Chapter 37 The Nanny's Niece's Counterattack
But Lin Wei didn't know that, so the misunderstanding just stayed.
The exam paper that Professor Liang set was so difficult that even his graduate students couldn't solve it, and even university teachers who hadn't received specialized competition training couldn't do it either, so you can imagine how difficult it was.
He never imagined they could do it, and he certainly didn't know that after the competition, someone would be using those test questions to calculate and study. Otherwise, he would have at least told them to wait until after the training camp ended.
Unfortunately, Lin Wei was unaware of this and was still immersed in the idea that if Fang Yihuai could do it, there was no reason why she couldn't. She kept working hard on math, even digging out her university-level math and studying it again.
"How can I not figure it out?" She looked at herself, knowing that she had already learned that part of the knowledge, but still couldn't figure out the problem. After a while, she couldn't help but feel frustrated.
What went wrong? Or did she use the wrong method?
Because of this, she couldn't help but change the steps to calculate, but after only a few steps, she knew she was wrong again. Continuing to calculate like this would only lead to a dead end, and there was no point in continuing.
I was immediately stumped.
Because she was also in a bad mood, she put down her pen for the first time and went for a walk, hoping to get some inspiration during that time.
Putting everything else aside, the scenery of this foreign language school is really beautiful. It is surrounded by greenery, and the buildings are very new, exuding an air of luxury.
There was even a horse farm in the distance, and people of some grade were having equestrian lessons. Lin Wei glanced at it, then sat down on the grass to think about the question on her test paper.
She could ask others, but she just didn't want to. She wanted to figure it out herself. How could the answer given by others compare to the sense of accomplishment she felt from thinking for herself?
She thought that sitting here would keep her out of the public eye, but how could she not? Foreign language schools all have their own uniforms. Boys wear suits, maybe with a tie, while girls wear short skirts. Only those who come here for training wear such casual clothes.
Lin Wei was dressed very casually, in a white short-sleeved shirt with letters printed on it and blue jeans. Although it wasn't bad, it wasn't particularly sophisticated either. She just looked a bit like a bookworm, exuding an aura of a top student.
Jiang Qi and Huo Miao saw her from afar.
The two students are senior high school students at a foreign language school. Twenty minutes ago, they were at an impasse over a question. They both felt that they were right and couldn't find anything wrong with the other. They were almost at the point of arguing.
It was during the most tense moment that one of them saw a classmate sitting on the grass who was clearly not from their school, and a glimmer of hope arose in their heart.
A group of people who participated in the national training team came to the school in the past few days. Even though they didn't know much about them, they knew that these people were very capable. So, regardless of what grade Lin Wei was in, Jiang Qi went straight over and asked, "Excuse me, do you know how to do this problem?"
"Could you help me see which of us did the right thing?"
Beside her, Huo Miao tried to pull her away, saying, "Come on, Jiang Qi, how could just anyone know the answer? Let's ask the teacher." However, she still couldn't pull her away.
Jiang Qi looked expectantly at the girl in front of her. Lin Wei took the girl, glanced at her, and said after just one glance, "Wrong."
"The question is wrong." When the question is wrong, it's not surprising that they come up with multiple answers.
They didn't even look at their answers.
However, Huo Miao didn't believe her at all when she heard this. How could someone see the problem just by looking at it? Even someone from the national training team couldn't be that good, right? So, although she didn't say it, she didn't really believe it.
After pulling the person next to her away, Lin Wei could still hear her muttering to another classmate, "Don't tell me you actually believed what that person said? How could anyone see the problem at a glance? Did she even have two seconds to look at it? Two seconds probably wasn't even enough time to finish reading the question, right?"
Lin Wei felt a little helpless. Couldn't they have gone further away before talking about it? Was it because she was too quick-witted and too clever? Thinking of this, she smiled and didn't take it to heart.
Jiang Qi also began to have doubts after what her good friend said. She could believe that Qin Boyuan could do that, but she didn't believe that just any random member of the training team could have such ability. So the two of them decided to ask someone who knew about it.
Mr. Wu was their math teacher, and he had probably been in the profession for many years. He could handle most basic questions, especially since the school had personally recruited him to boost their college entrance exam pass rates. Compared to a complete stranger, the two girls clearly trusted their teacher more.
So when Jiang Qi and Huo Miao found her, Teacher Wu was a little surprised, because they were both top students in the class, so how could they both be stumped by the same question?
Five minutes later, after he finished reading the question, he looked a little conflicted because he found that both of their answers made sense. How could there be two answers to one question?
Because of this, he looked at it for a few more minutes, but still couldn't figure out why.
