Robbery?
Song Ning immediately screamed, "Thief!"
Li Xingwang, who was closest to her, and the village chief's eldest son suddenly stood up and ran in the direction Song Ning pointed.
Upon hearing his daughter's scream, Song Dahai immediately ran over to help.
The people in the neighborhood who heard the noise got up, and the men all ran up there. In no time, they caught two people.
The two men were brought back by several people, their arms held by their sides.
Everyone had gotten up as soon as they heard the commotion and rushed over in a panic.
The two thieves were subdued and unable to move.
"What do you think they're doing coming in the middle of the night?" someone asked.
The person next to him gave him a speechless look. Was there even a question? He was obviously here to steal grain.
Those two were really suffering. They had just arrived and hadn't even had a chance to do anything before they were discovered and they were beaten up by these people.
Then they started to apologize with tears streaming down their faces, saying that they had no other choice but to come up with this idea, and how difficult it had been for them.
The two men were beaten up again by the men, and then each household was checked to see if anything was missing.
Fortunately, there was no real loss, and they couldn't really do anything to the person. After being scolded by the village chief, they released the person.
Everyone was woken up and, having not slept well all night, began to grumble again.
"Why did you insist on going this way? Did you get robbed tonight?"
"Alright, that's enough. Nothing's been stolen anyway."
The matter here had just ended, and the children who had been woken up were still not back to sleep when shouts came from all directions.
Now, people were even more afraid to sleep, thinking they were surrounded.
The sound was coming from over this small hill; something must have happened on the main road.
Song Ning climbed up the mound and took out his binoculars to look in that direction.
Torches were lit over there, but it was still too dark to see clearly; all that could be seen was that things seemed to be in chaos.
"What's going on? Are people trying to steal our grain again?" the village chief asked anxiously.
Song Ning said slowly, "It seems so. Judging from the looks of it, something must have happened over there."
Many people became nervous: "Won't they find us?"
Song Ning climbed down from the small hill: "Don't worry, we're still a bit far from there, they shouldn't be able to find us."
For safety reasons, they didn't dare light torches at night, but instead lit a small fire next to the car to provide some light.
"Everyone be alert. Keep an eye on your belongings in the middle of the night. If there's any noise, bang on the pots and pans!" Song Ning shouted.
Now, those who complained about taking the shortcut were completely silent.
Although there are quite a few of them, there are even more refugees on the main road, including children and the elderly, so they may not be able to outnumber them.
Two thieves versus a large group of thieves—they can still distinguish between what's important and what's not.
Now, people believed Song Ning's words a little more.
"Thanks to Er Ya's reminder, otherwise we would have been the ones suffering tonight." The village chief breathed a sigh of relief.
"Let's be careful in the middle of the night, just in case," Song Ning advised.
Both village chiefs nodded, and dared not sleep any longer that night.
Li Xingwang was on night watch in the latter half of the night and came over to sit with Song Ning.
“When I used to go back to the village, I always heard people talk about you, saying you were lazy, good-for-nothing, and brainless.” Now that the two are familiar with each other, Li Xingwang speaks without restraint.
Song Ning smiled and asked, "And now?"
"Now... I think you're the smartest person in our village."
He glanced to the side and whispered, "Smarter than the village chief."
Song Ning grinned and whispered, "You have a good eye."
Song Ning had always thought Li Xingwang was the kind of honest, quiet person who didn't know how to talk, but after getting to know him better recently, she discovered that he was actually quite good at talking.
Originally, Li Xingwang was in a bad mood when he left the town because of Tian Xiaoqin's matter, but he didn't expect that after only a few days, he would be as good as if nothing had happened.
"Haven't you missed Tian Xiaoqin these past couple of days?"
Li Xingwang scratched the back of his head awkwardly.
He used to be blinded by love, thinking that Tian Xiaoqin was the best girl in the world. But these past few days he's come to terms with it; it was his own fault for not judging people well.
However, Tian Xiaoqin also got her comeuppance, and he was able to vent his anger.
"We're lucky to be alive right now, we don't have time to think about anything else."
"Don't worry, once we've settled down, Aunt Zhao will definitely find you a wife, someone even better than Tian Xiaoqin."
Li Xingwang blushed slightly.
As the two were talking, Madam Sun came over.
As soon as she came over, she smiled and said, "Er Ya, the medicine you gave me last time worked. Shi Tou is much better tonight and can sleep more soundly now."
"It works, that's good. There's still half a medicine left, I'll go get it for my sister-in-law now."
Mrs. Sun grabbed her arm and said, "That's not what I meant. I just wanted to thank you."
If it weren't for Er Ya, they would have died long ago.
"It's good that Shi Tou is alright. My sister-in-law has helped our family before, so it's only right that we help each other out now."
Sun was touched. Because Er Ya had helped Liu Yuelan before, she had always remembered it. Whenever there was a good thing, she would always give it to her first, instead of the Song family.
Tears welled up in my eyes instantly.
Song Ning wasn't good at handling such situations and didn't know how to comfort people, so she gave Li Xingwang a wink.
Li Xingwang laughed and said, "Sister-in-law, we're all from the same village, so it's only right that we help each other out. If you ever need anything, just let me know, and I'll come and help."
It's getting late. You've had a long day, go home and get some sleep. We have to travel tomorrow morning.
Sun wiped away her tears and smiled, "Alright, if I ever need anything in the future, I'll come to you. I won't interrupt your conversation." With that, she turned and left.
