Chapter 13
The sound of shoes stepping on the metal plate echoed continuously, as if stepping on the hearts of two people in the darkness.
The fact that the church has no members with investigative talents, nor the relevant technological means, is undoubtedly good news.
But the space here is not large, and this group of people have been searching for several hours. It seems that they will not give up easily, and it is only a matter of time before they are found.
Xiao Shengyun fell into deep thought. They had to find a way to lure this group away, or take advantage of the chaos to fish in troubled waters, so that they might have a chance of survival.
Those around him had obviously thought of this as well. "I'll distract them," he said, as the screen glowed faintly in the darkness, the words on it glaringly bright.
Xiao Shengyun was stunned. In the eyes of others, he was just an ordinary person. Why would an awakened person risk everything to save him?
This is not a worthwhile deal.
Even when the pool was in turmoil, "Shadow" was almost at the door, but turned around and followed him.
Wait, the reservoir! How could he have forgotten about such a time bomb?
"Wait a minute."
Why did those pollutants riot just now? Because a creature containing a large amount of source matter stood in front of them. However, when the pollutants rushed out of the pool, they found that what was in front of them was not a fragrant cake, but an unyielding iron plate. So they had no choice but to attack the innocent passers-by in anger.
What if this iron plate turned back into a cake?
Xiao Shengyun slowly suppressed the part of his own power, and instead separated the pure source essence, which continuously emitted fragrance.
"Shadow" seemed to sense something; he leaned against the wall of the iron can, a bone-chilling cold emanating from behind him.
A church member stood upright by the pool, struggling to keep his eyes open as he slept.
Who would have thought that joining a cult would lead to working night shifts, and that this job would be outside the protection of labor laws?
He keenly sensed that his capricious and seemingly mentally ill boss was looking in their direction, so he quickly straightened his half-slumped back and raised his chin high.
His gaze shifted away, and his back slumped again.
With a "splash," a fish sprang out of the pool and landed right in front of the church member.
The thing that the boss was monitoring so closely was actually a pond of fish? Such an absurd thought flashed through his mind.
This was the last scene the church members saw.
The next second, the fish bit his throat, and blood gushed from his artery, splashing onto the ground and onto the faces of those nearby.
"The pollutants have rioted!"
Before the rest of the church could ask, the serpent had vanished.
Large numbers of fish poured out, and screams echoed throughout the factory.
What happened?
A hundred meters away, a worker faintly heard some sound, but the distance was pitch black, and the house remained shrouded in the hazy night.
"Who knows? Mind your own business, hurry up and finish this so we can go home. I'm so sleepy."
The person next to him squatted down and yawned.
"Shadow" was startled by the loud noise below: "Could it be that the captain has led his men in?"
"Who knows? It seems like no one's down there. Should we go out and take a look?" Xiao Shengyun said.
The scene below could only be described as hell on earth; the floor was covered with a dark liquid, but it wasn't water from the reservoir; it was human blood.
The bodies of more than a dozen church members were scattered around. Some had their faces half-eaten, revealing bare bones. Others had been drained of blood, leaving only skin stuck to their skeletons.
The "venomous snake" was caught off guard and slapped several times by the fish it was raising.
"stop-"
Startled, the fish in the pond surged forward in droves, in great numbers, and frantically lunged at the church members present.
The "venomous snake" grabbed the fish that was about to pounce on its face, and the black substance in its hand quickly corroded the fish completely.
Human flesh and blood could stop these fish from behaving violently, just as a person feels tired after eating. The venomous snake quickly discovered this.
"Bishop, we can't hold on much longer—" Before the person next to him could finish speaking, "Viper" grabbed him and shoved him into the pool.
The fish in the pond swarmed forward, and in an instant, the man's white bones were submerged in the water.
Walk!
Taking advantage of the chaos, the two ran downstairs quickly. There were several staircases leading to the upper floor, and one of them happened to be next to the door.
The only exit is only 100 meters away from the venomous snake.
At such close range, it's impossible to escape the perception of an "Awakened One".
The viper coldly watched his subordinates struggle and wail in the pool, a sneer appearing on his face. The scent of an intruder wafted in the wind; the person he had summoned had come out.