At this moment, Jiang Qi couldn't help but tell Lin Wei what she had heard, "Teacher, someone said that this question is wrong. Is it possible that this question is really wrong?" Lin Wei's tone was so certain that she still had some doubts about whether what she said was true.
Huo Miao, standing nearby, said angrily, "What you're saying is too ridiculous. I found a question set by a university professor. How could his question be wrong?" That person is her uncle. If he hadn't recently gone abroad for an exchange program, she would have asked him.
Completely unaware that upon hearing this, Ms. Wu's eyes flashed with realization, "That's right, why couldn't the question be wrong?"
He quickly scanned the question and spotted the problem. Looking at Jiang Qi and Huo Miao, he sighed and said, "This question is indeed wrong; it's missing a few prerequisites." So, no matter how he looked at it, their methods were correct.
Upon hearing this, Huo Miao was the least willing to believe it. "Impossible." How could her uncle possibly give an incomplete question?
Those far away abroad can only say, "Why is it impossible?" Didn't she always say she wanted to be a mathematician? She can't even grasp such a simple question, yet she wants to be a mathematician? What a pipe dream.
At that moment, Jiang Qi thought of the girl in the grass who had spotted the question was wrong with just one glance. She found it terrifying that they didn't believe her. A pang of shame flashed through her mind.
Ms. Wu's attention then fell on what she had just said, "You just said you asked a classmate, and she told you that the question was wrong?"
Jiang Qi nodded. "That person was from the training team. She only glanced at her and noticed. We thought she was talking nonsense." As she spoke, her voice lowered.
Teacher Wu said, "Then it's not surprising. The people in the national training team do have that ability. But someone who can spot the problem at a glance must be one of the top geniuses in the training team." As he spoke, he couldn't help but sigh in his heart, wishing he could teach those people.
Who wouldn't want to teach those geniuses?
When Huo Miao and Jiang Qi walked out of the office, there was complete silence.
Thinking about what she had said back then, Huo Miao felt a burning pain in her face. She wanted to go to the grass to apologize to Lin Wei, but by then, Lin Wei had already left.
Meanwhile, what was Lin Wei doing? She already had a little bit of inspiration, but she still needed to do some more calculations.
So in her dorm room, she took out paper and pen and started calculating, regardless of the amount of work involved, focusing only on one thing: as long as it could be done.
It has to be said that even though her thinking has changed, the stubbornness hidden in her bones has not disappeared; it has just been hidden.
Finally, an hour later, looking at the five large pages of answers she had written, she jumped up happily, "I did it!"
"I did it." The composure he displayed in front of others was completely gone. When engrossed in learning, even a genius can become a madman.
However, seeing that the answer was too long, Lin Wei couldn't help but frown. Would the answer really be that many pages long?
Never mind, as long as I got it right. Although she hadn't compared her answers with anyone else, she was confident that her solution was correct.
After finishing one question, she quickly moved on to the next. Two days later, looking at the answers that had filled a dozen or twenty sheets of paper, she walked directly up to Ji Liu and said confidently, "Do me a favor and show this to Professor Liang." It contained not only her brute-force solution but also some simplified versions of the answer.
After all, it took several days to complete this problem, so why is there no one to witness it?
Ji Liu was speechless, stunned by the stack of answer sheets. He had initially resented Lin Wei, but now he was convinced. Who else was still pondering those questions after the competition was over? Didn't he see the other students give up after a while when they realized they couldn't answer them?
To put it bluntly, he hadn't looked at the test paper since it ended. In comparison, he seemed to know where he fell short of her.
Because he also wanted to know how well she had done it, Ji Liu finally agreed, "I will hand it over to Professor Liang." It was just a matter of handing over something; he still had that much time.
Fang Yihuai glanced down at the half-finished test paper in the drawer, gave a bitter smile, and realized he had lost after all.
If he knew that Lin Wei considered him extremely capable, his bitter smile would likely have deepened. He was indeed intelligent, but that didn't mean his abilities could skyrocket; in that respect, he was far inferior to the person not far away.
"That's insane." How can someone improve so quickly? Fang Yihuai had experienced failure twice in his life, and it would be a lie to say he didn't have any other feelings about it. But he always believed that he could do everything he wanted to do.
Instantly, the disappointment vanished, and he became even sharper.
That same evening, Professor Liang, who had obtained Lin Wei's exam paper from Ji Liu, was also shocked by these answers. On the one hand, he admired her persistence, and on the other hand, he was surprised by her rapid progress. He hadn't expected that she would actually solve it.
"Stubborn temper." Although he said she was stubborn, his face and eyes were full of appreciation and smiles.
