Chapter 111 The Remains of the Existent
Human beings have compiled history into a magnificent epic.
Could the pioneers who forged all of this with their blood and souls have predicted that this history would, at some point in the future, become the cornerstone of human existence?
Milo raised her right hand and gently pressed it against the jade seal. Through the mottled, blood-red light curtain, she gazed at a portion of "Sacred Object - Human Epic": Chapter 1, Section 3.
It depicts savages drying animal hides on a sunny slope, their red faces filled with joy.
Perhaps in some alien world, some world line, or some point in time, epics are merely moving poems, and history only needs to be recorded in books for future generations to remember, becoming part of a collective memory.
It is enough for future generations to learn from the records, “Oh, so our predecessors went through this,” “I must learn their spirit,” and “I can’t do this.”
[“It’s a pity we are not that lucky.”] The devil’s magnetic voice sounded in his mind.
We...are you worthy enough to say "we"?
"Of course, because I am you. Didn't you say last time that I'm human?"
Milo ignored it. After all, in this sacred house that held some holy relics, even the devil could not project himself onto other reflective places at will. He could only show his majesty in her eyes and mind.
The small piece of humanity's epic poem housed here spans 222 feet in its visible section, forming a scroll that wraps around the perimeter like a folding screen. Other passages can be found in other rooms.
This is one of the important functions of the [Holy Relic - Human Epic]: to establish a strong connection with the [Remains of Beings] and form an [Existence Barrier].
They are the key evidence to prove the existence of human civilization, maintaining the reasonable existence of human beings, human history and human technology amidst the tide of strange invasions.
If this barrier is removed, perhaps during the next tide, some invisible yet tangible force will sweep in and turn all of humanity into part of this strange force.
All remaining traces of all human creations were wiped out and extracted into pure energy.
The mysterious core of the abyss—the Star Core—is like a tyrant. It defies all claims and demands, and if humanity fails to prove its existence before it, it will be annihilated.
“There’s still too little history that’s been rescued.”
Milo took a few steps back, admiring the scroll before him. No matter how long the scroll was, the amount of painting that could be done on it was still limited.
Not to mention how humans can record all kinds of history on a limited scroll, the era of great destruction and the great collapse alone destroyed too much recorded history.
The existing human epic can only maintain the stable existence of the Church of Light and several institutions under the church, slightly suppress the wellhead of the abyss, and allow them to use the products of the technological age within a certain range, which cannot radiate to further places.
In order to obtain more energy to maintain the existence of the holy relics, the Church of Light has been fighting for hundreds of years, conquering aliens and "same species".
This is truly a critical moment for our survival... In the eyes of other sects, we are nothing more than selfish lunatics.
Milo ended his long gaze, took one last look, and then looked away, stepping back in the opposite direction of the red light curtain.
She would bring students to see part of the relic, introduce them to the importance of the human epic, and strengthen the relic's presence in the hearts of the survivors.
But the human epic, after all, is not indestructible, nor even indestructible. In fact, over the centuries of war, a significant portion of the human epic has been thoroughly damaged and contaminated, never to be reproduced.
Perhaps the star core really has a special malice towards humans, which is why it has cast a shadow of doom on the human epic, a true sacred object that embodies blood and spirit, to show that humans will eventually be destroyed.
Ta-da, ta-da.
The moment the professor completely retreated to the yellow line, the light curtain suddenly turned from red to green. This barrier, symbolizing [safety], would block most attacks, allowing other magical items to absorb the damage instead.
If any force dares to launch an attack at close range, the emergency response measures, including the apostle cluster, will teach them what the last bit of humanity is.
Miroku walked into the long corridor without looking back, and walked from the other end to the venue where the remains of the living beings were stored.
Compared to the epic of humanity, the security around the remains of beings is rudimentary.
This is mainly because the [remains of beings] have extremely special properties and have established a strong connection with humans themselves.
As long as humanity is not destroyed, the remains of beings will not be destroyed, and even the remains of new sacrifices-saviors can continue to be added to add to its strength.
"But conversely, if the remains of an existing being are destroyed due to some factors, then it means that humanity itself..."
Oh, the remains of beings are destroyed prematurely? They will only be destroyed at the same time as humans.
Miroku didn't speak, but the devil could hear the voice deep in her heart.
"Don't be so confident. Our predecessors have always said not to use common sense to infer anomalies. The remains of living beings are also anomalies."
Are all the efforts of mankind, the act of saving the world that involves melting blood, soul and even sacrificing one's own existence, just human self-satisfaction?
It is not worth mentioning to the world itself, and may even be responded to maliciously by the star core.
Milo remained silent, and the devil chuckled seductively in her ear, his laughter elegant and compassionate.
Da, da, da, da.
The professor started walking again, this time straight and steady.
