After Song Dahai got up, he fetched water and tidied up the yard. It was still early, so he didn't wake anyone up.
Even after Song Ning got up, Liu Yuelan still didn't make a move.
Song Ning sensed something was wrong, so she ran inside to call for help.
After calling out several times without getting a response, Song Ning touched her forehead and found it burning hot. She hurriedly ran out to ask Song Dahai to fetch a doctor.
There are no doctors in Nanshan Village. If you want to see a doctor, you either have to go to the next village or ask someone from outside to bring one back.
Song Ning quickly dampened a face towel and placed it on Liu Yuelan's forehead, then took some water from her spatial storage and fed it to her.
But after Liu Yuelan drank it for a while, there was no change; she simply didn't wake up.
The mattress beneath her was stuffed with straw. Song Ning brought over the bedding from her room and changed it for Liu Yuelan, then gave Liu Yuelan a quick wipe.
Liu Yuelan woke up once before Song Dahai returned.
As soon as he saw that it was broad daylight outside, he muttered that he was going to town and started to get out of bed.
Song Ning quickly helped her lie back down: "Mom, you're sick and need to rest. We'll go make money again when you're better, okay?"
"No... If we don't go today, how much money will we lose? We have to go... we have to go..."
"Mom, just listen to me. Get some rest first. I'll take care of making money."
Hearing this, Liu Yuelan obediently lay back down.
The village next door with a doctor was not close to Nanshan Village, and it took Song Dahai an hour to bring the doctor back.
The doctor in Shanglin Village was a barefoot doctor who would go to whichever village was doing well. Of the nearby villages, Shanglin Village was doing relatively better now.
In the village, people who are sick usually just tough it out on their own if they have mild illnesses, and those who are seriously ill generally don't need a doctor and just wait to die.
The village rarely needs to hire a doctor, so the doctor is usually idle.
The fact that the eldest branch of the Song family hired a doctor is probably the first time in Nanshan Village in the past ten years.
Liu Yuelan is sick and definitely can't go to town today, Song Ning told Li Daniu and Aunt Zhao.
When Aunt Zhao heard that Liu Yuelan was sick, she came with Song Ning to help.
The doctor took her pulse, got up and left the courtyard: "It should be due to overwork, which caused the fever. As long as the fever goes down, there shouldn't be any major problems. I'll prescribe some antipyretics, and she'll be fine after taking them for a few days."
After saying that, he asked again, "Do you need any medicine?"
These days, getting a prescription isn't cheap, and many families won't get a prescription even if they think it's too expensive after seeing a doctor. Doctors usually ask about this.
Song Ning nodded: "Yes, yes, please prescribe the medicine first."
The doctor came out in a hurry, carrying only a medicine box. Song Dahai followed him again to get the medicine.
Before leaving, Song Ning slipped him fifty coins.
"Don't worry, the doctor said your mother is fine."
Liu Yuelan was a restless and worrisome person. These past two days, with the family business going on, she had been meticulous in every aspect, fearing that something might be done wrong. She was even uneasy about sleeping at night.
Working from dawn till dusk every day, and having previously been poorly nourished and depleted of my health, I'm finding it hard to keep up.
Song Ning felt somewhat guilty; she hadn't considered everything carefully. Every time they made liangpi (cold skin noodles), Liu Yuelan would insist on doing the work, afraid of tiring her out.
Their daily workload is too heavy; they are definitely overloaded.
Song Dahai didn't return with the medicine until almost noon.
At noon, Song Dahai was brewing medicine in the courtyard, while Song Ning was cooking inside. She stir-fried some green vegetables, cooked millet porridge, and made some leftover pancakes from last night.
After the porridge was cooked, I ladled out a bowl and let it cool, waiting to give it to Liu Yuelan later.
During the meal, Song Ning said, "Dad, you don't have anything to do this afternoon, so you should take a rest."
Song Dahai had no objections, but after resting for a while, he sat in the courtyard again, fiddling with something.
While Liu Yuelan was still asleep, Song Ning borrowed a shovel from Li Daniu's house and shoveled a lot of soil from behind the house into the yard.
Song Dahai offered to help, but Song Ning refused, saying, "You can rest. I can handle this myself."
Since she had nothing better to do, Song Ning decided to build a "homemade oven" in the yard.
Watching Song Ning work with mud and build a platform, Song Dahai finally couldn't hold back any longer.
He went out and brought back some clods of earth, stones, and thatch.
"Tell me what you want to do, and I'll help you."
Song Dahai was a man of action; according to Song Ning, he quickly got the platform below set up.
She wanted to make the top part a semi-circle shape, preferably three layers, with doors on each layer.
Following Song Ning's description, Song Dahai stacked the items on top, and soon it took shape.
However, due to height limitations, three stories were not feasible, so only two stories were built, but they were quite large.
Although Song Ning was helping out, she only helped hand over the items.
Song Dahai was efficient and meticulous in his work. Although Song Ning had never seen a clay oven before, judging from its appearance, it must be like this.
With doors made for both the top and bottom layers, this earthen oven is now complete.
The weather is hot now, and with the sun shining, there's no need to specially burn firewood to dry things out.
Song Ning was very satisfied and gave Song Dahai a thumbs up: "Dad, you're awesome!"
Song Dahai was a little embarrassed when he heard the praise from his daughter for the first time.
This earthen oven was very eye-catching in the yard, and passersby would always ask about it. Even Aunt Zhao came over to examine it for a while.
After dinner, Song Ning gave Liu Yuelan her medicine.
Then I observed what I made today for a while. After sun-drying it all afternoon, the soil outside showed signs of drying. In the evening, I stuffed some grass inside and lit it. After sun-drying it for another day tomorrow, it should be ready to use.
