Chapter 74: Baseline Test
Block the pervert again and bring peace back to the world.
The following week was uneventful, as Chen Xiao'er and her classmates fell into study hell.
In the morning, she studies; in the afternoon, she studies; in the evening, she studies again...Except for three meals a day and sleeping, she spends almost every moment memorizing and taking notes.
School hasn't officially started yet, so teachers only occasionally offer basic classes. These free cram schools are random and first-come, first-served, so it's really hard to get in.
Since everyone repeatedly emphasized that "physical test is more important than comprehensive test of cultural subjects", in order to avoid performing too poorly in the physical test, Chen Xiao'er would go to the gymnasium with her senior schoolmate every night to focus on practicing diving and shooting.
She still experiences hazy hallucinations when diving, but can swim well with her senior by her side. Her shooting skills have improved much faster, and her accuracy with moving targets is even higher than with fixed ones.
Time passed day by day, and Chen Xiao'er arrived at the test day.
…
The comprehensive test officially began at 8:30 am.
"Please bring appropriate stationery and check the packaging of food and drinks. Refrain from disturbing classmates or whispering during the exam. If you feel unwell, please raise your hand immediately. If you require special medication, please request it in advance..."
The exam instructions were playing on the radio, and Chen Xiao'er stared at the table nervously.
Beep beep.
When the prompt sounded, the three teaching assistants simultaneously pulled out paper cutters, cut open the bag, and took out the papers inside at an extremely fast speed.
Rustle, rustle.
The teaching assistant and the invigilator divided the test papers into 4 sets, two sets from left to right and two sets from right to left.
For a moment, the only sound in the quiet classroom was the rustling of turning pages.
After receiving the four sets of test papers, Chen Xiao'er immediately opened the cover and checked the contents page by page.
As expected, the questions are easy at first and difficult later. The first two pages of Paper A are purely easy points, while the questions in the back are more difficult. There is even a piece of white paper stapled behind some additional questions for you to fill in.
There is nothing much to say about Chinese, which is my basic strength. The Chinese test paper of Taoli University has more questions, but at a glance I can handle it.
I'm doing OK with history, so the questions above look familiar and should be doable. The classical Chinese texts are exactly what I've memorized—good for you!
The math questions on Paper C are... so difficult!
Are you kidding me? I learned this in high school! Why is the placement test so brutal?
Mathematical calculations are already a headache, and there are so many complex word problems. Although the formulas are given next to them and I can use a calculator... Oh, I'll write them last.
Biology, geography and health knowledge are polarized. The multiple-choice questions are extremely easy, while the additional questions and illustration questions are so difficult that you have to scratch your head.
Chen Xiao'er glanced at the photo above and skipped it to avoid affecting her mood for the exam.
The last part was the comprehensive physics and chemistry test. Chen Xiao'er had prepared herself mentally in advance and simply took a deep breath at the test paper.
Akahoshi's physics and chemistry questions are rather strange.
Physics problems don't require calculations, but rather require extensive text analysis and the use of diagrams to express your thinking. The difficulty of the questions is undeniable; Chen Xiao'er was severely criticized by the physics problems at No. 12 Middle School during her high school years.
The answers to chemistry questions change in real time. It would be outrageous if the teacher says "Sorry, there was a new discovery in the lab" tomorrow after you just memorized a formula today.
That is, Chixing University's subject divisions were very rough, and they weren't assigned until the sophomore or junior year, so freshmen took all the basic courses. Otherwise, she couldn't imagine anyone taking physics and chemistry; it would be too easy to break their faith.
Chen Xiao'er turned the pages one by one, her expression not changing at all.
Because she couldn't understand it at all.
Yes, I couldn't even understand what the physics questions were saying. As for chemistry, how many correct answers I got was entirely up to fate.
After finishing all the papers, the confidence accumulated from a week of hard memorization has disappeared.
Passing? No way. I just hope I'm not last.
Please, a classmate who is at the bottom of the class and whom I don’t know yet.
Chen Xiao'er picked up the pen dizzily. Before she started writing, she couldn't help but look around to see her classmates' reactions: The test paper was extremely difficult for me. If her classmates also screamed "ouch", "ah", and "ow", it meant that I was not the only one who found it difficult.
She looked around and found that most of the students had serious expressions, and it was hard to tell whether the questions were easy or difficult. However, there were a few students who were clearly overwhelmed by the questions.
For example, there was a boy in the corner who sat far away from the ceiling light and brought a portable desk lamp with him.
Now he held the test paper in one hand and the handle of the desk lamp in the other, facing the light to his face and breathing hard, feeling that he was almost suffocated by the shock of the test paper.
Hold on, my friend.
Chen Xiao'er clenched her fists in her heart. She silently turned the paper to the first page and started writing from the simplest Chinese language questions.
The nature of the battle has changed.
Rather than "passing", "being excellent" and "getting a decent ranking in the class", she now has to fight for every point and must not get a single-digit score in the placement test and be expelled from school!
Rustle, rustle.
Her pen tip moved rapidly, and she quickly finished all the Chinese language questions and the multiple-choice questions that she could understand at a glance.
Phew~ Only 45 minutes have passed. The remaining morning and two hours in the afternoon must all be used to solve questions other than math, physics and chemistry.
Crash.
There was a sound of a chair shaking behind me.
