Chapter 5 Favoritism

Upon hearing this, Song Ning suddenly stood up, ignoring Liu Yuelan inside the house, and ran towards the old house alone.

When Song Ning arrived at the gate of the old house, before she even went inside, she saw a scene that made her eyes widen in horror.

Song Dahai, clutching his head and covered in blood, slumped to the ground, while the rest of the Song family stood by, watching the spectacle with indifference.

Song Ning ran over with a sullen face: "Father, how are you?"

Apart from the head injury, Song Dahai appeared to be completely unharmed.

Song Dahai gently shook his head: "Don't worry, Dad is fine."

"You can't even do such a small thing right, what use are you?" Li Guixiang got angry as soon as she saw Song Dahai's family.

"Hey Er Ya, why don't you hurry up and take your father back? Don't you think it's bad luck?"

Song Ning knew some things about the Song family based on the original owner's memories.

Song Dahai, as the eldest son in the family, was not favored by his parents and had to go out to work to support the family at a young age, while Song Erhai and Song Sanhai idled away their days.

The money I worked so hard to earn, I couldn't keep a single penny for myself; it was all taken by my parents and younger brother.

The parents used the money their eldest son had worked so hard to earn to get wives for their second and third sons, but they didn't care about Song Dahai's life or death.

Later, Song Dahai's father passed away, and all the heavy and tiring work in the family fell on Song Dahai's shoulders.

I work myself to the bone every day, only to come home to find there's not even a drop of hot water.

Song Dahai worked hard to support this large family, but the Song family didn't treat him like a human being.

Later, Song Dahai finally managed to get a wife, but he emptied his pockets and only managed to come up with one tael of silver.

The Song family complained that he spent too much money, saying that if they had known it would be so expensive, they wouldn't have married Song Dahai off, as it was a waste of one or two taels of silver.

However, when the Song brothers got married, each of them spent three taels of silver.

Song Dahai started to have his own family and knew how to save money for himself. He left some of the things he brought back for Liu Yuelan and gave the rest to Li Guixiang.

But Li Guixiang was not satisfied. She complained that she earned money but didn't give it to her mother or her wife, which led to another argument.

Later, seeing that Song Dahai and Liu Yuelan had a good relationship, she began to sow discord between them. She made up stories about Liu Yuelan in front of Song Dahai, saying she was worthless, and even instigated Song Dahai to beat his wife.

Although Song Dahai was honest and simple, he understood some principles. Seeing that Li Guixiang was going too far, he gradually stopped listening to her.

Seeing that her son was gradually drifting away from her, Li Guixiang vented all her resentment on Liu Yuelan, taking advantage of Song Dahai's absence to torment her daughter-in-law in various ways.

Liu Yuelan was not well received at her parents' home. She was weak-willed and no match for her mother-in-law. When Song Dahai was not at home, she did all the dirty and tiring work.

Ultimately, the stress caused him to miscarry his first child.

This incident also became the catalyst for Song Dahai's family to split up.

For the first time in his life, Song Dahai defied his mother. No matter who tried to persuade him, it was no use; he was determined to separate from the family.

In order to smoothly divide the family property, she gave the house she had worked so hard to build to her younger brothers, and left all the family's belongings to her mother and brothers, refusing to live separately.

Although the Song family regretted losing such a laborer who worked for them every day, Song Erhai and Song Sanhai were overjoyed to hear that Song Dahai didn't want anything.

After the family separated, life was still poor, but at least they had their own place to live.

She had just thought life would get a little better, but the old house was haunting her. Whenever Song Dahai got something good, Li Guixiang would find out and immediately come to ask for it. If she didn't get it, she would lie on the ground and throw a tantrum, saying that her eldest son and daughter-in-law were unfilial and were abusing their old mother.

Song Dahai still cared about his reputation, so as long as it wasn't excessive, he let it go.

Later, the years went badly, and the family became increasingly poor. It was a blessing to have enough to eat. Li Guixiang finally visited less often, but Song Dahai was still always there to help with the chores.

"Husband!" Liu Yuelan exclaimed, rushing into the courtyard and throwing herself at Song Dahai's side.

“I’m telling you, Dahai, you’re getting worse and worse. You can’t even build a proper shack now, and you’ve even hurt yourself. What can we expect from you in the future? This shack could have been a room in the yard, but now that you’ve knocked it down, what are we going to do? I don’t need much from you, just one hundred coins, give it to me now!” Li Guixiang said matter-of-factly.

Hearing this, Song Ning laughed in anger.

They've been living in the house built by Song Dahai and using his hard-earned money all these years. This shack was built by Song Dahai himself. Today, Song Dahai was injured while working for them, and now they still have the nerve to ask for money!

Everything in this yard, wasn't it earned by Song Dahai?

Well, now they're asking for an exorbitant amount of money. In that case, don't blame her for being ruthless!

"Mother, keep an eye on Father," Song Ning said calmly.

Liu Yuelan nodded with tears in her eyes: "Sigh."

"Grandmother said she wants our family to pay one hundred coins in compensation?" Song Ning asked coldly.

“This shack has been around for a while. Dahai is my son, and I, this old woman, won’t ask for much. One hundred coins will do.” Li Guixiang acted like the head of the household, her eyes full of calculation.

“Yes, Er Ya, your mother is your own grandmother and your eldest brother’s own mother. She’s not an outsider. Otherwise, it would have been more than a hundred coins,” Zhang, Song Er Hai’s wife, chimed in.

Song Ning sneered: "Really? A shabby shack, something that can be made by piling up a few pieces of wood and laying some thatch, costs a hundred coins? I've never seen a mother like this before!"

Li Guixiang, with a stern face and furrowed brows, sensed that Er Ya was acting strangely today...
