Chapter 85: Moving into the "Mansion"

The soldiers of the large army got on the huge jeeps and walked in front.

Lan Xiaolan, accompanied by two young soldiers, got on an off-road vehicle that could only accommodate three people.

Calling this car an off-road vehicle may be a compliment to this shabby car.

Apart from a windshield with a few scratches on it and two rickety doors, the rest of the car was just a few rusty basket frames.

Some have been rusted and corroded to the point of having several holes; some have been bent and deformed by being pulled; some even have only openings connecting the two ends, and the iron frame in the middle has disappeared.

The entire car was rotten and decayed, with no intact part. Driving on the uneven road, it was shaking and shaky.

If such a broken car were in our country, it would have been scrapped 800 years ago.

The kind that will be taken away if caught by the police if you try to go on the road.

Lan Xiaolan was a girl after all, so for her safety, the two soldiers politely let her sit in the middle seat of the car.

"Hello, Doctor Kao. My name is Li Ping, and his name is Chen Yian. From now on, we will be responsible for connecting your life and work here with our army."

"If you encounter any difficulties in the Living Cemetery, you can come to us."

Li Qing, who was driving the car, said with a smile that seeing a new compatriot coming to the area under his jurisdiction, who was a beautiful and highly educated doctoral student, finally added a bit of color to their boring lives.

"You guys, stop calling me Dr. Lan. It's weird. Call me Xiaolan instead."

Chen Yian, who was sitting on the other side, smiled and said, "Don't say that. We are both younger than you, so how can we call you Xiaolan? It's more appropriate to call you Sister Lan."

"By the way, Sister Lan, we still have a three-hour drive to reach the Living Cemetery. You should take a rest first."

"We've arranged a house for you to stay in on the eastern outskirts of the Living Cemetery. The conditions may be rather simple, but at least it has everything you need."

"By the way, we will leave this car to you when the time comes. If you have any problems, you can drive to the army to find us."

Lan Xiaolan held on tightly to the frame of the car above her head. The road here was too bad and too steep, and she was afraid that she would be thrown out if she was not careful.

"Don't I live with the troops? Why do I need to drive to find you?"

"Your location is indeed within the range of our army's daily patrols, and it's also the closest to the Living Cemetery. This way, you can carry out your research work within a safe range."

"But you only have one bungalow over there, and the conditions are really limited, so I can only provide it for you to live alone."

Lan Xiaolan couldn't help but shiver. This was her first time going abroad, and to such a turbulent country.

She would have to stay here for a long time to work and live, and she would have to face all the difficulties that would arise in the future alone. Just thinking about it made Lan Xiaolan nervous.

After several hours of bumpy ride, we finally arrived at a small bungalow on the east side of the Living Cemetery.

The house is less than 30 square meters in area, appearing cramped and small.

Its walls have peeled off, revealing the bricks and cement inside, and it looks very dilapidated.

The roof is made of a whole piece of iron sheet, which is piled with hay to provide simple insulation.

Looking up, you can see the uneven marks on the iron sheet on the roof, which seems like it may collapse at any time.

The windows were just two large holes that were forcibly chiseled out with tools. There were no anti-theft frames or other obstructions such as glass, and the light that came in seemed dim and hazy.

At first glance at the empty house, you can see a stove made of mud. Next to the stove is an indoor well, and next to the well is a bottomless hole.

According to Li Ping, the bottomless hole is what we understand as the bathroom sewer.

There was no furniture in the empty house, only a place made of a few rotten wooden boards, some rags, and a thick layer of dead grass.

Chen Yian told her that was the only furniture here - the bed.

Lan Xiaolan swallowed, widened her eyes, and showed a shocked yet polite expression.

Before she came, she had some understanding of the environment here and knew that it might be relatively difficult, but the dilapidated scene before her really surprised her.

Seeing that Lan Xiaolan was speechless for a moment, Li Ping smiled and explained: "Don't mind, Sister Lan. Although the house here looks simple, it is already considered a mansion in the Living Cemetery City!"

"Mansion?"

Lan Xiaolan put down her luggage and touched the dusty "bed" which was made up of just a pile of weeds and a wooden board.

Just this? A mansion? Lan Xiaolan was indeed surprised.

"In the Living Cemetery, as long as it has four walls, a roof that doesn't leak, and a well and a stove, it's considered a very, very good house, and the refugees will all rush to live in it."

"If this house had a sewage hole, it would already be a luxury house."

"Because when the house was built, it was very difficult to find the sewage system here. Even if you found it, you had to pay a certain amount of tax to the government every year to use it."

"So, Sister Lan, you can live in this luxurious house now, so you should cherish it."

Lan Xiaolan nodded seriously when she heard Li Ping's words.

Li Ping and Chen Yian left a large bag of food and water for Lan Xiaolan and were preparing to leave and reunite with the main force.
