The note had three words written on it: I'm sorry.
Oh.
If saying sorry was enough, murderers wouldn't need to be executed.
However, Liang Guiying felt something was off about the old woman returning the items so readily, leaving money and an apology, but she didn't have time to think about it deeply.
She had to kill a chicken, make chicken soup, and cook a meal, which she would then deliver to Zhou Yue and her daughter.
She's already delayed long enough; today is a holiday, she can't delay Aunt Zhong any longer.
Liang Guiying caught three chickens yesterday, and she plans to kill one to make red date chicken soup.
She made preserved fish at the end of last year and brought it all with her this time. Preserved fish can be stir-fried with garlic leaves.
Make another steamed egg custard.
Time is of the essence, and it's probably too late to buy meat at this point. I'll just make these few dishes for today and deliver them to the hospital later so Zhou Yue and her daughter can eat together.
Let's celebrate the new life that the three of them, grandmother and grandson, have gained.
First, cook the rice in the rice cooker, then boil water in the kettle. After Liang Guiying has tidied up the things she brought from the village, the water will be boiling.
The city is great; you can cook and boil water just by plugging in electricity. Unlike their Sizhou Village, where there's no electricity, if you're thirsty in the middle of the night and want some hot water, you have to fumble around in the dark to start a fire.
However, a few years later, with the country's continuous investment and promotion of rural power grid construction, Sizhou Village also got electricity.
The three chickens had been kept in a cardboard box since yesterday and hadn't eaten a single thing. Now they were clucking loudly from hunger. Liang Guiying put on an apron and went to catch the chickens. She cut their throats to bleed them and threw them aside to let them flutter around on their own. She would deal with them after they stopped moving for a while.
The other two chickens need to be raised for two more days before slaughtering.
However, the courtyard was so pretty that the chickens couldn't be allowed to run around freely, otherwise there would be chicken droppings all over the place. So she tied the chickens up in a corner of the courtyard.
Liang Guiying found a small bowl of leftover rice in the kitchen. She grabbed a handful of rice, added water, mixed it with the leftover rice, and then took it to feed the chickens.
At this point, the chicken that had been killed earlier had stopped struggling and lay motionless on the ground.
Liang Guiying found a basin, poured boiling water into it, put the chicken in, and scalded it for two minutes while turning it around before starting to pluck the feathers.
She worked quickly and finished processing the chicken in no time. She then put the chicken feathers in the trash can and washed away the chicken blood that had splattered on the ground with water.
Just as I put the chicken on the stove, Aunt Wang's voice rang out from outside the door: "Grandma Niannian, Grandma Niannian!"
"They're here!"
Wiping her hands on her apron, Liang Guiying jogged over to open the door: "It's Aunt Wang! Please come in!"
"Grandma Niannian, I made some pork rib soup and brought some over for you. I have to pick up my granddaughter from school later, so please take it to Zhou Yue and Niannian for me." Aunt Wang said, handing over a thermos.
"How could I possibly accept this?"
“It’s just a bowl of soup, what’s there to be embarrassed about? Zhou Yue’s mother and I used to be good friends. I didn’t know anything about Zhou Yue’s suffering. I don’t know how I will face Zhou Yue’s mother when I die and go down to the underworld.”
Since Aunt Wang had said so, Liang Guiying readily accepted:
"Thank you so much, Aunt Wang. I just killed a chicken and was about to make chicken soup, but I was worried that it would take too long and Niannian would go hungry. Aunt Wang, your soup is just in time. I'll cook a couple more dishes and then take it to the hospital. Aunt Wang, wait a moment, I'll get you some chicken."
"No need, no need!"
"Yes, yes!"
