Chapter 9 The Nanny's Niece's Counterattack
On Monday, when the physics teacher came in with a pop quiz, everyone in the class had a long face. "More problems to do?" They already have enough homework. Can't they take a break?
Physics teacher: "You're in high school now, which is different from junior high. You can't be so carefree anymore. You'll have a tough three years ahead of you." He glanced at Lin Wei, wondering if it was because the other students were already so outstanding that they suddenly encountered a dark horse and couldn't help but pay attention to her.
Seeing that she didn't complain like the other students, I couldn't help but nod.
I don't know if her grades are good or not, but her attitude is commendable.
Lin Wei couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness when she thought about her miserable weekend. Why should someone with a perfectly good holiday be able to enjoy themselves instead of frantically catching up on three years of schooling?
She was ruthless. When she discovered that she could put a free lock inside, she locked herself in for three years. During those three years, she not only relearned all three years of junior high school physics, but also did all the past exam questions. If she still couldn't handle a small pop quiz, she might as well not live.
So when that thin A4 sheet of paper was handed out, Lin Wei was surprisingly calm. She first wrote her name on the quiz, then glanced at the questions and started writing.
Zhou Xueqing had just finished reading the first question when she heard the rustling sound of pens next to her. It would be a lie to say she didn't know how to do it.
Sure enough, there wasn't a single subject she couldn't handle. So why did she score about the same as her in junior high? Zhou Xueqing still couldn't figure it out.
Upon realizing that three minutes had already passed and the teacher had only given half an hour to complete the task, Zhou Xueqing quickly got to work.
Having a test-taking pro around has its pros and cons. The pros are that she can answer almost any question you ask, but the cons are that she gets nervous every time she sees others solving problems incredibly fast, just like today.
Little did they know, Lin Wei was also forced into it; her situation wasn't much better. Seeing those geniuses made her nervous too. Others were born smart, but she made up for it with hard work.
If you were to present her with a single point of knowledge and have the two of them study it at the same time, she would definitely lose. It's because the system space doesn't have the function of enhancing intelligence. Her intelligence remains at its original level; it's only because she studied more deeply, did more practice problems, and gained more experience that her grades improved.
Therefore, in order to maintain her top grades, she must get ahead of others in her courses and learn those parts of the course content in advance.
To be honest, her genius was actually quite superficial, like a castle in the air, easily shattered.
After Zhou Mo finished the test, the first thing he did was not to check the answers in his hand, but to look at the person not far away. He saw that she had also stopped writing. Then he looked at Gao Fuya, who was still working, but she had obviously reached the last question.
As for Fang Yihuai, it's obvious he's already finished. Even if he hasn't, it can only be said that he's just doing it slowly out of boredom.
He's really looking forward to this result.
He roughly knew that everyone in the class was roughly at the same level, and simple questions wouldn't reveal their true abilities. This time, the physics teacher had set a rather difficult question; each question was at least at the level of a junior high school entrance exam, or even higher. If someone could get a perfect score on this, their ability would be self-evident. He planned to select students based on their scores in this quiz.
At this moment, Zhang Mo did not expect that Lin Wei would not agree.
Eager to see Lin Wei's abilities, the physics teacher started grading papers immediately after class, specifically looking at hers first. Several other teachers gathered around and saw numerous red checkmarks and the physics teacher's increasingly pleased expression. "I told you she was smart, and I was right." A perfect score! A perfect score!
This is her third perfect score since the start of the semester. Even if Fang Yihuai got a perfect score, he wouldn't be this excited.
The teachers of other subjects couldn't help but look forward to seeing how she would do in her own subject exams.
Because she believed in Lin Wei's abilities, Zhou Xueqing asked her for the answers to those questions as soon as get out of class ended. When she saw that her answers were the same as Lin Wei's, she smiled. When she saw that her answers were different, she immediately looked miserable.
"I'm doomed, my grades are definitely ruined again."
But Lin Wei just listened and let it go. At first, she would have encouraged her to be more ambitious. With her grades, as long as she was willing to study hard, she could definitely get into a top university. However, when she learned that her family had already planned for her to study abroad for university, she realized that she was worrying for nothing.
Instead of worrying about her, you should worry about her own health.
Lin Wei wouldn't admit that she was a little jealous. Going abroad? If she had the money, she would also like to travel abroad.
The next day, everyone anticipated that the results would be released, as some noticed that the papers on the office desks had already been graded, creating a mix of anticipation and nervousness.
"I wonder who will come out on top this time."
"Anyway, Fang Yihuai is number one, so he definitely doesn't need to run." They haven't seen him fall behind in any subject yet; the title of top scorer in the high school entrance exam is no joke.
When the physics teacher walked in, the class had already quieted down. He first scanned the room, pausing for a moment on the faces of a few students, before saying under everyone's expectant gaze, "The results of yesterday's quiz are out. To be honest, they're not very good." He said this with feigned seriousness, startling everyone. Even Lin Wei couldn't help but feel nervous, recalling yesterday's quiz and feeling that she hadn't made any mistakes.
