Chapter Twelve: Rehabilitation and Nursing Home 3

Chapter Twelve: Rehabilitation and Nursing Home 3

On the way here, Wu Peng had actually advised Yun Xin, "Even if you ask the dean, she might not tell the truth. Why don't we go back and think of a solution?"

Yunxin's reply was, "You can't get anything out of me because you're doing it the wrong way."

Wu Peng was curious at the time about how posture affected the questioning. He tried to imagine it, but found that he couldn't; his imagination was indeed lacking.

Following Yun Xin into the dean's office, Wu Peng finally learned the correct way to ask questions—Yun Xin grabbed the dean's neck with her left hand, shoving him against the wall with his feet dangling in the air.

With that pose, what question can't he ask?!

Wu Peng couldn't help but admire him.

The dean was shoved against the wall and his eyes rolled back as he was being pinched, yet he still had the mind to say to Yun Xin, "You're different from what's written in the files. The files only say that you can sense danger in advance, not that you're so strong and so good at fighting."

Yunxin told her, "Not everyone who gains power will show it off. I only use my abilities at crucial moments, like now."

"How much force is it? 4? 5? Or has it exceeded 6?" the dean asked curiously.

Yun Xin tightened her grip a bit. "I have questions for you, not for you to interrogate me. Know your place."

The dean couldn't breathe because she was being choked. She said with difficulty, "I can't breathe."

Yun Xin loosened her grip slightly and pressed, "Tell me, how did you find us?"

The dean looked at Wu Peng, “Strength 0.9, Agility 0.9, Physical Strength 0.9, Spirit 1.7.”

"Huh?" Wu Peng looked bewildered.

Yun Xin vaguely understood something.

The dean looked at Yun Xin and said with a smile, "I can't see through you. But I have a spirit level of 4.7, and my superpower is reconnaissance. I can see the four-dimensional attributes of all people whose spirit level is lower than mine."

This damn superpower!

Yunxin cursed under her breath.

Last time was the same; she managed to cover it up with a lie. But when Tong Jia awakened her superpowers, she immediately realized something was wrong.

This time was no different. They didn't even figure it out, just because they couldn't see through her, they knew she had a problem.

Will I be able to live like this from now on?

Yunxin felt a sense of despair.

"What are you talking about?" Wu Peng was completely bewildered.

“I said,” the dean changed his tune in an instant, “I know about your affairs.”

"One day, you insisted that the sculpture outside the mall would fall down, blocking passersby and preventing them from passing under it. As a result, the mall staff thought you were causing trouble and deliberately obstructing their business, so they called the police. You were taken away by the police, and the disturbance was quelled. Three hours later, the sculpture really did fall, hitting 7 passersby, killing 5 and injuring 2."

"How did you know?" Wu Peng felt a chill run down his spine, as if he had been skinned alive and was standing naked in the sunlight.

“I’m a police officer, and all sorts of strange and unusual reports eventually end up here,” the director explained. “I then sift through them and meet those people in person. Whether they have special abilities or not, I can tell just by looking at them from a distance.”

"Impossible!" Wu Peng exclaimed in disbelief. "How could the police engage in such unethical practices and restrict citizens' personal freedom?"

“I didn’t do anything wrong. Everything has a reason, but I can’t tell you.” The dean sighed softly. “Life, you still have to get an A.”

"Bullshit!" Wu Peng cursed, too angry to speak. "Why do we have to get an A? Does that mean we can't live? What kind of police are you, discriminating against people? Let me tell you, all people are born equal. Even if you don't have any talent and can't get an A, you still have the right to live in this world!"

This is what you call a complete idiot who can't understand anything.

Yun Xin murmured, "Because only by obtaining an A or higher rating can one learn the truth about the world."

“He’s not comfortable listening to the rest of the conversation, let him leave,” the director told Yunxin. “The staff at the nursing home are all my colleagues, no one will hurt him.”

"No way..." Wu Peng said timidly, feeling that apart from Yun Xin, none of the others were one of his own.

"Go ahead," Yunxin comforted him. "If anything happens to you, I will definitely avenge you."

Wu Peng was initially quite relieved, but the more he thought about it, the more uneasy he felt. By the time he was completely bewildered, the other bodyguards had already rushed over and taken him away.

The door to the dean's office closed again, leaving only the dean and Yun Xin inside.

"Put your hands down, aren't you tired of choking me like that?" the dean tried to ease the tension. "If you want, I can show you my police ID."

Yun Xin released her grip. "Clenching your neck is just a means to get you to tell the truth. If you're willing to talk, I won't choke you."

The dean was finally able to climb down from the wall. She rubbed her neck, which had turned blue from being choked, put her hands in her pockets, and asked Yun Xin, "What do you want to know?"

"Everything." Yun Xin didn't mince words. "How did you know about me? What do you know? What are you trying to achieve by bringing me here?"

"My name is Bai Wei, I'm thirty-three years old, and I'm an ordinary police officer... That was indeed the case before I defused the mall bomb and saved more than twenty people." Dean Bai Wei gestured for Yun Xin to sit down and talk.

