Chapter 4 The Roof is Gone

After dinner, it gradually got dark.

Today's meal was the best the Song family had eaten in recent years.

Although we didn't eat meat often before the disaster, we would at least buy some during festivals to enjoy the taste.

This is the first time I've ever eaten so freely like this.

"Burp~" Song Ning burped and smiled contentedly while rubbing her belly.

Today, the whole family ate so much that, for the first time ever, we were actually digesting our food in the dark in the yard.

When I went to bed, it was only a little before 10 p.m. in modern times.

Song Ning had originally planned to take a shower before going to bed, but today she was covered in sweat and felt very uncomfortable.

However, Nanshan Village has been suffering from drought for several years. Every household used to have a well in their yard, but now they have all dried up.

For daily water use, people have to fetch water from the well at the east end of the village, which is currently the only water source for Nanshan Village.

Those who live nearby are fine; it's convenient to fetch water every day.

However, the Song family lives in a remote area, and it's not easy to go there. Song Dahai also has difficulty walking, and he gets exhausted going back and forth. So now, apart from drinking water, the family tries to save on everything else.

Well, it's only the first day here, so I'll just have to make do. We've suffered from drought for several years, so it's already good that we haven't run out of water yet.

But when it was time to go to sleep, Song Ning was still stunned.

The black bedding on the bed, whose original color was indistinguishable, was it for her?

I touched it and it felt like it hadn't been washed in a long time; it was two degrees thicker than before.

However, this is now the only cotton quilt in the house.

The weather is warm now, so there's no need to cover yourself with a blanket. Song Ning stretched out two fingers, gently pinched the corner of the blanket, lifted it, and tossed it aside.

She finally managed to lie down in bed, and although she tried to ignore the smell of sweat all over her body, the bed was so uncomfortable that her back ached.

Although there was a mattress on the bed, it was quite old, just like the quilt, and it was as hard as the wooden board underneath.

I tossed and turned all night, but finally fell asleep.

Not long after I fell asleep, I suddenly felt a stinging sensation on my face, and my whole body started to feel uncomfortable.

I opened my eyes groggily, and after a long while, I realized that the roof was gone.

The wind picked up outside and grew stronger and stronger. The thatch on the roof couldn't hold up and was blown away.

I groggily got out of bed and heard the door open.

"Er Ya".

Liu Yuelan groped her way to the bedside, hugged Song Ning in her arms, and ripped off the hard, iron-like blankets from the bed.

The thatch on the roof was falling off everywhere, making it impossible to sleep in the bed.

A moment later, Song Dahai also ran in.

Of the three thatched huts, only the one near the stove where Song Ning lives has escaped disaster; the rest have all been destroyed.

The whooshing sound was so loud that the whole thatched hut swayed.

After this ordeal, Song Ning understood that what they needed most now was not anything else, but a place to stay.

It's alright now that it's summer, but what if it were winter? Wouldn't that be deadly?

However, it's really strange these days. In the middle of summer, instead of rain, the wind is blowing, which is not a good omen.

Liu Yuelan hugged her daughter and gently patted her back: "Er Ya, sleep a little longer, it's still early before dawn."

The family huddled together and dozed off for a while, until almost dawn when the wind outside gradually subsided.

Summer days are long and people get up early. Last night's strong winds damaged several houses, so the village became lively as soon as it got light.

As soon as Song Dahai got up, he took a ladder and went to repair the roof.

Liu Yuelan stood on the ladder and helped pass the straw.

Song Ning, holding the ladder from below, called out, "Father, Mother, be careful!"

Song Dahai's legs are not very strong now, and Song Ning is afraid that he will lose his balance and fall. The thatch is soft and limp, and it doesn't look safe.

The family was busy when a girl's voice rang out from outside the courtyard: "Uncle, Grandmother wants you to come over."

Upon hearing this, Song Ning turned around and saw a little girl who looked about the same age as her. She was short and skin and bones, probably due to long-term malnutrition. Song Ning recognized her as her second uncle's daughter, San Ya.

Even though his own roof wasn't finished yet, Song Dahai replied, "Okay, I'll be there in a bit."

Seeing that Song Ning was staring at her, Song Sanya snorted and said irritably, "What are you looking at? Are you thinking of stealing something again?"

Song Erya and Song Sanya were about the same age, and they got along well at first. But later, Song Sanya insisted that Erya had stolen her things and made her pay for them.

But Er Ya insisted that she didn't steal it, and after that, their relationship soured.

In addition, after the Song family split up, Er Ya heard a lot of bad things about her uncle's family, and she didn't give San Ya a good look afterward.

Seeing that Song Ning didn't react, Sanya shouted, "I'm asking you a question! Does hitting your head make you mute?"

"I didn't see anything." After saying that, he turned his head away from her.

Sanya was furious, but she couldn't do anything about Song Ning. She stomped her foot and turned to run east.

Song Dahai climbed down the ladder, returned it to Uncle Li next door, and said, "You guys go back inside first. I'm going to visit your grandmother."

Song Dahai hurriedly went to the old house. As soon as he entered, he saw his mother with a cold face, not even glancing at him.

However, Song Dahai was used to it, so he asked calmly, "Mother, what do you want to see me about?"

Li Guixiang snorted coldly and immediately began to scold: "I called you over a while ago, and it's been so long since you came. What, is this old woman no longer able to order you around?"

"That's right, there was a strong wind all night, and the shacks in the yard were all blown down. Didn't you see it when you came in, brother? Does this mean you don't care about this place anymore now that you've separated from the family?" Before Song Dahai could speak, his second daughter-in-law, Zhang, said sarcastically.
