Chapter 27 The Nanny's Niece's Counterattack
It felt like a bucket of cold water had been poured on someone's face, chilling them to the bone.
Why did she set it to disable private messaging?
Lin Wei didn't know either; maybe she bumped into her somewhere. Otherwise, how could she not find anyone after answering so many questions? It's because she doesn't specifically look at the answers under the posts, and she somehow turned off private chat, which is why she couldn't find her.
Dou Xiuyun stared at the private chat page for a long time, the more she couldn't find anyone, the more itchy she became.
Because of this, she deliberately had her graduate students stake out people whenever they had free time, which caused a lot of complaints. People didn't dare to say anything to their supervisor behind her back, but they didn't hold back at all when they were criticizing Lin Wei.
"What F God? It's all so mysterious and strange. Those people have no knowledge at all."
"Professor Dou is really confused. How could a super genius appear on a learning and exchange website? And a high school freshman at that." Are they supposed to admit that a graduate student is inferior to a high school student?
On the surface, they told Dou Xiuyun that they had done their best, but privately they only checked on her occasionally before leaving. Only a fool would keep staring at her; they would be better off working on their papers and experiments.
Lin Wei was unaware of all this, and she didn't realize she had missed a great opportunity. In fact, even if Professor Dou had found her, with her current abilities, she wouldn't have been able to get that spot, so it wasn't really a pity.
With only two weeks left until the competition, her time is running out.
This brings us to the Olympic competitions of previous years. The process involves preliminary rounds at the prefecture and city levels, from which nearly one-third of the participants are selected to compete in the provincial league. From these participants, about 40 are selected to join the provincial team. Through the national finals (winter camp), 60 people are selected to join the national training team, until 6 people are selected to form the national team to represent the country in the competition.
However, this year is different from previous years. The preliminary assessment has been eliminated, and participants can directly participate in the league. This means that out of 5,000 people in the province participating in the league, she must be ranked in the top 40 to enter the provincial team and participate in the national finals, namely the winter camp.
This is quite a challenge.
Thinking about this, Lin Wei began to doubt whether her choice was right or wrong. It would be a lie to say she wasn't afraid. If she failed to achieve the best in any of her three subjects—mathematics, biology, and physics—it would be truly embarrassing and ironic.
Because of this, she studied even harder and more diligently. After all, with a knife hanging over her head, it's hard not to be hardworking.
And just like that, half a month passed in the blink of an eye. The closer it got to the competition, the more nervous she became, because this was crucial to whether she could retain her reputation as a top student. She had put in so much effort, and she didn't want to ruin it at this critical moment.
However, even though she lacked confidence, Lin Wei still took her admission ticket and walked into the examination room on the day of the competition.
Putting everything else aside, compared to those who are so nervous their hands tremble and their faces turn pale, she was in relatively good condition. There was absolutely no indication of her inner tension; if you could place a stethoscope over her heart, you would realize she was so nervous her heart was practically pounding out of her chest.
Lin Wei doesn't need to be number one; she just needs to be in the top forty.
Even last place would be fine. With that in mind, she looked at the physics competition questions and her first reaction was that they were beyond the syllabus.
Even though she knew this competition would eliminate many people, she didn't expect it to be this difficult. If the difficulty of the physics competition in previous years was around 80 points, then this year's difficulty was about 120 points.
This was the first time she had encountered an exam where she had no idea how to approach it from the start, which made her, who was already under a lot of pressure, even more stressed.
"Don't be nervous, don't be nervous. Since 40 people will remain in the final competition, it means that this problem is not unsolvable."
Lin Wei said to herself, and after a few minutes, her breathing gradually became steady.
Her gaze fell upon the test questions, and she quickly began searching for key information. Various principles and formulas flashed through her mind, rolling rapidly like a roller. Perhaps it was luck, but five minutes later, she actually found a breakthrough.
"Yes, these are the formulas." One formula is knowledge learned in the second year of high school, and the other is knowledge learned in the second year of university. She didn't know what the real answer was, but this was the only way she knew how to do it, so Lin Wei started writing as soon as she was told, and quickly began writing on the answer sheet, filling a whole page in no time.
Even so, it still took her nearly half an hour because the amount of calculation was too great. Although the problem type was still manageable after she figured it out, Lin Wei couldn't control the amount of calculation, so it still took her a lot of time.
After finishing the first question, thankfully, the following questions were not as difficult as the first one. They could be solved with basic high school knowledge, and were practically free points.
This continued until the very last question, when Lin Wei's smooth sailing finally came to an end.
She had absolutely no idea how to approach the last question.
Honestly, I have absolutely no ideas.
If I'm not mistaken, the first and last questions are the ones that filter people out. The first question can eliminate 50% of the people, and the last question can reduce that 50% to about 40 people, which is enough to show how terrifying it is.