This wasn't a big deal, after all, eating and drinking were allowed in the Chixing exam room. For example, the girl in the row in front of her was devouring cookies, and the boy in front of her grabbed a handful of colorful pills and poured them down with cola.
But the person behind her was still approaching, she was too close.
The girl whose name I don’t remember was tall to begin with. Now she was leaning forward by holding onto the back seat, and her long hair was almost scratching my face!
My dear sister, your cheating on the exam is too obvious...
Chen Xiao'er clenched the tip of her pen. She wanted to raise her hand to report to the teacher, but she was afraid of angering her classmates. What's more, if it was a misunderstanding, it would become a false accusation.
She didn't want to appear too awkward in front of her classmates, so she had to bite the bullet and continue writing.
Rustle, rustle.
Chen Xiao'er tried to lie down as much as possible and use her body to block the test paper.
The girl at the back didn't move. She didn't sway left and right following the movements of the people in the front row. She just stayed close to Xiao'er's back, casting a shadow on her head.
"Teacher, I want to report!"
Wow——
Chen Xiao'er suddenly raised her head and saw that it was the girl next to that girl who raised her hand to report to the teacher!
Even though she was the one being cheated on, Chen Xiao'er still felt a little panicked, as if she'd been caught cheating. What if the teacher thought we were colluding? Would they think I cheated, too?
The invigilator walked over quickly, and the girl who had raised her hand shouted loudly for everyone to hear: "Liu Ping'an, who's sitting next to me, has a pretty good score, but he copied the answers from Chen, the student in front of him. I think this is outrageous!"
"Liu Ping'an, who's sitting next to me, is a physical fitness type, and he's deliberately using Chen's superpowers to erase the knowledge on the test paper, which has caused a lot of mental pollution. I think this is very unfair!"
Uh, although I am very grateful to you for speaking up for me, but when I heard that Liu Ping'an, who has good grades, copied my answers, I felt that she was a bit...how should I put it, unnecessary?
Chen Xiao'er stared at her own paper, speechless and choking. She wasn't working on Chinese, but on geography analysis. If Liu Ping'an had dared to copy, his test score would have been disastrous.
The invigilator pushed his glasses up and patted Liu Ping'an on the shoulder: "Student, your behavior is indeed unfair to others. So, since you haven't copied anything yet, go to the farthest place to take the exam first."
"Okay~" Liu Ping'an was also quite single. He made a face at the teacher when he stood up, then pushed away the chair and staggered out.
When she passed by Chen Xiao'er, she chuckled and touched her brow with her finger.
You really are... okay~
Chen Xiao'er was no longer angry and could only shake her head and continue writing.
As she was writing, she noticed that the teacher actually patted the shoulders of several students next to her and asked them to leave their seats and sit farther away.
Soon, she was the only one left around her.
...What's going on? Did the teacher think that my grades were so good that everyone would copy the answers on the test?
This idea was so outrageous that Chen Xiao'er laughed as soon as she thought of it, shook her head and continued writing.
There are advantages to having fewer people, at least the sound of people chewing food has become quieter.
Chen Xiao'er quickly turned the page, and when she came to the biology question, someone raised their hand to report.
"Teacher! I want to sit next to Chen Xiao'er!"
A thin girl stood up and coughed as she spoke. "Ahem, I'm willing to deduct 20 points from my grade as long as I can sit there. I'm easily influenced, and classmate Chen's place is quieter."
"My superpower is quite unique, and my physical condition is so weak that even if I continue to take the rejection medication, I still experience a severe reaction. My entire body aches after taking the medication. Please let me sit next to classmate Chen. You can deduct 20 points from me."
"Um……"
The monitoring teacher thought anxiously for a moment, then looked at the students around him and said, "So, is there anyone else in a similar situation? This student has a point. If you're feeling uncomfortable, don't bear it. Those who are willing to have 20 points deducted, please come sit over here. Don't try to take advantage of this situation."
“Thank you, teacher!”
The thin girl immediately picked up the test paper and walked over. There were actually two students in the corner who packed up and stood up to walk over here.
Chen Xiao'er was so shocked that she almost dropped her pen. "Are you serious? The teacher was obviously being sarcastic when he just said that!"
So do these students really hate being disturbed, or do they like the teacher's joke and are willing to deduct 20 points to deepen the irony of the joke?
Regardless of what she thought, the three students actually came over with their stationery and test papers. The first girl who raised her hand sat directly behind her, right where Liu Ping'an had been.
Chen Xiao'er gave the invigilator a look full of doubt.
The teacher shrugged and joked again: "Why don't you thank Chen?"
"Thank you, Chen."
"Thanks."
"Thank you."
The three students thanked him in a serious manner, then lay down and answered the questions quickly.
Perhaps to show that this was useful, they wrote the questions very quickly, much faster than the people far away, and they stopped eating and swallowing pills, and paid some attention to their behavior.
Huh~
Chen Xiao'er was stunned for more than ten seconds and pinched her forehead with her hand.
No matter what others are saying, you have to get your grades yourself.
She calmed down and focused her attention, then turned to the next page and continued writing.
Ding ding ding.
At 4:30 pm, Chen Xiao'er successfully submitted the paper.
She let go of the math test paper with twelve blank questions and collapsed on the table like a dead puppy.