Xiao Shengyun ran quickly, pondering a solution at the same time.
His abilities were similar to those of a viper, but the man in front of him was clearly a seasoned veteran, while he himself was just a novice who had never experienced any storms.
Anyone who has played games knows that while numerical values are important, player skill is even more crucial.
Unfortunately, he's terrible at the game, but he was matched with a high-level player.
A stench of decay wafted from behind him. Xiao Shengyun turned his head and glanced over out of the corner of his eye, his pupils contracting—a black arrow was flying through the air.
He fell to the side, dodging the arrow in a comical manner, and the floorboards that were hit were instantly reduced to a smaller portion.
The venomous snake's eyes were cold. He was about to continue the pursuit when he suddenly sensed something and quickly retreated. The next second, two bullets struck near his feet.
"What are you standing there for? Let's go."
A powerful force pulled Xiao Shengyun up, and a man appeared out of thin air, the gun in his hand reeking of gunpowder.
It was "Shadow," that was how Xiao Shengyun first saw him—an ordinary-looking young man with an unusually pale face due to years of lack of sunlight, the kind of person who would go unnoticed on the street.
The venomous snake was surprised to find that there were still people present, but the next second, black particles appeared in the air and gradually solidified into new arrows.
"Any accomplices? Perfect, you two can keep each other company on the road to the underworld."
"Bang!" The gunshot rang out again, but it was no use.
When the bullets reach the venomous snake, they are quickly corroded by the black particles.
When the shadow is exposed to the light, it is time for his death. As an Awakened who has been engaged in stealth work for many years, "Shadow" has hardly participated in front-line combat, but in this situation, he can only stand up to give his comrades a chance to live.
The two had only known each other for a few days, but they had already shared a life-or-death bond; how could they not be considered comrades?
The black arrows whistled through the air, like the scythe of death.
He could have dodged it, but there were people behind him. Dying as a guardian, isn't that the fate of people like him?
The expected death did not occur.
The next second, the arrow seemed to encounter an invisible barrier, gradually turning back into source matter particles and scattering into the air.
How is that possible?
"Is it over? Isn't it my turn?"
The young man got up from the ground, his head hanging down, half of his hair covering his eyes, making it impossible to see his expression.
This is truly a case of being caught off guard and losing one's life.
But his aura had completely changed.
The next second, blackness condensed, the arrow's direction changed, and it rushed straight towards the venomous snake.
Unstoppable, the venomous snake can corrode all matter, except for the source matter that comes from the same origin, which is also its only weakness.
"Pfft."
An arrow pierced his chest, and the three cardinals—the Viper—died.
"Shadow" stared blankly at all of this, then unexpectedly met the young man's calm eyes.
"The communication from that side has been completely cut off."
The black armored vehicle sped along the road, and there was complete silence inside.
The hearts of all the team members sank. Based on the available information, Viper was meticulous and ruthless, and it was likely that the two people inside were in grave danger.
No one expected that the investigation would encounter polluters of this caliber.
Since "Shadow" belongs to the intelligence department, most of the people present had some contact with him, including Xiao Shengyun. He should have been living an ordinary life and shouldn't have been involved in this kind of operation that was tantamount to death.
But when the people arrived at the scene, they were met with a complete mess.
Xiao Shengyun leaned against the wall, with "Shadow" looking anxious beside him, and "Viper's" corpse not far away.
What's going on?
They were all prepared to help collect their companions' bodies, but it turned out that all the bodies here belonged to the other side.
"Captain, save them quickly!"
Xiao Shengyun kept his eyes closed, and all sorts of noises clearly entered his ears.
Perhaps due to his recent frequent use of his talent, the feeling of emptiness and hunger in his body has become increasingly pronounced.
He needs to consume more pollutants to maintain his human form, and this is a good opportunity. Joining the Operations Department will give him more opportunities to come into contact with pollutants, and he can also successfully disguise himself if anything goes wrong.
After all, Awakened Ones are themselves corrupted humans, only their levels of corruption are within safe thresholds.
Isn't awakening your talent and turning the tables on your opponent in a crisis a perfectly valid excuse?
