Song Ning arrived at an inopportune time, just as Xie Linzhou was away, saying he had gone to the military camp outside the city and wouldn't be back until evening.
Without waiting, she simply sent a message from someone in the manor and left with Li Xingwang.
When we set off, it was morning and the sun was shining brightly, but as dusk approached, the weather began to change.
The two were not in a hurry at first, but seeing that it was about to rain, they became a little more anxious, hoping to reach the post station before the rain started.
But as the mule cart sped along, a torrential downpour suddenly began before they reached the post station.
"Er Ya, the rain is too heavy, and we can't see the road ahead. We can't go any further."
Song Ning poked his head out of the carriage and looked around. The surrounding area was no longer visible; he could only see the mountain to their left.
Song Ning pointed to a big tree on the side: "Brother Xingwang, let's drive the car under that tree first, let's take shelter from the rain, and set off when the rain gets a little lighter."
Li Xingwang drove over, and Song Ning quickly ushered him into the car to take shelter from the rain.
Li Xingwang was soaked to the bone. He looked outside and frowned. "Er Ya, I don't think this is good. This kind of rain usually won't stop anytime soon."
Song Ning also looked outside; the big tree had sheltered them from almost half the rain. The rain was even heavier outside the tree, and if it didn't stop, things would indeed be difficult.
This kind of era is so inconvenient; there's not even a weather forecast. She had thought that the weather would clear up today and everything would be fine, but who would have thought that it would suddenly rain so heavily.
I've never seen such heavy rain since I came to Yuanzhou City.
"There's no other way right now, let's wait here for a while. If the rain doesn't let up, we'll think of something else."
Song Ning calculated the time; the two of them had been waiting in the car for about 15 minutes, and the rain outside had not only not lessened, but had become even heavier than before.
Song Ning frowned. The situation was indeed bad. There was a mountain in front of them. If a natural disaster occurred, the two of them would perish here.
"Brother Xingwang, I'm sorry. If I hadn't said I wanted to go back today, we wouldn't be stuck here."
"Er Ya, please don't say that. These are matters of fate, and we can't control them. Don't worry, I will definitely get you out of here today."
After saying that, he climbed out of the carriage, sat on the edge of the carriage which was covered in water, and urged the mules to move forward.
After so much rain, and with all the roads here being dirt tracks, the road was already difficult to walk on, but we still managed to make it a little further, albeit with all the bumps and stumbles.
Such heavy rain stings the skin; a person can't stand it, and even a mule couldn't stand it for long.
After moving forward a short distance, the cart got stuck, and the mule couldn't move either.
Song Ning jumped off the car and ran to the back to help push it, but the wheels were stuck in the mud and she couldn't push it by herself.
Song Ning shouted, "Brother Xingwang, the car can't move!"
Although the cart couldn't move, the mule was still there. Song Ning thought that it would be better for the two of them to ride the mule than to have nothing at all.
Outside, the rain was pouring down, making it difficult for the two to speak. Song Ning gestured, and he and Li Xingwang untied the mule's rope.
As soon as it was untied, the mule seemed to be stimulated by something, and ran off happily, disappearing from sight in no time.
Now that the mule was gone, Song Ning thought to himself, "We're doomed."
The two leaned against the car, and Li Xingwang yelled, "Er Ya, what do we do now?"
"We can't stay here. If the mountain collapses, we're finished."
With rain like this, a landslide could occur at any time, and then there would be no hope of survival.
There's no village or shop in sight here, so even if they were really buried here, it's unlikely anyone would find them anytime soon.
We can't worry about the torrential rain now; escaping is the priority.
Li Xingwang was in better physical condition than her and could hold on for a while, but it wasn't enough. He couldn't walk anymore after a short while and had to lean on a tree, exhausted.
Their clothes were soaked through, and rainwater streamed down their hair, covering their faces and making it impossible for them to open their eyes.
As soon as she looked up, Song Ning seemed to see something. She quickly went to the tree trunk, pulled down a strip of cloth from it, and immediately burst into laughter.
“Brother Xingwang, we’re saved! We’ve been here before; there’s a cave nearby.”
They stopped here to rest when they arrived, and the strips of cloth on the tree were taken from Shunzi.
At the time, Song Ning was taking a walk nearby when he discovered a cave below.
Finally, there was hope. Song Ning led Li Xingwang down the mountain, relying on their memories of the way there. Fortunately, they didn't go the wrong way and soon found the cave.
This is a semi-open cave with protruding rocks on the top, which can keep out the rain. As soon as the two ran in, they collapsed on the ground.
Since fleeing the famine last year, Song Ning hadn't suffered like this in a long time.
Li Xingwang had to walk and support her the whole way, and he was exhausted.
Their clothes were soaked through and they were covered in mud. It took them a while to recover.
Song Ning stood up, wrung out the water from his clothes, and while Li Xingwang was doing so, he found some branches nearby, quietly took out a lighter from his spatial storage, and lit it.
Song Ning called out, "Brother Xingwang, come sit over here and warm yourself by the fire so your clothes will dry faster."
Li Xingwang sat down, not even noticing where the fire came from.
An untimely voice from the space appeared: "Are you stupid? Am I just a decoration? Why don't you come in!"
Song Ning ignored it. What good would it do for her to go in alone? She couldn't just leave Li Xingwang outside all by herself, could she?