Lin Wei thought for ten minutes but still couldn't come up with a solution. Watching the clock on the wall tick by, she grew increasingly anxious. If she couldn't solve this last problem, her chances of making the provincial team would be truly gone.
"There must be something I haven't considered. Calm down, calm down."
She sat there for nearly twenty minutes on this last question, with only ten minutes left before the exam ended. If she still couldn't figure it out, the outcome was already decided.
Just when Lin Wei was feeling somewhat desperate, a faint thought suddenly popped into her mind, as if divinely inspired, and she figured out what to do.
It seems like we can start from this angle.
At this point, there were only eight minutes left before the exam ended.
She glanced at the pitifully short time allotted, then wrote incredibly fast, not even caring about the neatness of her handwriting. Sparks practically flew between the pen and paper as she wrote the answers, managing to finish just before the exam ended.
At that point, there was no time to check it again; I could only glance at the admission ticket number and name to confirm that they were written down before handing it in.
After leaving the exam room, Lin Wei breathed a sigh of relief, but she was still a little worried about whether she had made a mistake on the last question. Although she believed in her calculation ability, who could guarantee that she would never make a mistake in writing or calculating numbers?
Even more so, because this competition was so difficult, she already had a strong sense of fear about the upcoming biology competition. If the physics competition was this difficult, she knew that the biology competition would not be easy at all.
Making it into the top forty will be difficult for her. At that moment, Lin Wei thought of Zhang Mo, "I wonder how he did on the exam?"
At this moment, the person she was talking about walked out of the examination room with a slight frown, looking as if he was stumped by some question. However, his frown slowly relaxed and a hint of pleasure appeared on his face.
Because he reviewed the questions he had done again, and there were basically no problems. Unless the teacher deliberately lowered his score, he was guaranteed to make it into the provincial team.
At that moment, he thought of Lin Wei, who was also taking the exam today. Those competition questions should be easy for her, right?
Perhaps it's because she has cultivated such a good public image that everyone has a lot of confidence in her, except for Lin Wei herself, who lacks confidence in herself.
After returning to her dormitory, she wished she could stay in the system space for hundreds of years, even if it meant studying diligently. If she had hundreds of years to use, she wouldn't be so afraid of failure every day like she is now.
But it was clear she didn't have that much time. In just over half a month, she hadn't even finished the second-year high school biology curriculum, let alone the third-year. Given all that, it was hard for her not to feel anxious.
It's fair to say that the physics competition had cast a shadow over her; if she hadn't come up with a solution in the last few minutes, she would have been finished.
Therefore, Lin Wei had no hope when she participated in the biology competition a week later.
With the limited knowledge she's acquired, what good is it? Forget about making it to the finals; she'd be grateful if she could even surpass 50% of the other contestants.
And indeed, in the exam room, Lin Wei was bewildered by the questions. The multiple-choice questions were alright; they were mostly definitions of terms that people liked to nitpick over. She had memorized and reviewed quite a few definitions during this period, and those definitions weren't too difficult. Even if she was unsure about one, she still guessed and chose the most likely option.
However, she really struggled with the longer, more subjective questions, especially the essay questions. If you said she knew the answer, sorry, she'd never seen a single one, let alone answered. But if you said she didn't know, she could actually piece together a connection from what she'd learned. Thinking that writing too much wouldn't deduct points, and writing too little wouldn't add points, Lin Wei filled the entire answer sheet.
It's a bit like a mediocre student who doesn't know how to do a question but still fills the entire answer sheet.
To be honest, this is both the kind of paper that graders love to see and the kind that they hate to see. They like the student's attitude, because no matter what, the attitude is good. What they hate is having to endure so much writing; if it's well-written, it's pleasing to the eye, but if it's bad, it's a disaster.
Although Lin Wei's handwriting was considered beautiful, the examiner still couldn't help but frown when he saw it.
Because she wrote so much, while the original answer didn't have that much content, it's hard not to think it was just random writing.
However biased I may be, as a teacher grading papers, I can still grade them fairly and conscientiously, so I quickly started reading them word by word.
His brows and eyes also underwent a huge change, from initially frowning to gradually relaxing.
"That seems interesting." With each sentence the examiner read, their eyes brightened slightly, and they would occasionally lower their heads in thought, finding that what she said actually made a lot of sense.
Although none of these sentences were related to the standard answer and should not have earned points, he couldn't say she was wrong. In fact, he thought this classmate's answer was better than the standard answer.
At this point, he hesitated, wondering whether he should grade her according to the standard answer or something else.
This competition is a provincial league, and changing the answers is not something that the examiners can decide on their own. It requires several discussions and votes from higher authorities before a final decision is made. To be honest, it's too troublesome.
If the answer to this question changes, other papers that have already been graded may need to be graded again. Is it really necessary to cause such a commotion over a single paper?