Just as she was wondering what was going on, the physics teacher suddenly changed the subject, saying, "However, a few students still performed steadily and got full marks." He read out the names of Zhang Mo, Fang Yihuai, and Lin Wei.
It's not surprising that Fang Yihuai and Zhang Mo got full marks, but the other person was Lin Weishi. Even though she got full marks in the previous two subjects, when I heard that she got full marks in this quiz as well, I was filled with awe.
That's terrifying. I even think she's more formidable than Fang Yihuai and the others. It's not surprising that her grades have always been good, but to go from average to this level of excellence is incredibly difficult.
What are her study secrets? It's not like no one else studies with books in their hands like her, but those who persist usually get the same results. Unlike her, she seems to be blessed with exam success.
Gao Fuya looked at her 94-point test paper and frowned slightly on her cool face. Admittedly, a score of 94 out of 100 was already quite excellent, but for her, it was not enough.
In particular, she had heard that Zhang Mo had invited Fang Yihuai to participate in a physics research competition. She knew about the competition, which required a team of three people. She originally thought that person would be her, but now Gao Fuya was not sure.
She glanced at Lin Wei, a hint of hostility flashing in her eyes. She didn't believe her foundation was stronger than Lin Wei's; perhaps she could ask Zhang Mo to give her another test?
Gao Fuya really wanted to participate in this competition, which was a national competition. If she could win an award, it would greatly help her in applying to schools in the future.
She was originally going to be the team leader and invite Zhang Mo and Fang Yihuai to team up, but they had already teamed up and didn't seem to want to invite her. If they didn't invite her in the end, she would have to find someone from another school to team up with.
After school, Lin Wei was stopped by Zhang Mo. She looked up at him, didn't say anything, but her eyes conveyed the same message: "Is something wrong?"
Zhang Mo: "I'm participating in a physics research competition that requires two people to form a team, and I'm planning to invite you to participate." He said concisely, without wasting any words.
Lin Wei said knowingly, "The other person is Fang Yihuai?" She couldn't think of anyone else besides him. However, she was surprised that he would invite her. Could it be that the last time he reminded her to take the physics quiz was because of this?
Zhang Mo did not deny it, "He has already agreed to participate, and you are the only one left."
Lin Wei didn't ask him why he chose her, because she directly refused, "Find someone else, I'm not interested in this." With that, she walked past him and went straight ahead.
Zhang Mo was taken aback for a moment, then quickly stepped forward to stop her. "Why don't you want to go? That competition is a national one. You'll meet many talented people there. Don't you want to go out and broaden your horizons?"
Upon hearing this, Lin Wei lost even more interest, quickened her pace, and soon walked away.
Zhang Mo stood behind her, watching her figure as if she were being chased by a ghost, and couldn't understand why she would refuse.
Just kidding, did Lin Wei want to refuse? She didn't want to refuse, but she knew her own limitations. She might be able to help with problem-solving, but when it came to scientific research, she was completely hopeless. It would be better to expect her to hold you back than to expect her to help.
As for finding someone, isn't there Gao Fuya in the class? Just ask her.
Lin Wei, the fake academic genius, decided not to participate. She felt guilty.
When Fang Yihuai heard that he had invited Lin Wei but was rejected, he raised an eyebrow and asked, "So what are you going to do next? Continue to invite her, or find someone else?"
Zhang Mo was also a bit conflicted about this. It wasn't that he didn't have other people he could invite; Gao Fuya had even offered to ask her. However, he was a bit of a perfectionist. If Gao Fuya had also scored full marks on the exam, and had the same score as Lin Wei, he certainly wouldn't mind choosing her. But if there were better options, he was a little dissatisfied with having to choose a less desirable one.
"Forget it, let me see if I can persuade her." If not, then I'll choose Gao Fuya. Putting everything else aside, her grades are extremely stable, but they're so stable that she can't improve those last few points.
Because of that physics competition, Lin Wei was constantly cornered by him for the next few days. If it weren't for the fact that boys couldn't come up to the girls' dormitory, she would have suspected that he would have chased her all the way to the dormitory.
"No, why do you insist on having me? Just because I got 100 on a physics quiz?"
Zhang Mo: "That quiz was even harder than the high school entrance exam. Getting a perfect score of 100 is enough to prove your ability." Is that just because? Doesn't she know the value of that 100 points?
However, Lin Wei still refused, "No matter how many times you say it, I won't agree." If she had the ability, she would naturally go; but she doesn't, does she?
Zhang Mo couldn't help but reiterate the importance of the competition, saying, "It's really worth participating in. If you win, you can get a prize of five thousand yuan." He added the last sentence because he had nothing else to say.
