Investigation #011: The Mother-in-Law's Trap
Xiao Yan's shouts from behind didn't stop Gu Mingxia for even a moment. She went straight upstairs to her room after entering the hotel.
Xiao Yan stood outside the hotel for a long time without moving, staring blankly at the Four Seasons Hotel's entrance. Only after the sunlight became intense did he take out his phone and dial a number.
"Chiba, pick me up at the Four Seasons Hotel entrance on Ronggui Road in the eastern suburbs."
Soon, a limited-edition Mercedes-Benz RV pulled up in front of the Four Seasons Hotel. Chiba, with her long golden hair flowing down her back, stepped out of the vehicle wearing a black tank top and white hot pants. Upon seeing Xiao Yan, she smiled alluringly and opened the car door.
"President, please get in the car."
Xiao Yan didn't say anything, walked directly to the car, and looked back at the Four Seasons Hotel entrance before getting in the car.
Chiba closed the car door, sat in the driver's seat, put on sunglasses, and soon the car left Ronggui Road and headed towards the top-tier villa community in the northern suburbs.
Xiao Yan poured himself a glass of tequila, swirled the glass, and stared blankly at the golden liquid inside. After a long while, he tilted his head back and poured it all into his mouth. Only after swallowing did he speak indifferently.
"I need all of Gu Mingxia's records from the past seven years!"
"Mr. President, Miss Tina is still waiting for you in Los Angeles!"
Chiba replied with a smile and a soft, charming tone. Xiao Yan's eyes turned cold, but he quickly calmed down.
"Remember who your boss is!"
"Okay! I'll put the documents on your desk this afternoon!"
Chiba wisely kept quiet and focused on driving. Xiao Yan lay wearily in his chair, rubbing his aching temples.
In her room at the Four Seasons Hotel, Gu Mingxia lay on the bed wrapped in a bath towel, idly playing with her fingers, her mind filled with thoughts of everything that had happened between her and Xiao Yan in the parking lot of Maria Hospital.
Unable to resist putting her hand to her lips, Gu Mingxia closed her eyes and immediately pictured Xiao Yan with bloodstains on his lips.
What exactly does he want? Is it really as he claims, that he doesn't care that she abandoned him in the past, and that he will still be devoted to her as before?
Suddenly the phone next to her rang, and Gu Mingxia answered it without even looking at it.
"Mingxia, it's your mother. What are you doing?"
Bai Zixuan's mother's voice came from the other end of the phone. Gu Mingxia's eyes flashed with surprise. She grabbed the bed sheet under her and let out a long sigh of relief, forcing herself to calm down as much as possible.
"Mom, is something wrong?"
"What could an old woman like Mom possibly have to do? I just haven't seen you in so long and I miss you!" Bai's mother was from Jiangnan, and her voice was soft and gentle. Gu Mingxia moved the phone away from her ear, took several deep breaths, and then smiled before putting the phone back to her ear.
"You probably don't know this, but Bai Zixuan and I have separated, and I'm living in a hotel now. I won't be coming to see you!"
"You're not a child anymore, don't you understand that bickering between husband and wife is part of the fun? Don't separate all the time. Listen to me, come to Qingfeng Pavilion at six o'clock tonight to have dinner with your mother. That's all, I'm going to call and make a reservation!"
Before Gu Mingxia could speak again, Bai's mother hung up the phone. In the early days of their marriage, Bai's mother, as a mother-in-law, was indeed quite good to her. However, as Bai Zixuan's career flourished and she struggled to conceive, Bai's mother began to be sarcastic and cynical. At one point, it got so bad that only Bai Zixuan was allowed to visit her! Now she was actually telling her she missed her—it was truly…laughable! Gu Mingxia held her phone and smiled indifferently.
I checked the time; it was already 3 PM. I didn't realize I'd slept for so long. Oh well, I'll go to Qingfeng Pavilion and see what she's up to!
Gu Mingxia got up, changed her clothes, and was about to go downstairs when Liu Yan called again.
"Xiaxia, come over here! Let's have some fun together tonight!"
"I'm not as free as you! Bai Zixuan's mom is calling me to dinner tonight!"
Gu Mingxia leaned against the window, squinting at the blinding sunlight outside. This summer was destined to be anything but peaceful!
"Oh dear, this is a trap set by the old lady! You'd better watch out, or you'll get eaten by her!"
"Only I, Gu Mingxia, am willing. I'm always the one setting traps for others. When did it become my turn to be the one setting traps for others?"