She walked past the remains struggling in the flames, walked past the remains drowning in the darkness, walked past the remains whose skulls were pulled to the limit as if filled with anger, walked past the remains turned into dust, and walked towards - a void shrouded by an invisible curtain.
Milo stood at the boundary between red and black, light and darkness. Countless deafening voices roared in her ears, and even the devil was unable to make a sound.
This period of time when I was tormented by the devil seemed very long, and the days felt like years. I also needed to monitor my affairs and emotions at all times.
The devil is very clever. She knows the darkness in the deepest part of her heart and can capture every regret, every moment of doubt, every loophole in the process of growing up... Then she will find the best time to whisper it in her ear.
Perhaps I-she-it was once a creature from the abyss, choosing to become a human in order to usurp the fire of humanity and to seize everything it desired from within humanity.
"The time has come, Miroku. I have accumulated energy for thousands and tens of thousands of years, and I cannot fall with humans." If it were it, it might say this.
But compared to the education I have received and everything I have experienced as a human being, all this is really - too light.
who I am?
There was no need for her to answer. Countless faces in her memories turned around, calling her name in different fragments with different voices and emotions.
"Milo."
Beep.
A short warning sounded, and the silver-blue door slowly opened.
A black-haired girl walked out from inside and stood still with two clicks.
Her free and unsteady walking posture overlaps with the scene of people picking fruits while singing in the epic of mankind. There is no worry about the future or abnormalities, only innocence and hope.
The girl smiled happily, the light in her eyes flickering, and she looked at her and bent down gently. "Hello, teacher~"
So Miroku also smiled sincerely. "Hello."
…
"Hello."
The professor stood in the middle of the bright museum hall, as if all the light was gathered behind him.
Chen Xiao'er blinked, looked away a little embarrassedly, and went back to look for Ling behind her. Fortunately, Ling was right beside her, and after catching her gaze, he gently took her hand.
The two continued walking along the guide line marked by the museum.
In order to allow the students to see more clearly, Chen Xiao'er took the initiative to walk to the side and stopped at the booth in the corner.
She and Zero stood side by side, looking at the various taxidermy animals under the light.
Some of the specimens were covered in fur and formalin-treated flesh, but more specimens were left with only snow-white skeletons, and it was unclear whether they were real bones or plaster imitations.
The students' movements were very careful and gentle to the extreme.
Even though the surrounding areas were marked off as prohibited areas with red ribbons and yellow lines, they still kept their distance from the specimens and were unable to even touch a corner of their clothes.
There was a piece of black object in the display cabinet behind Professor Miroku.
Chen Xiao'er squinted her eyes and observed carefully. It felt like leftover wood that had been burned into charcoal.
Since coke can be placed in such an important position, it must be a very rare petrified wood, right?
"We still haven't been able to prove its existence."
"We still haven't been able to prove its existence."
Professor Milo raised his wrist slightly, as if resting it on an invisible platform. "A nameless entity—that's all we can say about it. What role has it played in the biosphere, and what is its overall nature? We have no way of knowing."
"The nameless sage, this is all we can say about him. Is he an individual or a group? What contributions have they made? We know nothing. His existence has been completely erased by the strangeness and the long river of time, leaving him a being that exists but no longer exists."
What is the professor introducing?
Chen Xiao'er quietly asked her senior, "Is the knowledge the professor is talking about in the biology atlas?"
"No."
Zero immediately replied, "All research related to it has reached a bottleneck. We can only speculate on its role in the biosphere through similar species. However, researchers generally believe that it has made outstanding contributions to human survival."
"All knowledge related to the nameless sage has been erased. We can only infer from the active history of another great sage that he once lived in the technological age and made outstanding contributions to humanity. He is also likely the one who bestowed the remains of beings—the concept of existence—and sacrificed his entire existence for this purpose."
Eh...it sounds like a very complicated knowledge point that won't be tested.
She didn't understand how impressive it was, so she simply walked along the red carpet to the back to observe other specimens.
While the students were listening to Professor Milo introducing a piece of powdery substance next to the petrified wood, Chen Xiao'er had already walked to a place further to the right.
It is quieter here and you can hear the professor clearly without disturbing other people.
Chen Xiao'er was strolling while listening, and Ling followed her quietly, occasionally blocking her legs that were tilted out of the yellow line, and gently protecting her as she walked in.
Huh~
Chen Xiao'er felt a little tired after walking around. She slowed down among the clusters of skeletons and suddenly saw a small black dot on one of the bones.
The other skeletons were very far away, but this one's big tail snaked all the way in front of her, and she could touch it with her hand.
Is it a mud spot?
She casually raised her hand and wiped away the faint black spot with her fingertips.
…
"Ding!" Rumble...
Professor Milo's eyes changed, and the communicator on her waist suddenly made a loud noise, and at the same time the entire venue was rumbling and shaking!