Lin Wei had initially assumed Lin Wei would still reject her without hesitation, but then she suddenly turned back with interest, asking, "What did you just say? There's a 5,000 yuan prize if you win?"
Yeah, how could she not have thought of that? It's an important competition, there must be prize money.
So, can she earn money through competitions?
While Lin Wei was thinking, Zhang Mo asked hesitantly, "Are you short of money?" Otherwise, why would his eyes light up instantly at the mention of money? Even if he was usually quiet and reserved, it was obvious.
Wasn't her family supposed to be quite wealthy? Everyone in the class was talking behind her back, and a few days before school started, someone even saw her arrive at school in a luxury car.
Lin Wei: "I'm short, I'm really short." She only has a little over four thousand yuan, and every day she spends it is one less day she has. If she really runs out, she'll be too embarrassed to ask her aunt and family for more, because she knows that her family's situation isn't very good, and they all earn their money through hard work. If she could earn some money herself, that would be the best thing.
As for the car she took on the first day of school, wasn't her aunt a nanny working for a wealthy family? It was impossible for her to take the bus or a taxi to buy groceries, right? So a driver was there to take her, and she just hitched a ride.
Lin Wei wasn't unaware that they were talking behind her back about her family being wealthy, but since they hadn't brought it up in front of her, was she supposed to go and tell them that her family wasn't rich and was just an ordinary rural family?
The fact that she works so hard to cultivate an image of being a top student shows that she's a vain person. How could she possibly admit to others that she's poor? Of course, she wouldn't lie if they asked her directly.
Didn't they just not ask?
Zhang Mo explained, "If you win first place, there's a prize of five thousand; second place, three thousand; and third place, two thousand. If you agree to join, I can give you my share of the prize money." Since the competition involves traveling to other provinces and cities, there will be travel and hotel expenses. As for not winning, he never considered it; even last place would be enough to reimburse her travel expenses.
Lin Wei thought for a moment. With him and Fang Yihuai together, they should be able to compete for first or second place, right? At this moment, she hadn't thought about the travel expenses. Thinking that she could get at least two thousand, her desire for money outweighed the fact that her academic pretense had been stripped away. She readily agreed, "Okay, I agree."
Neither of them seem like big mouths, so they wouldn't go around spreading the fact that she wasn't a top student. So, by that logic, she is still a top student.
Zhang Mo hadn't expected her to agree so easily. He hadn't even recovered from the shock. He'd been pestering her for so many days, and it was all resolved just because of money? For some reason, Zhang Mo felt uneasy. It seemed he'd used the wrong approach.
"Okay, we'll use our evening study time to complete the research. I'll talk to the teacher about this and see if we can apply for a classroom. You just need to participate on time."
Lin Wei nodded. "Okay."
When Fang Yihuai found out she had agreed, he turned around and asked Zhang Mo how he had convinced her. A strange look flashed across Zhang Mo's face. "She agreed as soon as she heard there was money to be made." He also wondered what his efforts over the past few days had actually amounted to. She wouldn't listen to any of his merits; she only cared about the money.
Fang Yihuai: "It's true." To his surprise, she was like this. He chuckled, not expecting her to be this kind of person. A flicker of doubt crossed his mind regarding the rumors; he didn't know who had spread them, as there was no basis for them. But loving money was fine; anything that could be solved with money wasn't a problem.
Hearing that Zhang Mo had even shared his share of the money with her, Fang Yihuai raised an eyebrow and said, "You seem quite confident that we'll win the award."
Zhang Mo: "I'm not confident in you guys, I'm confident in myself." He participated in the competition to win an award. If he wasn't aiming for an award, why would he participate?
Of course, he also wanted to see the abilities of others. Zhang Mo was very interested in physics, and if nothing unexpected happened, he would continue to study in this field.
Just two days later, Gao Fuya learned that he had already invited Lin Wei to participate. She clenched her fist. Why couldn't she be more resolute? She originally thought that spot would be hers, but it turned out to be another disappointment.
Because of this, she found Lin Wei and asked, "How can you withdraw from this competition?" Before the list was submitted, she wanted Lin Wei to withdraw voluntarily. She couldn't persuade Fang Yihuai to withdraw, but she... she might be able to persuade her to withdraw.
Before Lin Wei could refuse, Gao Fuya made a condition: "I'll give you two thousand if you withdraw from this competition."
Lin Wei shook her head and refused.
Gao Fuya raised the price again, "Three thousand."
Lin Wei shook her head again, and finally offered five thousand, which was all her pocket money. However, Lin Wei still shook her head. Gao Fuya was so angry when she saw this that she left. She thought Lin Wei was doing it on purpose, and a hint of anger flashed across her usually cold face.
Lin Wei watched her storm off, feeling a pang of regret. Five thousand yuan! If she had arrived any earlier, she wouldn't have agreed to Zhang Mo's offer. She was a person of her word; once she made a promise, she wouldn't easily go back on it. So, she could only watch the money slip away.
