with a smile.
"How did you get better? Didn't they say it was incurable?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Yang Ergou realized his mistake and quickly tried to smooth things over: "Brother Dahai, that's not what I meant. I was just curious how your leg suddenly got better."
"I don't know either, I just slept through the night and was fine the next day."
"Really?" several people around asked in surprise.
"It must be a miracle from the Bodhisattva, which happened to land on this leg," Song Dahai chuckled.
As they walked uphill, the people around them gradually started chatting. They all found it incredible to hear that Song Dahai's leg had healed.
Song Dahai was a skilled worker in the village, and many people felt sorry for him after he became lame.
Now that his leg is healed, everyone is happy for him.
"Tch, maybe he was faking his limp all along."
Just as they were having a pleasant conversation, they heard a discouraging voice.
Song Erhai and Song Sanhai walked behind the group and heard everything they had just heard.
"To avoid doing any work, they claim to have a limp. Do they think no one can tell?"
Song Sanhai, who was standing next to him, tugged at his second brother's sleeve: "Second brother, we've come up the mountain to find food today, so say less."
