The villagers all rushed to the Song family's old house to watch the commotion. After all, it wasn't something to be proud of. Li Guixiang locked the courtyard gate, went back inside, and dealt with her own affairs.
But the house isn't soundproof, so you can still hear everything that's happening inside clearly.
It started with Song Erhai and Song Sanhai arguing, then Li Guixiang yelled and cursed, and then the child cried.
After this incident, Song Sanhai was determined to divide the family property. The money had already been divided, and now he was just waiting to divide the family belongings and the house.
No matter how strong Li Guixiang was, she couldn't go against her son's wishes. She just kept cursing and swearing, saying that Song Sanhai was unfilial.
Song Sanhai went to invite the village chief, and that very night they were going to divide the family property.
When the village chief arrived, the family sat around the table in silence. Only when the village chief came in did they pour him a bowl of water.
Since it was their own family matter, the village chief didn't say much, only saying, "It's good that they've separated their households. It's better for them to live their own lives than to argue all the time."
After taking inventory of the family's belongings, the next step was to divide them up. Song Dahai and his wife didn't say anything else, only asking for their share, and the two rooms on the east side were given to the third family.
After the village chief registered the division of the family property, the rest is up to Li Guixiang – who will she live with?
Li Guixiang had already taken the money to save her second son, so there was no reason for her to stay with Song Sanhai. She directly stated that she wanted to live with Song Erhai.
Everything was distributed, and the village chief's task was completed.
After they left, Song Sanhai and Chen Shi didn't linger and went straight back to their two rooms.
Before leaving, Chen couldn't help but say, "Second brother, don't complain about us separating the family. Sanhai and I just want to live a good life. If we hadn't separated, our whole family would have had to hang ourselves. Now that we've separated, you can do whatever you want. This time you sold your daughter, next time you'll sell your wife and mother." After saying that, she left without looking back.
Song Erhai couldn't bear it, his eyes widened, and he stood up to start cursing, but Song Sanhai stood in front of his wife: "Second brother, if there's a next time, there won't be that ten taels of silver again."
Song Erhai's family and Li Guixiang looked grim and couldn't utter a word for a long time.
The family has no money left, and the food has been divided into three portions. The two portions they have left are not much, not enough to feed the family for even a few days.
Song Erhai, still furious about the family division earlier, complained, "Sanhai is so insensible! Mother, how could you let him divide the family? And that Chen Shi, since when did it become her place to sit at the table and speak in this family?!"
"You still dare to talk! If it weren't for you, you spendthrift son, how could we have divided the family property?" Li Guixiang said angrily.
Song Erhai curled his lip: "Isn't this family rich? Anyway, all that money will be ours in the future, so what's the difference between spending it now and spending it later?"
Li Guixiang was so angry that she had a headache. The silver in her hand was the result of her life's savings and hard work, and now it was all gone.
Zhang, who had been silent for a long time, finally spoke up: "Forget about money, let's think about how we're going to make a living in the future."
"How else can we live? Things will stay the same as before. We're even short a few mouths to feed now." Song Erhai said dismissively.
Zhang suddenly stood up, slammed her hand on the table with a loud bang, startling Song Dahai and Li Guixiang.
"Do you know that half of the money we paid to ransom you today came from our son!"
The Song family cherished Song Rui the most, and were afraid of implicating him, so they dared not say anything about anything in the family, nor did they dare to go to him.
Now that he suddenly took out five taels of silver, who knows what the employer will think of him?
Song Erhai was also furious: "So what if he paid? I'm his father, it's only natural for him to spend money on me!"
Zhang cried loudly and kept hitting Song Erhai, but Song Erhai pushed her to the ground.
Just then, the door was pushed open from the outside with a bang, and Song Rui stood in the doorway with a grim expression.
Upon seeing her eldest grandson return, Li Guixiang immediately stood up, stepped forward, grabbed Song Rui's hand, and said with a smile, "Rui'er is back? Come in and sit down."
Song Rui withdrew his hand, went into the house, helped Zhang Shi up, and looked coldly at Song Erhai.
“I’ve paid the money I was supposed to pay. You’re my father, so I should pay this money. Thanks to you, I was also kicked out by the boss because of these five taels of silver.”
These words struck everyone like a bolt from the blue.
Song Rui was the most promising child in the Song family. Now that he has lost his job, the whole family has lost all hope.
Zhang cried even louder, and even Li Guixiang slapped her thigh and sat on the ground wailing. Song Erhai was also momentarily speechless.
"If you ever gamble again, don't come looking for me. Even if you do, I'll just let those people slash you a few more times. From now on, you can pretend you don't have a son like me." He said through gritted teeth, then turned to leave.
Li Guixiang scrambled to grab Song Rui's leg, crying, "Rui'er, where are you going? You can't leave... This old woman is counting on you from now on!"
Zhang, disregarding everything else, quickly stopped her son, crying and pleading, "Rui'er, where are you going? You can't leave! If you leave, our family will truly be finished..."
Song Rui showed no mercy. She pushed Zhang away, pulled her leg away, and left without looking back.
He thought that after this incident, his father would at least restrain himself a little, but he was wrong. He was a born spendthrift and a good-for-nothing, and he couldn't change.
Song Erhai was dumbfounded.
In despair, Zhang ignored the onlookers and sat in the courtyard, weeping, "I can't live like this anymore! Why is my life so miserable! Rui'er, don't leave your mother..."