"If you survive an accident/incident and directly save ten or more people, you can usually get an A. However, getting an A is not something to brag about; it is the beginning of a nightmare."

"After seeing the panel, I realized the seriousness of the problem and wanted to report it to my superiors."

Here, she specifically emphasized, "I saw the notes, but I believe all difficulties can be resolved. The important thing is to report to your superiors and then inform everyone. Unfortunately, three days after I informed my superiors, they were involved in an accident and died while trying to save people."

"After several attempts, the term 'evolution game' was replaced with 'unspeakable existence,' and the objective reality that 'humanity is facing a huge crisis' was conveyed while trying to avoid mentioning 'evolution game' as much as possible."

"Because we never knew how to inform and warn unsuspecting people without harming them, we began our experiment with government approval."

"Are you trying to tell me that the entire nursing home is a laboratory? The elderly people here have all been informed about the existence of the 'evolution game,' which is why they keep encountering accidents?" Yun Xin was speechless. "Have all the death row inmates died? Are they going to use ordinary citizens for experiments?"

"How do you know it hasn't happened?" Bai Wei retorted. "This is the 15th experiment; the previous ones all failed."

Yunxin lost her voice.

For a moment, she suddenly wanted to ask, what's wrong with this world? It's one thing for bosses to be scarce, but how come death row inmates are also scarce?

Beside her, Bai Wei continued, "Food poisoning, gas leaks and explosions, fires, earthquakes... Once they are told about the existence of the 'Evolution Game,' there will always be inexplicable accidents that take their lives."

"To solve this problem, I have been searching for people with the ability to anticipate danger."

"In fact, there were five people invited in total, but in the end only you and Wu Peng came."

"Research results show that women have a special advantage in the attribute of 'spirit,' which is commonly known as 'women generally have a keen sixth sense.' However, when 'spirit' is low, the sixth sense may react, but the person may not know what the sixth sense wants her to do."

"As your 'spirit' attribute increases, you'll have a vague, urgent feeling to do something. Once you break through to level 3 and officially possess superpowers, you'll understand more clearly what that feeling signifies. You'll also have a better understanding of how to use your abilities."

"The same applies to 'strength,' 'agility,' and 'physique.' By the way, the two bodyguards outside, one with 'strength' over 3 and the other with 'physique' over 3, were both taken down by you."

Yun Xin pretended not to hear, "After all this talk, you still haven't told me why you called me and Wu Peng here."

Bai Wei stated directly, "To foresee danger, to avoid danger, and to save everyone. I want to save them, and I need your strength."

"Can't you just say it directly? Why do you have to trick people into coming here?" Yun Xin couldn't understand.

Speaking of this, Bai Wei sighed, "I tried to explain the situation and extend an invitation before, but they all refused. Because they are all law-abiding ordinary citizens, we cannot take coercive action and can only respect their personal wishes."

"The number of people who die from accidents each year in the past five years is more than ten times that of five years ago, and there has been a trend of increasing year by year recently. However, the progress of the experiment has come to a standstill. I cannot let this continue."

"It was my idea to lure you here using deception, and I am willing to take full responsibility for it."

"If bringing you here can lead to a breakthrough in the experiment, then although I have let you down, I have done right by all mankind."

Yun Xin was speechless. "If you tricked us into coming here and the experiment doesn't make any progress, then you've only let us down and haven't made any contribution to all of humanity."

“We have to give it a try.” Bai Wei’s brows furrowed with unspeakable weariness. “There are many things I can’t tell my superiors or leaders, otherwise it would be considered murder.”

"I can't fully express my meaning with a limited vocabulary. I have to make many decisions, but I don't know how."

"We can only keep trying, learning from our mistakes, and reflecting on them. Then, when we have a new idea, we can try it out."

Yunxin suspected that the other party was trying to gain her sympathy by playing the victim, but unfortunately she had no evidence.

"Do the elderly people know?" she asked.

"I don't know." Bai Wei shook her head.

Yun Xin frowned, then heard the other person continue, "A questionnaire survey was conducted beforehand. If they were to die tomorrow, would they prefer to know they were going to die tomorrow and live through the day in fear, or would they choose to know nothing and die suddenly in an accident? They chose 'know nothing'."

“The elderly people here were all carefully selected, and all of them volunteered. Some were seriously ill and incurable; some had lost the will to live and had attempted suicide several times; some said they had lived enough and since the government needed them, they were willing to risk their lives and volunteered to participate in the experiment.”

"While we may not be able to prevent death, we should respect their wishes as much as possible in other matters."

“They didn’t know about the ‘game of evolution’ either. I arranged a lot of lectures for them, one of which was ‘What if reality was a game?’ They probably thought it was just a hypothesis, just a lecture.”

“Therefore,” Yun Xin keenly realized, “if the information is given unilaterally and the person being informed does not believe in the existence of the ‘Evolution Game,’ they will also be judged as an ‘illegally informed party’?”
