Chapter 91 The Clever Girl (1/2)

Zhou Xiaonian knew from a very young age that her surname was not Gu.

She also knew that her surname wasn't originally Zhou.

When she was in elementary school, she was once called a bastard and told she wasn't a member of the Gu family.

To be honest, she wasn't upset at the moment, because it wasn't the first time she had been called a bastard.

But when Gu's two older brothers rushed up to fight for her without saying a word, shouting, "She is a member of the Gu family, she is my sister," her nose suddenly felt a little sore and her eyes became hot.

Especially when her older brothers were beaten until their mouths bled because of her, and she wanted to rush up and beat Ning Xu, but they held her back tightly, her tears suddenly flowed uncontrollably.

She was used to being scolded and had become numb to it, but when someone suddenly protected her like this, she realized how miserable her life had been before.

Of course, this has nothing to do with her mother-in-law or mother.

My mother-in-law is a very capable person.

Zhou Xiaonian has a very good memory. She remembers very clearly that when she was very young, she was often scolded, beaten, and pricked with needles. Her mother wanted to protect her, but her mother was also pricked with needles.

The person who beat her and her mother was a very scary old woman; neither she nor her mother could beat her.

But after her mother-in-law arrived, the old woman disappeared, and she and her mother were never scolded or beaten again.

She and her mother no longer go hungry.

She gets to eat steamed eggs, minced meat, ribs, and chicken every day, and she often gets to eat chicken legs.

There's so much meat on that chicken leg; she was full after just one.

But her mother-in-law was always worried that she was hungry. After she ate a chicken leg, she would give her half a bowl of steamed egg custard.

Even now that she's sixteen, her favorite foods are still big chicken drumsticks and steamed eggs.

My mom also likes to eat them. When I was little, there were always two on the table, one for her and one for my mom.

Zhou Xiaonian once read an essay titled "My Grandmother." The essay described how her grandmother always gave the best food to her children and grandchildren, while she herself always gnawed on bones and ate the leftovers from her family.

Fortunately, her mother-in-law was not like that. Her mother-in-law never ate leftovers, and when she ate alone, she never ate perfunctorily. Even if she cooked a bowl of noodles, she would at least fry two eggs and put some green vegetables on top.

My mother-in-law especially loves chicken wings. If I take her to McDonald's, she'll order two chickens, one for each of us.

She loves chicken and can always finish it. If she can't finish it, she'll pack it up for me and take it home so I can reheat it and eat it later.

Since her mother-in-law came to live with them, Zhou Xiaonian has never gone hungry.

When her mother and Uncle Gu got married and moved into the Gu family mansion, she faced the challenge of how to tactfully refuse the torrential love and care that her older siblings and elders showered upon her.

At nine o'clock in the evening, Zhou Xiaonian had only been studying for less than two hours when her grandmother brought in a plate of fruit. Before she could speak, her grandmother forked a piece of watermelon into her mouth.

Zhou Xiaonian's grandmother, who is also Gu Yunzheng's mother, was referred to as Old Madam Gu after Old Master Gu passed away a few years ago.

The old lady didn't like this title, as it made her seem old, but her seniority and status were there for her to bear, so she had no choice but to accept it.

Who told her to be the matriarch of the Gu family now?

Grandma Gu fed Zhou Xiaonian three pieces of watermelon and two pieces of cantaloupe, saying with concern, "It's already nine o'clock, why are you still doing homework? What's wrong with this school? Isn't the country advocating for reducing the burden on students? Why do you still bring so much homework home every day?"

Zhou Xiaonian swallowed the fruit and quickly said, "Grandma, I skipped a grade and will be taking the college entrance exam next June, so I need to study more."

"Sigh! If I had known you would have so much homework after skipping a grade, I would have been absolutely against you skipping a grade! For a child, what's more important than eating and sleeping? Look at your face, you've lost all the flesh on it."
