Chapter 35 The Emperor's Gift

The Queen's tone was firm and she would not allow Gu Yinwei to refuse.

Xia Chan handed a bunch of keys and two signs to Gu Yinwei. Gu Yinwei stood up and took them. The queen smiled and raised her voice.

"Gu Gengyi, once you have completed this task, I will definitely treat you well."

Concubine Yi passed by him and gave her a look that told her to wish him good luck.

Concubine Jin took her chess partners back to study the chess game. Before leaving, she warned them, "If you need money, please let me know and I will send it to you. Don't disturb me except when playing chess or borrowing money."

Gu Yinwei thanked Concubine Jin.

Concubine Zhen hurried past Gu Yinwei and said, "I am not as wealthy as Concubine Jin. If you need money, don't come to me. If you need manpower, you can come to me."

Zhen Fei walked away with her waist twisted, and Concubine Xian Guipin and Xiao Yu followed her closely.

Gu Yingxia quietly came to Gu Yinwei and said, "Remember to call me if there's something interesting to watch."

"Take a good rest. There aren't that many good shows for you to watch." Gu Yinwei took her hand and walked down the stairs.

Qi Gengyi followed closely behind, monitoring their every move.

Gu Yinwei said a few words to Gu Yingxia, then turned around and went back to the Pepper Room. Qi Gengyi followed her closely like a shadow.

"Qi Gengyi, would you like to go to the Pepper Room for a cup of tea?"

Qi Gengyi hesitated for a moment, then followed him: "Sorry to bother you."

Gu Yinwei asked Chuchu to make tea for her, and she herself lay in the rocking chair holding the pear flower cat and basking in the sun.

In the backyard, Chu Chuchi was directing several strong maids to hoe the ground. She was planning to reclaim the wasteland in the backyard, planting half of it with fruits and vegetables and the other half with flowers.

Almond was standing under the corridor, cleaning the flowers in the garden with a pair of scissors. Chuchu put a small stool on the ground and sat quietly embroidering.

Qi Gengyi had already finished three cups of tea and went to the bathroom twice, but she was not in a hurry to leave.

Gu Yinwei held the cat and gently turned the pages of a book. The quieter the three of them were, the more unbearable Qi Gengyi felt.

The host did not welcome her, and it was not appropriate for the guest to stay any longer, so she had to get up and say goodbye.

Gu Yinwei asked Chuchu to see her off. Chuchu put down her sewing kit and stood up to see her off.

Not long after Qi Gengyi walked out of the Pepper Room, the emperor walked into the Pepper Room with Xunhe, Fugui and others.

Gu Yinwei heard the announcement and stood up to greet him.

Little Tabby stretched out his paws and lay down in the rocking chair to sleep.

The emperor walked side by side with Gu Yinwei, "I brought you a gift."

Gu Yinwei's face was full of anticipation. "What gift?"

As soon as the emperor raised his hand, Xun He hurriedly took out ten brocade boxes. Gu Yinwei's eyes lit up, but as the brocade boxes were opened one by one, the disappointment in her eyes could not be hidden at all.

"My dear, don't you like these gifts?"

"These rings are worth a lot of money. Your Majesty is very kind."

Xun He explained, "When the Empress received the Emperor's jade ring, she was so happy. But after receiving the gift today, why do you feel so sad?"

Gu Yinwei took off her armor, put rings on all ten fingers, and then raised her hands to show Xunhe.

"Master Steward, do you think this looks good?"

Xun He's face flushed and his neck became thick. He turned around and glared at Fugui, who covered his mouth and laughed secretly.

The emperor waved his hand to let Xunhe and Fugui leave, while he leaned against the soft pillow and talked to Gu Yinwei.

"The Queen probably sent you an errand to make things difficult for you. You must do your job well and not let her find any evidence against you. She loves to exploit any situation."

"I will follow the emperor's instructions."

"I've been a bit busy lately. Once I'm done with this, I'll take you to Jiuhuafeng for a visit."

"Okay, thank you for your kindness, Your Majesty."

"Last time you said you wanted to plant flowers, have you planted them yet?"

Gu Yinwei waved to the emperor, then pushed open a window. Outside the window, there was a group of people working. The emperor leaned on the windowsill, his eyes looking at the ground that had been plowed, lost in memories.

"When I was little, I never saw palace maids hoeing the fields, nor did I see farmers planting rice. I thought the rice in the fields grew on its own."

"Later, I read a poem, 'When the sun is at its highest, I hoe the field, my sweat dripping down to the soil.' Only then did I realize that rice is grown by humans."

"When I was young, I was a loner and not loved by my father, the emperor, and my mother, the empress. The Pepper Room was my paradise."

"Now that the Pepper Palace is in your hands, I feel relieved."

Gu Yinwei looked into the emperor's eyes. His eyes were pure and clear, like the eyes of a newborn elk.

For someone with such eyes, being a leisurely prince would be fine, but being an emperor would bring him too much suffering.

Gu Yinwei stood with him, and the two of them admired the flowers and drank tea together. There were no vows of love or big banquets, but they just chatted about everything like an ordinary couple.

Since entering the palace, Gu Yinwei has heard many secrets. When Zhenfei was drunk, she once said that the emperor was not liked by the empress dowager.

Concubine Jin also said that the emperor was not on good terms with Prince Xiaoyao and others, so she guessed that her childhood was probably lonely.

The two men sat opposite each other and drank. The emperor took a short rest before going back to the imperial study to handle official business.

Gu Yinwei sent him out of the palace. As soon as the emperor left, the imperial teacher came. He was the second person who came uninvited today. The first was Qi Gengyi, and the second was the imperial teacher.

Gu Yinwei walked quickly, without stopping for a moment.

The Imperial Master followed her and said, "This Imperial Master and Wei Gengyi are old acquaintances. It's not too much to ask for a cup of Lu'an Guapian."

Gu Yinwei took the teapot from Chuchu, raised her hand and brewed a cup for herself, and then poured another cup for the national teacher.

They both took a sip of tea and said in unison, "You won't live long."

Gu Yinwei put down the teacup, and the Imperial Master pointed at Gu Yinwei's wrist.

"Dark air is wrapped around his wrist, and his life is hanging by a thread." The national teacher made a heartbroken expression.

Gu Yinwei was not panicked. She pointed at his forehead and said, "National Master, dark clouds are gathering above your head. There will be a bloody disaster."
